The colors are especially bad -they aren't as diverse, leading to things blending together or not being able to tell at as quick a glance. Look at the colors of Steel and Flying here compared to the Gen 8/Go symbols...or hell, even Fire/Fighting.

I've seen a few fan made sets over the years to fill in the blanks some of which are pretty good but nobody ever gets the style of the symbols themselves quite right. There's always something off about the thickness of their silhouettes or the level of detail or they just copy the bland modern game symbols. And that's not even getting into the overall art style. Personally the really early 3d graphics from the original cards is my favorite, but I've never even seen that attempted, everyone either goes for the flatter style of the later cards which is fine but not as cool or the super glossy 2010's mac os button style.
