The worst part of that it reduces the characters to having the same personality just for a gag, and TR not appearing every episode has been common since BW. World building emphasis has been common since DP, and XY dedicated entire specials setting up Mega Evolutions, Team Flare, and Zygarde. Hell even after the main story ended there's a special dedicated to Yveltal generally being a dick to ancient people.
