A thread for the creation and discussion of fan fiction and other fanworks - anything that involves a story and/or reading. What've you been reading? What've you been writing? What would you like to see more of?>Thread question:What's your preferred crossover format, characters inserted into the Pokemon world, Pokemon inserted into another world, or fusion?>Previous thread:>>58258699
>>58284910>crossover formatthere was a snippet from a Worm crossover where Jesse and James went to Brockton Bay and attempted to capture Lung the dragon pokemon. they blasted off againJ+J really could be Tinkers in Worm with all the contraptions they buildIf I ever write a Worm fanfic where MC gets a Pokemon Gamer power, Uber+Leet could cosplay J+J and try to steal MCs pokes
>>58284910Does the OP image have anything to do with how one of the last questions was about horse racing>What's your preferred crossover format, characters inserted into the Pokemon world, Pokemon inserted into another world, or fusion?Depends, but usually a fusion to a degree>characters inserted into the Pokemon worldIn this case it means that the character can adapt to Pokemon's setting just fine. But most of the time unless the crossover IS the point you're better off using an originales des character>Pokemon inserted into another worldPokemon's setting IS very sandboxy and mallaeble. I mean, Mystery Dungeon? Conquest? Yeah, this IS literally Conquest. This path actually works for that reason, but you have to apply fusion to a degree i.e. integrate Pokemon into the world proper.

Can you truly be an underdog if your weak-ass starter has a Mega Evolution in its final stage?
>>58285503What's your in-universe justification for only specific pokemon having mega evolutions, and is your MC the one who discovered the zaza mega evos?
If Mega Evolution is possible without a mega stone, then you should learn how to transform without one and how to keep the transformation on as long as possible so you can make it your base form and properly train it.Like what Goku and Gohan did during the Cell Saga.
>>58285503Yes, just state that your character isn't a dexholder
>>58285503should be fine as long as MC is not a self insert with metaknowledge
>>58285558>then you should learn how to transform without one and how to keep the transformation on as long as possible so you can make it your base form and properly train it.I mean, there was a thing in-story where they were trying to make Megas permanent in the sense that it would be a true evolutionary stage.
>>58285503Why does it matter.
Any takers on "Kitchen Nightmares: Gym Leader Edition" ???
>>58285558just buy an omniring
I think crossovers SUCK.
Pokémon crossovers are just impossible, the world is a giant sandbox, sure, but at the same time its really limited. As everyone knows most readers love ESCALATION while others hate it, some would rather read some OC larping as a character from another franchise flexing harder than NutriMan and others would rather read about Pokémon humans in different settings while others seethe about that.
>>58286387TSMTIf you can't please literally everyone then don't even bother writing. Got a single hate review? Delete your fic. Hell, got a positive review that had some friendly criticism? Delete it, then delete your account, scorched earth that shit until there's no trace left.
>>58286255What gyms would even be a disaster? Outside of the early anime gyms, they are pretty well run. Making up problems to be fixed feels like bashing.Could make up gyms I suppose.
>>58286167I kinda like Pokémon Tectonic's Megas/Gigantamaxes as evolutions for this reason, even if the names could bee funnier. For example, Beedrill turns into M. Beedrill/Warnet at level 42 and Eevee into Giganteon at level 40 with a beefed up Adaptability.
>>58286764Castelia gym's honey walls are digusting and probably Burgh's fetish
>>58286803He probably got a health code violation for that. Ratata infestation. You know what, it probably makes sense for some Unova gyms to be the focus since they got changed between BW and B2W2 and there were some pretty dangerous gyms, like Skyla's.
>>58286764I remember the anime having more than a few episodes about gyms being run so poorly that Ash had to take time out of his journey to help them out. And with the anime's implications that many of these gyms don't have more than a couple pokemon and only have two or three employees, one of which is the gym leader... There's plenty to bash without making stuff up.
>>58286865>without making stuff up>the anime
>>58286900True. But it's ~officially~ made up bullshit.
>>58286764Well yeah Kitchen Nightmares isn't about visiting the well run restaurants but the shitty obscure ones that make for hilarious drama. You'll have to go with unofficial/minor gyms that don't make the cut for the most part.
>>58286764Grant's gym forces you to rock climb without any equipment whatsoever
>>58286764The tone would have to be more of a parody in nature I’d say, and having it set a few years before the games could help make things easier for the writer as maybe there weren’t as many standards (possibly for reasons that the fic would explore).Concepts to explore:>SurgeThe gym’s training protocols for his gym trainers could be harsh (think shock therapy for bad performance)>SabrinaHer gym trainers could get lost in the warp puzzle and nearly die while being lost>JanineI could see Kona leaving lots of random invisible shit everywhere as a test to Janine… the gym trainers become the biggest victims>WhitneyToo easy. Could easily see her being generally an immature brat when she starts, with multiple trainers not being given badges and just generally being awful.>ClairPushes her gym trainers and their Pokémon way too hard in her early days overcompensating for something>BrawlySpends way too much time surfing/chilling out initially. Probably’s banging half the chicks in Dewford Town, causing lots of problems>FlanneryWrites itself. Her grandpa hands her the reins but she’s not actually prepared at all so there are a lot of dumb things to work out (heat stroke being common comes to mind). Male MC getting stuck in Lavaridge would be kinda comfy The romance plot line would be top tier
>>58287246Some more because fuck it>BurghThe honey for the honey traps hasnt been nailed yet, so people get stuck easily, and many peoples’ clothes rip as they get through the traps. Could be implied Burgh is gay and wanted the honey traps in the forest place to see guys stripped down>RoxieHer gym’s in a filthy basement with mold and other big building problems. Could see the gym’s neighbors hating the gym’s new musical “side effects.”>ClemontHis new gadgets being extremely hazardous would make lots of sense and would him trying to incorporate them into gym puzzles/obstacles would be a disaster in the making. All the while Bonnie miraculously not dying in these incidents.>Valerie doesnt pay her gym trainers well because the outfits are custom and incredibly expensive They have to strip on the side>IonoOther up and coming streamers start stupid feuds with her (which she falls for every time) that cause non-stop petty drama

Suggestions on naturally bringing up autistic worldbuilding?Classroom settings work for some specific things, but I'd really rather not cop out and just dump shit into author's notes.
>>58288527Web forums never fail>Hey, remember that old rumor about Ditto being everywhere? Welp, it's true
>>58288527I briefly alluded to what the X and Y cast got up to after the games by the MC seeing them on a series of posters Sycamore kept in his lab.
>>58287725Obligatory Mass Effect crossover with the first chapter being a timeline and the proceeding chapters being the first contact war.Personally, I'd prefer a story about a good guy Saren learning the power of friendship with Pokemon.
>>58287725Mass Effect and Halo would be easy as fuck I feel like. You already see Mass Effect crossed over with tons of shit.
>>58288527Make an character an autistic know it all that can't resist rambling, that's what Final Fantasy 8 does. The main character is a stoic loner who doesn't give a shit, and one of his squad mates is an overly friendly guy who loves spouting random fun facts and history about whatever situation they are in. Lets you easily dump whatever info you want the audience to know in the exact amount you want. You can have the guy start talking on whim for any reason, have him go on long ramblings, have him just give out a throw out a quick tidbit of info, and you can have him be tuned out or shut up by the other characters if you ever want to give a reason who why a more thorough explanation isn't given. Plus since he's just a guy and not some sort of all knowing authority there's no reason he would know vitally important info that you want to keep hidden. "Oh yeah, the Burned Tower? Used to be devoted to Lugia, but then it got burned down. I heard something about a legend of Ho-oh saving some pokemon from the fire, which is weird cause it was Lugia's tower. Where was Lugia I at?"
So many hints at ayylmaos and we have never officially been to another planet. Closest we've gone is other dimensions that may be like ours.
>>58290085An intergalactic league would be awesome, but it's too much work and GF is full of lazy faggots because they will buy it anyways
>>58290085The pokemon civilizations are like the Half Life Combine: they got fancy sci-fi tech, but they're completely unable to travel beyond their solar system and entirely reliant on their interdimensional gimmicks to get around.
1. Have your characters ask questions/be the type of people to ask questions to get them and the readers up to speed with functional information.2. As above, but more in detail because one of the characters is really curious because of reason X or likes hearing about it because of reason Y, and so on.3. Like a museum exhibit where there's a placard explaining the thing.4. Shameless rawdog exposition, pure lore dump, fuck the narrative, you're taking the big worldbuilding and you're going to like it.

Wait if a Moon-Stone evolving Pokémon stepped on the Moon, would it evolve?Makes me think of that fanon trend of PokéFics adding a cringe ass quality grading system to evolution stones that determine the power boost, all the Clefable on the moon might as well be legendary pokemon lmao.

>>58290775As elitist as it is to say, chapters under 3k words are most likely done for engagement farming purposes.
>>58290775The Ghost Type Specialist. It's a slow starter and has a silly cheat item but it's the last normal trainer non-anime fic I have ready before I have to go and actually learn how to search for them.I'll probably read real books for a while after, I need some stuff to ripoff for my own writing.
I gave 'Into the Unown' a shot and tried to look past the SI into 6-year old girl. The beginning was okay, getting a Dratini from Safari Zone and an Eevee from Bill, then working for Misty at Cerulean gym. enjoyable enough to read if I dont take it seriousbut then it jumps the shark (even more) this 10 year old with zero badges is fighting team rocket leftovers with mega evolutions, that need the Elite Four to step in and save the day. also Koga tries to assassinate her because she learned his clan's super secret Golbat move.now she's 12 and about to start going after badges with a Dragonite already. at this point I dropped it
>>58291520I read it until they got to a game corner and then I'd had enough.Probably the worst thing I've read because your brain has to constantly correct the incorrect tense usage. Funny to read on RR though because they have a bunch of really aggro author's notes on the early chapters in response to people saying they suck at writing kids. One of those cases where it needs a rewrite, the author knows it needs a rewrite, but they don't want to actually do it.
>>58290805What if an earth pokemon who lives on another planet is locked out of their evolution until they touch an 'Earthstone'? Though I wonder what that would mean for moonstone evolving Pokemon.>>58290810Indisputable fact.

Today's random writing prompt: Sunset
Has a fanfic ever used a Pinsir in the main team of 6? I've seen plenty of Butterfree, Beedrill, Scyther, Heracross, Larvesta .. this one even uses Ariados >>58285436But no love for Pinsir. Galvantula would also be cool now that I think of it
>>58294264Pinsir is shit and ugly and does not deserve to be a KANTOOOOOOOOOmon
>>58294264>>58294464I do imagine its status as a Pokemon that does not evolve AND the fact that Heracross is a more popular choice contribute to this.
What type is light/holy anyways?
>>58294778Fairy is the most fitting, but at this point Light has been spread throughout multiple types, most famously Psychic via Necrozma and Grass via Solar Beam & Solar Blade, which work thematicalltly since light comes from celestial bodies AND light benefits plant life.
>>58294778The moralfaggotry aspect of it is Fighting
>>58294691Heracross basically does Pinsir's job but better, excluding Pinsir's mega evolution but that mega isn't appealing enough for most writers to give it to their MC.On the "Heracross is more popular note," do you think that sentiment will ever create a hipster-tier counter culture among fic writers?
>>58294264Larvestas are a dime a dozen but have you ever seen a Volcarona?
>>58295008I don't know, Pinsir is a bit too middle-ground to be considered an underdog. People like to go with early routers or mons not of Gen 1 when they think of an underdog.
>>58295055While you're right it can't really be considered an underdog because many Bug Types aren't that good so Pinsir's naturally pushed up the hypothetical "rankings" (and it's gen 1), I think its menacing appearance and being cucked out of usefulness by Heracross gives it enough of an underdog vibe for me.
>>58295055To me Pinsir feels like the kind of Pokemon an older, wizened trainer might have. Someone who's down to earth and prefers a reliable Pokemon that isn't too flashy or built on gimmicks. The Command Wolf of Pokemon, if you will.
>>58295104>Dragonite? Salamence? Nah, I just ask my trusty Pinsir to throw things around
>>58295104
>>58294778in Japan, Dark type is Evil Type; Demonic Monsters if you will. Thus there should be a Kami/Light type to balance it. The problem is that Bug and Fighting were counters to it, and Fairy is included so that Clefairy can kill Houndoom as they initially intended them to do during GS's Development.
>>58295129If you're calling on Jap mythos, you have to find the mythos that serves as the other side of the duality. What in nip lore opposes demons? Then you have your answer.I'm not too knowledgable on nip lore, but China has the Celestial Court full of demon-hating martial artists, so if it's anything like China then Fighting is the natural "balance".
>>58295240First thing that comes to mind is Momotarou and En no Gyoja.
>Celebi >The most fairy looking Pokémon isn't a fairy type Fucked up, huh?
>>58295402Time is psychic...except for the embodiment of time itself, that's a steel type
>>58295613Steel because of Diamonds, the same way Palkia is water because Pearls. Dragon is the other "cosmic" type aside from Psychic as evidenced by how using Camouflage in space turns you Dragon-type, so it's safe to assume Dragon-type (& Psychic which are on the Lake trio?) encompass spacetime.
>>58295240>>58295768Psychic/fighting is probably the best type them, the lawful/light and "cosmic"

>>58297481Some are backstories for RP purposes.
>>58297481I've posted some of my characters from my stories there, but a character who is meant to work in a story and a character who is meant to appeal as a character are two different things I've come to realize. >no planet busters in Pokémon We're so weak, bros. No wonder Pokémon crossovers are rare.
>>58298060Honestly, I find big dick power scaling to be really dull from a story perspective.
>>58298060>who are the Creation Trio?
>>58298060Arceus scales into multiversal at least.
>>58298148Trash who can't even handle common pokemon that struggle with basic Rock Smash. At best they can slowly, very slowly, grind down a planet, but that's not quite planet buster.>>58298236Multiversal travel, right? Because slut for human cock can't even handle a splash of mercury.
>>58298309No, I mean as in he can literally create universes. That Sinjoh ruins event? That's him creating a whole new universe just to give you a newly hatched version of one his kids.
>>58298069>I find big dick power scaling to be really dull from a story perspective. It is, what makes powerlevel bullshitery isn't the top-ceiling of the powerlevel per se, a grounded setting can be really interesting despite a low-ceiling of powerlevel, what makes it click is how the MC uses their current toolset in relation to the obstacles presented, and how he works towards expanding his toolset taking into account worldbuilding, his current location, current knowledge, relationship to other characters, money, external pressures caused by villains, etc. Narrative weight is the core of what makes powerlevels and progression interesting, not "Godzilla punch Vs Ape Goku punch, WHO WINS??" (which to be fair, that's a fine discussion in and of itself, but some people get so caught up by it that they miss the forest for the trees, don't mistake a thought experiment with good storytelling).
>>58298318>him creating a whole new universeSetting aside the lack of confirmation on any of that, all they managed to create after all that effort was a Level 1 pokemon. Not quite a planet buster is it? Anyone can get a Ditto to do the same thing.
>>58298318>>58298331It basically resets the Universe so that you can have the Avatar of one of the three that led to the creation of the material world. Otherwise, it would outright state that all of the Arceuses (from transfers) are the avatars of the same deity.
>>58298060The max strength of a Pokémon is highly inconsistent and there are multiple ways you could intepret the Legendaries. Some writers make Pokémon vulnerable to mundane weaponry like knives while others make them impervious to heavy arms fire and basically natural disasters at even a middling level. Even if you don't give a fuck about powerscaling you should try to make the capabilities of a character consistent with the intepretation you go with, no dragonite going from face-tanking an explosive to bleeding out and dying after getting capped by a regular ass pistol. I don't even remember the name of it anymore but there was this fic I read where a characters swampert got shot to death like that and I was wondering how this magical creature that tanked all sorts of supposedly powerful attacks earlier is now frailer than a pitbull after scenting child-blood. It was built up as an emotional moment but its just seemed stupid and funny.
Imma be honest Pofag, shouldv'e kept the bitch as bitchy after the battle, would've made MC's eventual victory all the more sweeter. But I can see this more mature version as being more interesting and would probably avoid a one-dimensional character that just exits to be hated.I look forward to their urther interactions.
