It's supposed to refer to a palette without any paint on it, like it's the start of the journey so the colors haven't been added yet. I always thought that was pretty clear

I don't get why they misspelled it though

Also somehow forgot to add:
>colors = the other towns because they all have color names. Maybe even the badges representing the towns, like bringing them home after beating the E4 is bringing those colors back to the "palette"

25% of the town's population is homeless, how do we fix this?

Incorrect. In Japanese it's Masara (pure white/Brand new/untouched) Town, nothing to do with a palette on which you mix paints or some other head-canon. The English translators just refused to name it "White Town" and instead went for "Pallet" because muh colors are like paints on a canvas bro, fucking everything up.

I was aware of that, thanks. I was explaining the justification for why they called it that in English and that it was very obvious to me even if these anons didn't get it. I think my argument for why the English name works is actually solid and is the reason they selected it in the first place + why it got approved by the Japanese team.

Like these anons' assumption was "Pallet Town makes no sense as a name because that it implies it's a rainbow when in reality it's blank" and my response was "the English name is obviously referring to an unused palette before you add the colors [a reference to the names of the later towns] so the name still makes total sense if you think about it for a second"

Also I think "White Town" wouldn't work in English because the Japanese names are apparently kind of more literary/obscure names for colors. The English translation was apparently going to name the towns after jewels initially because the belief among the Japanese team was that English had poorer vocabulary for expressing colors and wouldn't be able to appropriately match the names/tone of the Japanese town names. Maybe Masara isn't an obscure word, but as you said, it's not going for just "white" but also conveys a sense blank/unused/untouched. IDK if there's a single English word for white that that conveys that except maybe if they used "Blank Town," but Pallet generally gets across the same concept (it doesn't really have a special color of its own until you add paint to it) while still connecting it indirectly to the concept of colors that the towns are named for in both games.

Maybe they also could've used "Ivory," but the leaks show they originally planned to call it "Diamond Town" in English but that got rejected by the Japanese team because diamonds convey luxury and that felt inappropriate for the start of a journey. So "Ivory" probably would've been rejected for similar reasons

Palette is a great symbolic name for "brand new/untouched" in a game with a color naming convention. Sorry for your shit taste.

Genuine question: what's the legal minimum amount of buildings present in a small area that can be classified as a "town"? I don't think three is enough for either Japan or the US, or any other country for that matter.
>>
>>58270276
All the Japanese town names are ultra-specific colors like "dried autumn leaves" or "this one type of beetle's shell" or "this one type of flower". Pallet Town isn't Shiro Town, it's specifically pure/untouched. We have reasonably fitting one-word color names for a lot of those from historical pigments and common flowers (carmine, violet, etc) but white is usually just white.
>>
Vanilla town would work. People think of vanilla as the flavor or as a way to denote plain/simple/basic(which works well to describe the town) but it's also an actual name for a shade of white not unlike cerulean is a shade of blue, etc

lmao

>>58270276
Yeah but palette still misses the mark because it doesn't specify an empty palette, just "palette" which could mean a full painter's palette with colors ready to use to paint your picture (which is what people usually envision) rather than an empty one with no color and is unusable. They would be better off with Canvas Town since at least that is what you imagine being ready to paint on.

>Canvas Town
I like it.
>>
>>58270691
Yeah I thought about Canvas Town too after making the post. I think it'd also work-- it could possibly create confusion too at first since it has a few meanings, but then palette is also confusing at first since they spelled it weirdly (not sure if they thought Pallet looked more like a place name or if they just legitimately messed it up)

I don't understand how anyone can feel anything but joy while in a forest. I fucking loved climbing in trees with my buddies while growing up and I'll still occasionally climb some for fun whenever I go for a walk through the local forest

German uses "Alabastia" which refers to a white mineral called alabaster. Way better than what English tried to do, they could've used "Alabaster Town" as well for once. There's many other things that are white or pale that they could've used. "Pastel Town" would've worked perfectly fine, as well. The word "palette" is too ambiguous since it doesn't inherently imply an unused, blank palette and rather makes people think of the opposite, a color spectrum. It's a very poor choice. Even "Canvas Town" would've been better.
