People were already biased against it because Grass was thought of as the lame starter type back then, people mostly flocked to Fire or Water, and also Meganium being cutesy next to Typhlosion and Feraligatr's more aggressive designs lost it cool points in the eyes of 90s kids. But then on top of that, its stats were just entirely unremarkable, very much geared towards support, which a) it wasn't even all that good at, and b) is not what most people want from their starter, which often end up as your most powerful team member. You'll notice they haven't made another fully support-focused starter since Meganium, even Serperior seems to have been built around Contrary letting it sweep, despite not having access to the ability in Gen 5. Meganium just lacked offensive power, so it got overlooked in favour of the "cooler" options. Plus, on top of all of that, Grass sucks in Johto, and there was just no way around that as soon as they designed the gyms the way they did. They didn't repeat any gym types from Kanto, and Kanto already used all the types Grass is good against, so Chikorita ended up being completely screwed over basically by necessity.And then as for Serperior? Well it didn't get access to Contrary until later, but that's really all that was bad? Popularity-wise it was leaps and bounds ahead of the other two, and yeah its stats sucked, but again, probably because it was meant to Contrary-boost and was balanced around that. Movepool is pretty abysmal to this day for some reason though. Aside from that though, not sure what about it got the short end of the stick? It did fine compared to Emboar and Samurott.

Mega Chesnaught looks great. Mega Delphox looks great. Mega Greninja looks like a poor man's Ash Greninja with welfare shiny colors. Gosh, what a downgrade.

To make things even more painful, I noticed a while back that Meowscarada's stats are literally just Sceptile's, but with the offenses switched, with stats being optimized a bit better, a better movepool, even a better selection of special moves in spite of it being a physical attacker and 3 extra speed to REALLY drive it in that Gamefreak fucking hates Sceptile, and of course Meowscarada gets a broken ability in Protean when Sceptile gets the useless Unburden and the even more paradoxically retarded Lighting Rod when it Mega Evolves, ya know, the quad Electric resistant Pokemon gets an Electric immunity ability and it's way faster than most Pokemon that can spam Electric moves to boost it's special attack in doubles anyhow. I'm disappointed in Greninja not because he looks like recolored ash-greninja but because they decided to randomly have it spin upside down instead of having teh shirukien on it's back like ash greninja did, like if you're gonna recolor it's psuedo mega don't try to dress it up by having it hang upside on in it's weapon it looks silly when it's not moving or launching an attack I wish the anime weren't so far up it's own ass with it's story I'd love to see these guys on screen battling it out
