I don't know if USUM is the best Pokemon game ever, but it sure has as much content as some of the best games in the series, such as HGSS or Platinum. I'd call it underrated, that's for sure.

in a vacuum, sure. i think they're mainly only hated because of the changes (and lack of changes) they did from sun and moon. my main complaint is that the pokedex is a little too big. you could introduce a whole bunch more pokemon via wormholes/island scan, but it feels slightly bloated. b2w2 with 300 seemed just right and kalos is definitely too much, though i will admit it's hard to give many pokemon that i think would be better off out of it. the only other major complaint (which somewhat contradicts my previous one) is that i think they should've added way more ultrabeasts than just the 4 (well 7). double the amount we had before and have more of them attack in the time between lusamine going off to fight necrozma and the ultra necrozma fight (would be cool if they had abilities besides beast boost too). overall i really enjoyed them (and don't have a switch lol) and i think i agree that they are the best games, or at least my personal favorite.

Some people claim that it sped up the long and boring first island, but I don't know if that's true. It cut out some cutscenes, but it also added some cutscenes, and it forces you to do the shitty fucking Mantine surf
The "new areas" they added are legitimately insulting. The "pikachu hideaway" was literally just watching a pikachu stand there and repeat an animation over and over. Ultra Space was a literal hallway.

I still appreciate that it's the last game before dexit, and it had Z moves and megas.

You don't fight the pokemon-human fusion, it's just another trainer/boss battle with an interesting NPC design.

Ultra necrozma was kidn of nice as a one off gimmick, but I think just about anyone would have a hard time defending it as a well deisgned boss fight. It's stats are so OP that you basically have to cheese it. Or have knowledge of that fight ahead of time and tailor your team around it which is what I did.
