>Ponyta: Its body is light, and its legs are incredibly powerful. It can clear Tokyo Tower in one leap.- Translated Red & Green(JP) Pokedex Bro seriously? It's a 333m tall structure for fuck sake. I mean I could kind of see it if was like spring coil pokemon or like a kangaroo pokemon with a concept all about high jumping but Ponyta? It's just a fire horse. I would sooner buy some ridiculous claim about high speed.
>>58300983The horse is on constant fire and you're concerned that it can jump really high?
>>58300983This is literally why it learns Bounce.
>>58300983>I would sooner buy some ridiculous claim about high speed.Rapidash: It can gallop at a top speed of 150 miles per hour. It can race as fast as a bullet train while ablaze.
10 year old children (canonically the authors of pokedex entries) are not to be taken at their word
>>58301061>canonically the authors of pokedex entries[CITATION NEEDED]and no, your favorite reddit meme is not a valid source
>>58301068Fuck off, you zoomer retard.
>>58301081Huh?
>>58301090>I am a retard
>>58301100The pages are blank because it hasn't automatically recorded the data yet.
>>58301103Data != Subject text entryThe dex is recording the objective data of pokemon (species, height, weight, etc) while the trainer writes the flavor text. Why is this difficult for you to understand? If the dex was creating absolutely everything about the page, why even bother catching the pokemon? At the end of the day, if neither the dex nor the trainer know anything about the pokemon before it is caught, the text is being made up on the spot by someone.
>>58301061*11/12
Did you miss the Sword and Shield fossil dex entries? The entire Pokedex is suspect now.
>>58301180out of ten!
>>58301112Oak literally tells you that catching the Pokémon GETS the data, he didn't say anything about the trainer typing it in.
>>58301192Not canon
>>58301210>dataplease see>Data != Subject text entryIn scientific literature, which the pokedex is aiming to be the defacto source on pokemon knowledge, DATA is anything that is MEASURABLE with OBJECTIVE and VERIFIABLE FACTEverything outside of the entry text is plausibly measured by the pokedex automatically because the trainer physically has the pokemon in possession for the dex to scan. Now please fucking tell me where the pokedex is getting ANY of pic related from a FUCKING SCAN!
>>58301235The most reasonable explanation is that there is already a database which links the scan to the entry and reference picture. On one hand this gives it credibility, on the other hand since it's not magic it's bound to have bullshit in it

>>58300983Does Tokyo Tower exist in PokeWorld? I know Yamabuki (Saffron) is the Tokyo of Pokémon, but I don't remember a tower like that.
>>58301235there's nothing saying our character isn't putting all that in manually. Even in PLA we actually are putting that all in manually. A lot of the pokedex entries even sound like something a 10 year old would say, not a 50 year old professor of pokemon.
>>58301739Celadon is part of central Tokyo too and closer in location to where the real world Tokyo Tower would be but no, it doesn't seem to be there. At least not ingame which is just a simplified abstraction
>>58301739>>58301850Unless you wanna argue its the celadon store. Tokyo Tower does have a big commercial center building under it, but if that was the intention I guess they would have at least made the overworld building taller
>>58301783The dex entries in PLA are written by Laventon.
I like threads like these because they remind me of one of the biggest modern day media literacy problems, e.g. low-functioning autists twist their brains into pretzels trying to validate a headcanon that’s explicitly contradicted in multiple ways rather than just accepting that the setting in itself is fundamentally shaky.
>>58301061Retarded meme. The pokedex fills itself out automatically. It observes the pokemon's physical characteristics like height and weight and it observes the pokemon's behaviour to write the pokedex entries. In PLA, the pokedex isn't invented yet, so Laventon has to write this information down manually. >b-but how does the pokedex fill out instantly when you catch a pokemonGame abstraction. Same reason (You) can care for a full team of pokemon with varying diets and needs while a normal non-trainer in-universe only has a meowth and the average trainer has 2 to 3 pokemon of the same type. Trainers that can do what you do are exceptional.>b-but how does the pokedex talk about myths and cultureGame abstraction. It's an encyclopedia, that's the sort of thing an encyclopedia would talk about.>b-but how do you know these are just game abstractionsSee the actual lore >>58301090>>58301950Ironic to talk about media literacy and then ignore the lore and say that game mechanics make the setting "fundamentally shaky".
>>58302529Actual lore here>>58301100
>>58301061Nope. SM/USUM hard confirms that the player isn’t the one writing the entries, and that the pokedex is more akin to a public database that scans the pokemon before adding a known document about it.
>>58302750Moving the goal postIn the later games, it's simply a database of entries written mostly by children and retards.
>>58302787>in the later games it’s [HEADCANON]
>>58302750>the pokedex is more akin to a public database that scans the pokemon before adding a known document about it.This is also headcanon.
Professors have written the actual pokédex entries since they started keeping pokédexes children. Just because (You) came late to the party and were too retarded to do any research doesn't mean kids write the 'dex entries. Just means real life kids are fucking retarded.
>>58302877Nope. That’s literally what happens when you capture the pokemon, seeing as the entries are the same as an old pokedex.
>the pokedex entries are written by the kid protagonists>future games and spinoffs use the same or similar dex entries repeating the same information>not a single professional pokemon researcher has edited any of these "childish" entries or weight and height that makes no sense>every other adaptation where the dex doesn't record data presents the entries as factsIt still baffles me how this reddit headcanon caught on
>>58302870Why are you quoting yourself?
>>58301579>this will make me look less autisticAutism.
>>58301061......I'm more inclined to believe that the Pokédex is more akin to the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" in which many of the entries were made out of second-hand accounts by the locals. Nobody bothered to do thorough research on the most dangerous of monsters out of fear. Hell, most of the legendaries' entries were lifted out of folktales and myths.
>>58302750The Pokédex is designed to identify the species you encounter and provide information on the one you caught. It didn't apply to the media outside of videogames.
>>58302892>anime
>actual direction from Game Freak>"whaaa, nuuuu stahpit, i no WUNT to gibs muh headcannons upsie"Fuck off faggot, not my fault you're a retarded secondary motherfucker who can't even get the concept of independent research.
>>58301739It appeared in the anime, they did a Mothra parody that incorporated the iconic Tokyo Tower scene.
>>58300983>doubting the power of ponyta
>>58302529>while a normal non-trainer in-universe only has a meowth and the average trainer has 2 to 3 pokemon of the same typeMy assumption is that rando trainers only send out the Pokémon they're willing to fight with, not their entire squad. Ace Trainers and Veterans should have quite the amount of mons, but they're out only training a few.
>>58300983It probably uses the fire as kind of like a jetpack booster
Why do people find it so hard to believe that beings in this fantastical world can do fantastical things? They shrink now? I headcanon that the Hisui people had mental illnesses that made them percieve it that way! This creature is said to jump the height of skyscrapers and mountains? Uh... the Pokedex is written by babies! That's the ONLY explanation! Not the fact that we live in some world where animals have superpowers and can master cultivation or some crap. Tyranitar consuming chunks of mountains is also an exaggeration made by a kid, a kid who would know how the fuck the maps that Tyranitar forces people to redraw work. The Galar fossils are described like naturally occuring species? That's- actually you know what in this case it's probably the entire point.
>>58303540>All this revisionist diarrhea in a gen 1 thread
>>58303540I hate midwit faggots like you that can't conceptualize plausible limitations in fantastical settings.
>>58300983Since in the pokeworld cities and such are so shrunk down you could assume their version of the Tokyo tower is also chibified and therefore not nearly as tall
>>58303742What's a plausible height for a fictional horse to be able to jump?
>>58300983Thanks for cropping her face so that I can focus on her voluptuous ass
>>58303742Limitations that work within their own logic and their own world. Is there a problem with a creature so great that it can alter topography and the ecosystem through its everyday lifestyle? How about creatures that have learned to adapt to the former? And creatures that have adapted to those? So on so forth. If a setting breaks its own rules I'd question it, but it is free to have its own to start with. If animals jump heights comparable to the hills of their territory - and have enough endurance to survive or even shrug off the fall that follows - so be it.
>>58304612I take it you wouldn't raise an eyebrow if it said Ponyta can jump at the speed of light so high it can go through the atmosphere into space?
>>58300983But why would you crop out her face?
>>58305458What's a reasonable height then, faggot?
>>58300983Even if it can jump that high, surely the fall would kill it.
>>58307220But it's hooves are harder than diamond
>>58300983Are we sure that "it can clear" doesnt mean destroy/take down? Other dexes mention it's powerful trampling, breaking a tower made up of metal sticks seems less farfetched. Can someone check if the japanese text unequivocally means "jump over"?
It just uses the fire of its tail as a thruster.
>>58307461>Braaaaaaap
>>58305458I would, but if horses that jump into space are part of the setting and they doubled down on it by say, making them prey on Minior or making them victims of Rayquaza's feedings if he needs more protein, why not?
>>58307259It does.>1かいの ジャンプで とうきょうタワーも とびこえる。
>>58307599that's the evolved form thoughit's easier to believe for Rapidash than Ponyta
>>58307599>ash running as fast as themmy hero...
To me what irks me is not that it breaks suspension of disbelief, it's the fact that of all the things to write about Ponyta they thought that should be it. It's red and green, they didn't know the franchise would go on, that could have very well been THE only thing they would ever get to write about it.
>>58309619The OG idea was pokémon exist in the real world, so to show how impressive they were vs real life shit, they wrote stuff like that (cf Raichu knocking out/killing indian elephants). It got successful, so they then went and started building a separate universe but at the start and for all a quirk of fate could have beens, it would have been a one'n'done oddity.
>>58309623My point is that high jumping isnt really at the core of Ponyta as a concept. Raichu is the electric critter so naturally they are gonna write something about their extraordinary electric powers.Ponyta is a fire horse. Fiery steeds are popular in mythology and the fire also works with the idea of horse speed(some kind of nitro boost or just so fast the hair gets on fire)Horses aren't particularly notorious for high jumping, google says the record is 8 feet for a horse trained it's entire life to do that. The point is that it's a weird thing to choose to highlight for the fire horse. If it was a kangaroo or a puma or a frog or a grasshopper or even a dolphin pokemon (which are all jump-centric animals) it wouldn't be weird.
>>58307237So? It'd still splatter into a cloud of red horse mist.
I don't think the idea is that if Ponyta is standing still right at the bottom of the tower it could just spring up and go over. Its more that if it's running at its highest speed from far away and jumps it could reach that high
>>58309744Still ridiculous
