It's the fact that most kids stopped watching the anime after Ash started dropping his OG bros for new shitters and turds (therefore having no exposure to Skarmory and Slugma's debut episodes).Skarmory was only on a route most kids didn't bother visiting and wasn't used by any trainers outside of Crystal's Battle Tower, and Slugma was Kanto-only, which most kids didn't play long enough to find out about because they either didn't make it that far, or got bored when they realized Kanto was an empty husk of its former self, and ultimately none of them bought a strategy guide that came with a Pokedex to let them know these mons existed, nor were they ideal choices for merchandising over the baby shitters, Marill and the likes.

I personally never saw Skarmory in gen ii because my Crystal cartridge had a dead battery so I never could get far enough to where I might see one. Never saw one until I actually played Gen III myself and assumed it was a Hoenn mon for a while.

>>58301944I played Crystal when I was a kid for a fair bit and never saw a single Skarmory in game, there really isn't much of an incentive to go down towards route 45 to begin with and Skarmory is a rare encounter too, so I never figured out Skamory was a gen 2 Pokemon until years later in 2009 or so that I watched the Johto anime's reruns and figured out it was in fact a gen 2 Pokemon. Slugma only shows up in Kanto way too late into the game, is a terrible Pokemon and wasn't exactly popular or well known when it came out, so again, most assume it was from gen 3 due to the lack of exposure or knowledge. The fact you aren't aware of any of this makes you seem like a zoomer if anything considering this has been talked about since the early 2000s.

Slugma I get, it's a shitmon that's barely in the gen 2 games and gen 3 has an entire area full of them, but I'm not sure why Skarmory is lumped with it.
