Musically? Goldenrod City theme for cities, Route 38 for routes, Burned Tower for dungeons, Johto Champion for battle.
Directorially? Gold and Silver for salvaging a project that could've spelled the end of the Pokemon franchise and made them the best games in the series despite the long (for its time) yet rushed and messy development that led to many flaws that still plague its remakes.
He made the right call to delay the game and switch to GBC so the wow factor of the Day/Night system can be fully felt with full color palette change, which would've been barely noticeable on the original Game Boy.
