No. Subgenres exist: just because two games are JRPGs doesn't mean they must play exactly the same. Pokémon is a monster collection game with JRPG elements; so it's a JRPG.The recommendation argument is fucking stupid, there's a large overlap of FF and Pokémon fans (and the early games rip FF and DQ a lot). Pokemon games are JRPGs, as most SMT and several Dragon Quest games have very similar mechanics and DQ is the most JRPG series of all time.Dark Souls is an action game with RPG elements. More specifically, it's a stamina action game like Monster Hunter, as opposed to a stylish action game like DMC or Bayonetta.
