Given how bad DP was I'm not surprised Masuda just wanted to make a better game out of the very solid basic combat gameplay. On the other hand I'm not surprised that XY changed the type matchup table and it and later games relied on gimmicks instead because where do you go from there? This is on top of Masuda moving towards simultaneous international release for marketing reasons, those central gimmicks are typical "to sell toys" shit you see in a lot of series, especially in tokusatsu shit that's one of Pokemon's major inspirations.Back to the central point though, I think iterating on a good idea is sometimes really important. If you only go for innovation sometimes you lose some core aspect and it's hard to backtrack on it. I guess what I'm saying is that I liked most of the streak from Super Star Ultra to Star Allies and I like 3D World, and all those games just iterate on the same basic gameplay but the basic gameplay is solid so who gives a shit.
