USUM's U-Necrozma fight and Giratina's two phase fight in PLA caught me off guard. I was legitimately so happy to be team wiped and challenged in a Pokemon game I actually laughed with a child-like glee.
Before then, the only times I'd struggle was as a kid because I was the lazy type who didn't want to bother grinding, power levelling or anything like that so I'd usually end up at the Pokemon League with high enough levels for the first few E4 members but then I'd get my ass beaten by the last few leading to the classic case of keep battling against them until you brute force the necessary levels.
Except GSC. Cuz y'know, the levels in those games were low as hell. Despite how lazy I was I got all 16 badges without breaking a sweat.

A few months ago I defeated the league in SoulSilver. The Elite 4 is really easy but I had trouble with Lance. The three shitters (Charizard, Gyarados, Aerodactyl) were very easy with my Ampharos using a Choice Scarf. The issue was the 3 Dragonites though. They all have different movepools. I did have a Kingdra with Ice Beam though (fuck Voltorb Flip). Unfortunately I barely missed the OHKO because Lance sent his strongest Dragonite first. So I did spam a few Revives. The other two Dragonites weren't as difficult though.
This was the only time I used items during a fight in this game, but that disappointed me a little bit because I kinda felt that I cheated.

I got swept by Siebold's DD Gyarados in my first playthrough of X and I thought it was awesome. Too many Pokemon fans get salty when they run into any kind of challenge outside of clicking surf and immediately start throwing out buzzwords about game design and artificial difficulty. Makes it even more difficult if you are a rom hacker/fangame maker and want to put any thought into your bossfights, because the expectations have been set so low that you're guaranteed to be on the receiving end of Timmy Rage.

That Cyrus fight is pretty tough though from what I remember, I was doing some hardcore no potions Platinum Nuzlocke and wiped to him because his Weavile had a coverage move I didn't know it had and whatever my 'counter' was died to it. Then the rest of my team was shit like Torterra, Rotom-A, Staraptor so gg.

Cyrus' Gyarados and Weavile hit harder than literally anything else in the game, both before and after. The Elite Four and Cynthia paled in comparison, and I made sure to give my Drapion Thunder Fang afterwards just to deal with more Gyaradoses.

The last two pokemon games I played were PLA and USUM.
Volo and Arceus both took me several attempts and Ultra Necrozma easily swept me during my first attempt. USUM in general was more difficult than the average Pokemon game, Totems normally required actual strategy instead of easily falling to brute force.
If we're counting spinoffs then Wish Cave and Joyous Tower in PMD: RTDX were both incredibly difficult despite me clearing both on my first try. Haven't tried Purity Forest yet.

I remember struggling with it when I was younger but beating it with only 2 of my pokemon dying, this was when I was younger and my only stab move on garchomp was fucking dragons rage and my only grass move on torterra was leaf storm, what is he running to be having this much of an issue with Cyrus?

Why is it that Pokémon fans consider a single loss to be insane difficulty? You would expect to lose sometimes in other games, even JRPGs, but it happens so infrequently in Pokémon. A battle like Gen II Red is supposed to challenge you purely through the level gap, that's the only reason he's a challenge, and yet Pokémon fans complain about not having a team of six level 81s and 12 types with STAB, perfect IVs, min-maxed EVs, egg moves, and held items. They need the sides set up while bowling because losing once (in a game where you can easily soft reset, preventing any consequences) is considered "bad game design" rather than a challenge.

Under the assumptions of a blind run and no optimizations in choices (just pick/catch things first time, no resets for better natures/IVs/etc), then USUM and BDSP. Ultra Necrozma and Cynthia were a real bump for the franchise classic of "click a damaging move and overwhelm all your opponents in your first run before becoming Champion"

I think I cheesed this boss with a flash fire growlithe I had by pure chance.
Also in SV I went the wrong way near the start and those parrots with Hustle and Aerial Ace were one shotting my Pokemon.
