I think that's a fair point. I'd probably say if you could find a vendor that only takes off 20% it's not a bad deal especially for a pricier card. 30% is definitely a bit much.
Using ebay as an example with the vendor you remove having to pay for shipping and insurance for your card, worrying about your card getting lost in the mail, and you don't have to deal with a potentially dickhead buyer if they try to scam you later. Even better if they pay you in cash you won't get taxed for it later on.
Mind you I'm not saying it's better, I just always thought that selling to a vendor wasn't bad.

Vault X binders are too soft.
Letting some random turn the pages and bend cards and fuck them up.
Toploaders basically make them idiot proof.
Vault x also has very little fabric in the spine, which creates binder bulge.
Also the slot closest to the spine is slightly curved and not flat, because they went so cheap.
This causes those cards to bend and warp over time.

In general, for vintage cards, 1st edition versions just completely negate all unlimited version value. There are some exceptions of course. But for the most part, the unlimited version of a card will be under $100, while the 1st edition can be many hundreds.
