I'm starting to notice a good amount of Gen 7 fans aggressively praising their games/anime while complaining about the past hate it's gotten online lately. Is Alola the next Gen 5?

Even this board was created because the pokemon hype was so big, it needed a containment board. Gen 3 by the time Gen 5 came out was already considered nostalgic by many fans and were even in demand for remakes.

We have the best region, the best cast, and the best story. We also have some cool new Pokemon, cool graphics, and cozy gameplay. SM is the first game in the series to try something new and every game since has been trying to copy its story and characters.
