There were so many faction wars back in the day over Gen I and II being seen as the best by the old guard and newer fans/those more accepting of the newer stuff who'd fight to the death for Gen III or IV to be more commonly accepted. I remember the days where the notion of a Pokemon game managing to outsell Gen II's runner up position was downright unthinkable due to how many people had fallen off the franchise over time. How only an autistic and committed few would band around the anime post-OS and days where Charizard wasn't a meme but was unironically accepted as the Gold-standard Pokemon.
