>FAQ
>What is this?
People are turning into Pokemon. Some are having the time of their lives, and some are struggling to survive. These are their stories.
>How do I join?
Just start posting.
>What's the lore?
People and animals (and at least one tree) are changing at random in their sleep, waking up still in the real world, but now as Pokemon, and nobody knows why (that includes you. Please don't try to explain it). Just enough transformations are occurring to notably change day-to-day life without collapsing civilization. This is not the apocalypse, even if it might feel like it to some characters in the moment. Some people are more in touch with their instincts than others, and some have lost more of their humanity than others. That's about it. Avoid legendaries if possible

Someone brought up apricorns I think. Given I've now written a one shot where cheris showed up, I wonder if I should run with that concept.
Can't imagine many transformees who retained most of their humanity enjoying that prospect.

Maybe it's kinda sweet in a Pokeball.
>>
>>58387335
Well, for a luxury ball, maybe. Standard Pokeballs in the cutaway gags don't get so nice...
But you know what? Given how many are kind of losing themselves to their transformations, maybe most of them wouldn't mind being also pocket-portable.
Alternatively, they may want a Pokeball so that they can be thrown through windows to rob some place, or to be smuggled in to enjoy concerts or a movie for free/at all(in the case of larger Pokemon.)

>The purse was heavy on her shoulders
>Too heavy, too big, too obvious
>She was gonna get caught for sure, and then banned from the best theater in town
>All the specialty showings and those plush recliner seats, forever out of her reach
"Welcome to the Kinoplex, can I help you?"
>Too late to back out now
>One for the Perfect Blue remaster
"Sure, that'll be $20"
>The excessive foreign film markup steeled her resolve
>It faltered again when she realized where she'd left her wallet
>The perfect plan ruined by a small oversight
>She reached cautiously into her purse
>With every crinkle of the snack bags her face went a bit paler, and her breathing got sharper
>To the highly trained ears of a ticket taker, the noise was surely unmistakable
>She finally found her wallet at the very bottom
>Act fast
>She yanked it out of her purse, hoping the ticket taker wouldn't notice the thin strip of popcorn grease on its side, and thrust her credit card into his hand
>There was a brief pause
"Ma'am..."
>She winced
"Between you and me, we're not even allowed to search bags for snacks."
>He took the card and got her ticket.
"Enjoy the movie," he winked
>She didn't truly feel relief until she reclined in one of those plush chairs
>The lights to went down, the previews got loud, and she finally felt safe opening her bag
>Four bags of popcorn
>Four boxes of candy
>Three Pokeballs

I have come up with an idea to throw Silvally into my own story as a potential addition to the team.
It's very tempting and I have low impulse control.
The only thing dissuading me is the fact that I'm basically duplicating Valentine in semi-literal sense.

>>58388204
Everything I ever wanted and more. Thanks anon!
>>
Actually I take that back, there's three things dissuading me. That, Silvally can't really fit in a small Sedan, and the fact it's fucking SIVALLY(acquired as Type: Null.) It doesn't matter how much you go through to try to earn that, it's still pretty out there.
>>
>there are people who never got to play the latest Pokemon before being transformed
Grim.
>>
Progress on the next chapter of Serpent and Wyrm has finally started. Hoping to get it released in the next few days, will have plenty of time to write this week. Might have to cut it into two chapters? Wrote down a lot of ideas and trying to practice more with environmental descriptions, so not sure if it’ll end up being too long to all fit in one.
>>
>>58388914
I should be thanking you, I didn't know Perfect Blue was back in theaters until I went to look up something for her to be watching. Glad you liked it though.
>>
>>58390233
Imagine leaking a future design by being turned into it.
>>58390529
I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
>>
>>58390529
Oh goodie! I can't wait to read your chapter 2!
Chapter 2 of A Loser and a Very Lost Snowpix better than the original working title of Drifteranon, to be honest will be probably be started tomorrow or Tuesday.
I am having a little bit of trouble of coming up with content to fill chapter 2, since it focuses on Matsui leaving, so I might start committing to the Silvally idea, at least partially.
Valentine will get his brain scanned by a couple of college students, who were testing out an idea on behalf of a psychic classmate who figured out a really sketchy way of doing so. IF I commit, his memories will eventually end up in that Silvally as a basis for tactics and some skills, as well for the crippling self-doubts that would make them very easy to manipulate and control.
>>
>>58391378
Bit out there compared to most of the other content, but I'm interested.
>>
>>58391434
I'm honestly struggling to come up with any good ideas man. Glad you're interested, though, means there's still some reason to do it outside of just doing it for myself.
Type: Null/Silvally are, rather unfortunately, my favorite legendaries.
>>
>>58391442
I don't particularly care for most legenadries, but Null/Silv are an exception.
>>
Whoop, page 10. The board feels more active than before-probably because some anon actually fucking delivered for once.
>>
Quick bump
>>
Another one.
I'll come up with a green text next time
>>
>>58379534
New thread seems to be struggling a little, so I felt compelled to pull my finger out.

>The sheer, slack-jawed incredulity in your co-worker's voice was nothing short of delectable.
>They were completely in awe of you, or at least you liked to think so.
>You just waved harder and nodded your head vigorously, flexing the two arms that had just been pointing.
"I an alk oog ik ih, uh ihh ee!"
>"Uhhh..."
>Your co-workers glanced at each other, their expressions turning a bit distressed when they glanced back.
>"You're one of them!? Some fucking warning next time, maybe!?"
>"Why'd you even come to work like this, man!?"
>"This isn't... you shouldn't be... nnn..."
>Your burrow furrowed, but only for a moment.
>Okay, maybe not quite so in awe, then, but you could fix that!
>Of course, their tongues were way sharper than yours right now, so you'd need to prove yourself another way.
>The best way any Machamp knew how.
>...shut
>You turned, feeling no fear (or even mere awkwardness) at showing your back to people who were in no way entirely pleased to see you, and gazed into the truck.
>Pallets piled high with boxes, all wrapped up in clear plastic wrap.
>The same sight you'd seen dozens of times before, but every previous time, you'd dreaded it.
>You used to be so thin - never could put on weight, much less muscle.
>Even with a jack, the pallets may as well have been mountains.
>Shifting the boxes off the pallets was almost literally back-breaking some days.
>Your body hated you, the near-perpetual aching of your weak muscles doing you no favors over in what could laughingly be called academia.
>It was a wonder you'd even gotten this job in the first place.
>But you'd kept showing up. Needed the money, of course, same as anyone.
>Now, though?
>You grinned, and cracked your knuckles.
>Now the mountains just looked like toy mole hills.
>You stepped forward.
>"Umm, what is he doing...?
>"H-hey, you can't do that!"
>"Call the cops, man!"
>>
>>58395591
>You were unmoved by their words.
>Prove what you could do, then they'd see.
>That was all that mattered.
>Heedless of one co-worker starting to frantically dig for his phone, two of your hands lifted the edge of the pallet by the upper slat, then your other two hands slipped entirely under the thing and the first two let go.
>The weight now resting on your fingers was objectively immense, but felt trivial.
>The first pair grasped around the sides of the pallet, easing steadily under the edge.
>You took a deep, steadying breath, wanting to take this slowly.
>Not out of any fear of hurting yourself - you knew you could handle this with what might've been a concerning degree of certainty - but simply wanting to be careful.
>You'd already caused quite a bit of damage today, after all, and losing an entire pallet load of product to that clumsiness was not what you would've called proving yourself.
>Slowly, then.
>Slowly.
>You began to lift.
>"Woah. Woah woah woah, is he ACTUALLY...?"
>Holleee.. fuck..."
>Someone even let out a startled meep.
>A single step back.
>Two.
>You kept your focus, boxes resting precariously against your ample chest.
>These stacks had a concerning tendency to topple even while on a pallet jack, so it wasn't just a lifting act, but a balancing one too.
>You kept your focus, and slowly turned away from the truck and towards the building.
>The pallet was free and clear.
>With a faceful of assorted boxed groceries, you couldn't see your co-workers (just tilting your head enough to see where you were going without scuffing the whole thing was challenging enough as it was), but you could clearly hear them.
>"Huh. Heh, hey, know what? On second thought, maybe hold the cops..."
>"911, what is your emergency?"
>"Oh, uhh... s-sorry, nevermind!"
>Shuffling as that co-worker hastily stuffed his phone away.
>Then a swoosh as someone else pulled out theirs.
>"Hey, if we're actually doin' this stupid shit? This is goin' fuckin' viral..."
>>
>>58395607
>Good.
>This was when you'd want them to start filming you anyway.
>Careful, steady steps toward the cargo entrance while your co-workers fell silent.
>NOW they were presumably gawking in awe, as well they should be.
>You couldn't preen while carrying this thing, but lifted your head a bit, carrying it with equally silent pride.
>"Hey, what's taking so long back there!? I got other loads!" came an impatient bellow from the truck's cabin.
>"Oh, umm, sorry! Just getting started now!" one of your co-workers hastened to reply.
>Shaken from his trance, you heard him scramble over to the pallet jack and the scraping of it being roughly shoved it into the truck.
>"Good, hurry up!" the driver demanded. "Buncha useless... whaaat the Hell is that...!?"
>You grinned cheekily to yourself.
>He'd either taken that moment to check his mirror or glance over his shoulder.
>"He's, uhh, helping!" your co-worker tried.
>The truck driver didn't reply.
>Maybe he was going to call the cops.
>Or maybe he was in full not getting paid enough for this shit mode.
>Either way, you were crossing the threshold now.
>Carefully...
>"W-wait!"
>A co-worker called out just a LITTLE too late.
>There was a crunch and subtle ripping of plastic wrap as the top of the doorframe took a few of your boxes off the top of the mountain...

(Note: You'd think you'd have much larger doorways for this sort of thing, but I watched a video of a guy bringing a grocery pallet into his store and the doorframe was barely taller than the stack of boxes on the pallet, so I went with this)

For the “parents transformed into pokemon” story, what do you think of the dad as a Pangoro and the mom as a Grumpig?

It's your call.
If you think you can write something fun with it, go for it.
If those specific pokemon don't actually change anything, or do anything specific to those pokemon... Maybe pick something else.

Chapter 2 of L&LS is going okay. How do you guys come up with ideas for chapters in advance anyways?
I personally just jot down a bunch of one-two sentence ideas that I'd expand into chapters later, and try to order them in a manner that seems chronological. I feel like this system is lacking though.

Yes, I'm aware this question is better suited to the fanwork thread. I don't care.

I REALLY wish I got into the habit of using physical shit like that, I imagine it would've been so useful had I trained my brain like that. For now, I'm stuck with this method...

I think being a Pokemon would be cool. The only thing I'd be worried about is eating. I'd want to be a Ninjask since they're fast as fuck and can fly but idk how they eat. They have dex entries saying they eat so they can, I just don't know where their mouth is.

>The scene was already a chaotic mess when you arrived.
>Police were in the midst of trying to block off a two story residential home.
>Thing looked trashed to hell, eastern wall was rubbled.
>Was a refigerator chucked through it? Yeah, that was a fridge.
>Civilians and the press were trying to get as close as possible to capture the latest incident.
>Cops were shouting at them to get the hell back.
>All the while an agitated, territorial nidoking was squatting inside a building threatening to collapse.
>You sighed and moved to the back to pop open the hatch of the SUV
>A luxray leapt out, stretching his legs before sparing you a glance.
>"So, what're we dealin' with this time?" he grunted, working the stiffness out of his neck.
>"One Declan Marlowe, 34 male. Owns the house, probably turned last night, and turned bad. Neighbor went to investigate after hearing a commotion and was chased off by something 'big, purple and pissed'."
>"You'd know this if you actual read the report, Larson" you added smugly.
>"Fuck off, I'd like to see you flip through pages with these things for hands!" Larson growled, holding up a massive paw.
>You barked out a laugh before pressing down on your radio.
>"Kurt, how're we looking?"
>After a beat, Kurt's cheery voice cut through the static.
>"Alllll good to go! Got a clear line of sight on the front. Just get Sparkle Cat to chase the guy out and I should have an easy shot."
>Larson narrowed his eyes hearing that obnoxious nickname.
>You pat the luxray's head before returning comms, "Perfect, just wait for my call. You got a type advantage this go around so should make quick work, provided you don't miss like last time."
>A loud gasp filtered through the radio.
>"Hey! The only reason that happened was because Larson kept repeating 'don't fuck it up' over and over while I was aiming. That doesn't count..." Kurt grumbled.
>>
>>58402237
>By this point the police captain noticed you.
>"'Bout time y'all arrived, the hell took ya so long?" The old man grumbled.
>"Sorry about that, we had a... motion sickness issue on the way. Let's just say nausea leads to poor voltage control."
>The luxray growled.
>You coughed. "Anyways, we're briefed on the situation and have a plan, so this'll be taken care of. Just make sure to keep the front of the property clear."
>The captain shrugged. "'s long as it gets taken care of soon, we're swamped with calls as is and can't keep most of the force in one spot."
>He walked away, yelling at his subordinates to move the perimeter up to the street.
>Showtime.
>Circling the house showed that the internal damage of the house was substantial. You couldn't tell what room was which.
>No sign of the angry resident though.
>Shit, hopefully he was still there.
>You cleared your throat before turning on your megaphone.
>"Declan Marlowe! I know that you're confused and upset and scared, but we're here to help! If you still have your sense of self, I need you to exit the building in a calm and orderly fashion so we can transport you to a safer location!"
>You paused, waiting for a response that never came before continuing.
>"If you don't cooperate with us, we'll have to use more forceful means! This is your last chance!"
>Silence.
>Well, you expected this. you signaled to Larson that the hunt was on.
>>
>>58402251
>The luxray's eyes immediately lit up as he searched through the debris.
>Must be nice to have literal wallhacks.
>You waited on the front lawn as he stalked into the house, your hand on your radio ready to give the signal.
>After a few seconds you heard a cat-like yowl followed by a thunderous roar.
>Larson reappeared through the front door, electricity shooting through the doorway at the raging occupant.
>Wouldn't do much except piss it off, which was perfect.
>"Fuckin' hell, bastard was hiding underneath all that shit waiting for someone to ambush!" the luxray panted as he ran up beside you, turning and crouching into a defensive position.
>The doorframe and most of the surrounding wall exploded forward as the nidoking surged forward.
>Shit, that thing was fast!
>"Kurt, take the shot, I need you to take the shot right now!" you shouted into your radio.
>You tried to stumble backwards, everything slowing down as a bigass purple fist started to careen in your direction.
>Not even a second later the crack of an inteleon's hydrosnipe slammed into the nidoking's skull.
>The poor bastard was instantly unconcious.
>You heard a cheer and an "I told you so" from the radio as you took a deep breath to calm down.
>"See, quick and easy" you smirked at Larson once your heart wasn't bounding in your ears.
>"A quick and easy suicide more like, what the hell were you doing standing so close?!"
>"I thought it would look cool if he was incapped in front of me, like some anime shit" you sniffed.
>Larson rolled his eyes. "...did you really have to tell the police captain that I got car sick?"
>"Hey, he asked what was up and I told the truth, Sparkle Cat. Next time I'll get you that anti-nausea med my dog takes before going to the vet."

>Substations were unoccupied for a reason.
>The low hum told you everything.
>Was it your new ears? Your better hearing?
>Maybe that noise always was, and you never noticed.
>Maybe it was the pokémon further in.
>Careful not to catch your fur on anything, you shimmied past the fence.
>Past the ‘Do Not Enter’ signs.
>Shouldn’t be here.
>Didn’t need to be an electrician to know this was dangerous.
>The human and the lucario agreed.
>Reason and instinct.
>Yet they both pressed you forward.
>A deep desire to right this problem.
>The cold concrete on your paws clashed with the flashes of warmth across your fur.

>Good thing you didn’t need it.
>Quick shots of electricity did the job.
>Over and over, rodents of all imaginary shapes and sizes fried the cupboard’s contents.
>Sweet, dried fruits and smoked nuts filled your nostrils.
>Gnawed boxes, torn bags, and half eaten bits of everything lined the floor.

>You couldn’t name them all.
>First, you considered shutting the door.
>Trapping them in here might be doable.
>But then again, they’d fried the lock.
>Could’ve gnawed their way in here.
>Might be a vent near the floor they crawled in.
>No, trapping them could make them defensive and jumpy.
>But they had to go.
>You crept to the opposite side of the field office, slinking quietly below the window.
>The thin walls of the building would make this easy.
>And if this didn’t work, well…
>Before you thought of the many bad things that could happen, you slammed your palm against the exterior.
>Again and again.
>The ferocious noise would’ve given anyone a startle.
>And these were mice.
>Squeaks and frightened cries filled the cramped quarters.
>Once the raichu bolted, the rest followed.
>A few stuffed cashews and dates in their maws before scurrying out the door.
>Most had the good sense to leave the open space, hurrying out the front gate.
>Some ran further into the station, hiding among the industrial equipment.
>Hopefully they found other exits.
>You weren’t keen on chasing them out by force.
>Inside, the smell of electrical fire and lukewarm fruit oddly mixed.
>Walls of wires, dials, gauges, and breakers behind army green, metal panels filled a back room.
>Some circuit breakers were flipped.
>The desire to flip them at random was childish, but strong.
>You’d surely cause more problems than you fixed.
>There wasn’t a clear indication on what should, and shouldn’t be flipped.
>If any.
>Someone with experience was needed, and that wasn’t you.
>Damage seemed minimal.
>The rats were more interested in the trail mix than the instruments.
>Stale, old PPE was shoved in a broom closet.
>It should have been obvious earlier, however.
>The rubber, insulated gloves had fingers for people, and your wrist spike would gouge the material.

>You exhaled.
>Slowly.
>Long and calm.
>The hum was lower here.
>Let you focus.
>Your aura sensors trembled and lifted.
>Webs of life beneath the stone and concrete came alive.
>Between and underneath the slabs, the dull background of invertebrates and simple plants speckled their aura.
>Past the dim glow below, cold machinery and electric blasts barely registered.
>Only the crimson mound.
>A bright and beautiful aura, deeper within.
>Nestled against the most dangerous equipment without a care.
>And the small, hungry lights coming near it.
>Pleading and…
>Frightened.
>Scared.
>Every creature has an aura.
>To each their own.
>Wholly unique.
>Once the scarlet stood…
>An audible, exaggerated gasp punctuated with electricity rolled over the substation.
>You knew.
>You looked out the window, towards the equipment.
>You’d seen this aura.
>One of your first.
>”Bully!?” A high-pitched, feminine voice yelled.
>In a flash, she stood.
>White with lightning and atop a transformer.
>The sky crackled.
>Arcs of energy pulled to static poles, barely containing the waterfall of electric current.
>”Where’s the bully!?” She demanded.
>The zeraora.
>Kat.

Hell yeah, glad to see her back. I'm sure lucario would try to convince Kat to leave the substation peacefully, knowing that she's somewhat still mentally there. Whether it comes to blows or not really depends on her, and I have a feeling after having to chase storms to get her juice on, leaving behind such a seemingly limitless source of power would make zero sense.

This is wonderful. Love the character interactions. Subtle things like Larson getting headpats really sell how these cops have adapted to and normalised having Pokemon in their ranks, incorporating their abilities into their procedures (since Pokemon are so varied, any organisation that wants to employ them is going to have to hash out how best to utilise them on a case by case basis. When you consider different movesets, abilities, and synergies, writing a comprehensive manual for it would be almost impossible), but it still feels distinct from how the humans in the main series' setting act.

If it gives you any idea of how good this green is, I still find myself wanting further Larson and Kurt adventures despite the fact that you're already working on another story AND despite the fact that this has way too much overlap with Copanon.

Gotta say though, poor Charlie's face when he realises he's the only one who can't talk right...

>>58404393
This could be an instance where Lucarioanon learns that punching first and asking questions later isn't always the best approach. Then again, Kat might not have the mental sophistication to comprehend that what she's doing here is harmful to others. I definitely think he should at least try to parley in any case.

>>58403732
>>58404332
If these are the feelings these threads are engendering in people, I'd say mission accomplished. It's very hard to write anything positive that has even a loose grounding in reality these days, so the fact that these stories are overcoming people's (very justified) cynicism and allowing them to believe, even for a moment, that one could wake up as Pokemon and it be a GOOD thing, is really rather special.

Good onya, ya dickheads.
>>
>>58405177
I mean, I'm really, REALLY struggling with keeping things positive on my end. I really do hope that Valentine's story becomes the defacto upper limit on how cynical things can become here.
I need to get rid of this civil war plotline from my head but I genuinely don't know what to do after the Type: Null. I know that's a complete non-issue when that's like... 12 chapters away, but still.
>>
>>58405246
The stories don't all have to be super positive (Herding Cats I'd say is in a pretty dark place as of its last update), but I like that the bulk of it is overall positive vibes. Like I've said before, you do seem to have the chops to handle what you're trying to do, given proper proofreading and that you show some confidence in yourself.
>>
>>58405396
I'm not surprised, nor do I DOUBT I have the chops. Unlike Valentine, I recognize for a fact that I could easily clear most bars, and if I dare to be egotistical for a moment, I probably could've been someone you could've looked up to and heard about in the news for releasing a popular book, or a new best-selling game.
The problem is keeping my self-doubts in check, and to learn how to actually commit to things again. Those self-doubts like to completely demoralize me, and I've only bothered to actually do the things I dreamed of in the last 3-4 years. I have little experience with managing either at the moment.

I'll figure something out. I think I have a direction to go post-"darkest hour."
>>
>>58405515
In a strange way, you actually have more confidence in your abilities than I do in mine.

>tough coach
Absolutely need this, especially from a guy who invokes both Village People AND Punch Out in one go for me.
You do give really good feedback, and I hope my second chapter will positively reflect the feedback you gave me.
... Except the mixed tenses, which I apparently have issues identifying. People keep bringing it up but whenever I reread my own works, I struggle to find what they're actually talking about. We'll see if I can get better over time rather than an immediate improvement there.

Yeah nah, Valentine would have a death wish going through there lol.

>>58405177
I appreciate the kind words, and I'm glad you enjoyed it! I ended up liking them more than I thought I would too, it was just something I thought of during lunch at work that ballooned in scope once I got home.

They're originally CAIN RPG NPCs (basically chainsaw man / JJK inspired tabletop system) that I made for a game that never got off the planning stages. I'll keep them around for little one-shots here and there while chugging along on S&W; scenarios would deviate heavily from each other and swap POVs around to try to keep from stepping on Copanon's toes.

>Gotta say though, poor Charlie's face when he realises he's the only one who can't talk right...

Suppose the transformation was gradual instead of instantaneous. Do you think that would cause more or less societal unrest?

>>
>>58408074
I ran a story like this once. Yeah, it turned out to be horrifying. I would've repeated it here but A)that doesn't lead to many happy moments and B)the thread already settled on instant/near instant by the time I got here.
In a way, I am thinking about incorporating a slightly less horrifying version of that, where exposure to Pokemon results in you slowly gaining the benefits of their types IE: increased durability and heat resistance

And now we understand a little better why this thread has an unofficial moratorium on transformation sequences. Although, if we ever absolutely HAD to describe how the transformation actually works, I was thinking it could be like Pokemon evolution in the anime. This topic keeps coming up and understandably so, but I hadn't done anything about it because it's an inherently difficult question that depends heavily on how you choose to define what you'd consider to be a "tolerable" transformation. But this entire time I've had a feeling that the odds might not be as long as people think, so ultimately I really just had to knuckle down and lay some cards on the table.

The rules for what I chose to define as a "tolerable" Pokemon to transform into are as follows:

1: They must be bipedal. I made an exception for Swampert, but not for Samurott.
2: They must have arms/forelimbs of some kind and these must have digits of some kind.
3: Paw-like hands without opposable thumbs (as on Lucario) are acceptable, but boxing gloves, shovel claws without an opposable claw (such as on Sandslash or the Excadrill line), crab pincers, and arms that end in nubs (as on Jigglypuff and Raichu, despite their demonstrated ability to manipulate a microphone and plates of pancakes respectively) are not acceptable.
4: I also excluded a few Pokemon (like Furret and Tyrantrum) whose forelimbs are simply too short to be useful.
5: In the case of birds, I allowed those that have a demonstrated ability to utilize "wingfingers" to manipulate objects (Farfetch'd line, Decidueye, Mandibuzz, etc), or which straight-up have digits in addition to their wings (Archeops line), but disallowed all others.

This should, I hope, provide a relatively uncontroversial baseline for which Pokemon most people would find at least somewhat acceptable to transform into. Any argumentation beyond this should center largely around adding Pokemon to this list, not removing them. Note that I thought about imposing a size restriction as well, but I figured if PichuGuard and Stuart Little can do it, so can you.
>>
>>58415442
I mean cool but this was personal preferences, not asking for the Harkness test but with transformation into fantasy creatures. Controversy would've been fine lol
>no restriction on intelligence or instincts
That could get very hairy very, very quickly but I respect that.
>>
>>58415442
Now for the results.

Counting Lycanroc and Palafin as 0.5 acceptable transformations each, I wound up with a total of 253 species out of 898 species that are not legendaries, mythicals, ultra beasts, or paradox forms, divided across the generations as follows:

Gen 1: 45/149
Gen 2: 21/94
Gen 3: 30/125
Gen 4: 25/93
Gen 5: 50/143
Gen 6: 21/66
Gen 7: 10.5/61
Gen 8: 25/84
Gen 9: 25.5/88

This is around 28.2% of the possibilities, and keep in mind once again that this would sort of be your I-bent-over-backwards lower limit on just how poor your odds can get. Now don't get me wrong, those aren't particularly GREAT odds, but considering how much my life sucks anyway? I for one would be willing to take a punt on 28.2%. Gamblers have thrown their lives away on FAR longer odds than that. And this is further assuming that people sleeping in their beds on land are transforming into Relicanths and Huntails and shit. Considering the phenomenon already has enough direction behind it to not turn people into legendaries, it might well exclude exclusively oceanic Pokemon from the pool as well, noticeably improving your odds.

From here, I want to get people's opinions on whether you guys would broadly consider other categories of Pokemon to be generally acceptable to transform into or not. Some notable ones include:

1: Are all grass types with vines acceptable? Snivy's dex entry does mention it uses its vines with more dexterity than its hands.
2: Are all psychic types acceptable? One might assume they can all manipulate their environment to a satisfactory degree with their powers.
3: Do we extend "wingfinger" privilege to all birds?
4: Am I being too harsh and boxing gloves, shovel claws, crab pincers, and/or nub arms are actually acceptable?
5: Are quadrupeds with paws acceptable? Police officer Larson seems to be doing alright for himself, after all.

Thoughts, gents?

28.2% is a reasonable number I think. If your life is shit, you'd start seizing such odds.
The problem is benefit for me. My life is kind of ass, but it's not ass enough for me to just want to restart as something else entirely.

>with vines
Only the ones that have reasonable dexterity, I think.
>all psychic types
Nah. Some are fairly limited and don't have Telekinesis or any other obvious way to GENTLY interact with the physical realm.
>am I being too harsh
Well, I think there's a level of dexterity Pokemon have naturally that our animals wouldn't. See picrel.
>Quadrupeds
I feel like most would lose it if they were stuck as quadrupeds, unfortunately. It's not even a matter of dexterity, just adapting to the body would constantly remind you of what you've lost.
>>
>>58415569
I mean the whole point is that it's variable. Some transformed humans are relatively psychologically stable, while others have been reduced to a near bestial state. This is not necessarily directly correlated with the natural disposition of the Pokemon they've transformed into, as on one hand you have Fedorark being relatively stable despite the whole grudge against the living thing, and on the other end you have Ben on the verge of totally losing himself despite being a cute, relatively harmeless little kitty.

All transformed humans feel their actions influenced by the instincts of the Pokemon they transformed into, but this too varies from subtle nudges and intrusive thoughts to total mental takeover. Again, not necessarily directly related to which Pokemon you actually turned into.

>>58415608
Well if I do include boxing gloves, shovel claws, pincers, nubs, and too short arms, the viable number shoots up to around 326, improving your odds to 36.3%.
>>
>>58416056
>it's variable
Yeah, and I can't seem to get the variability right. My brain immediately goes "EVERYTHING MUST BE SAPIENT." Obviously, that is not what I actually want for my stories, but I feel uncomfortable when I try to correct my brain.

Honestly, that gamble right there would ABSOLUTELY make me not want to become a Pokemon. There's a random chance that I'm completely and utterly not me when I come out the other side, even if I get a perfectly fine body otherwise? Jesus, fuck that! Just clone my brain and put it in a Silvally called CABAL! It'll be WAY cooler than me facing identity death.

This does give me a thought though. I plan to end up on a college campus, where they're already experimenting with the various things Pokemon can do and trying to push their boundaries. I'm sure SOMEONE'S already taken note of the problem and is trying to find a cure. (Whether or not it's successful is a whole new ball game, but I'm looking to fit 3 experiments in and I've only figured out 1 so far, so having a second one is nice.)

>odds
Hmm, well for some of you, I'm sure that extra 10% is a gamechanger.
>>
>>58416087
>My brain immediately goes "EVERYTHING MUST BE SAPIENT."
It'd be fine to just go with that. Sure, what I described is generally what the stories so far have been going by, but there's a reason the FAQ is short and its guidelines very loose. There's nothing wrong with saying that, in your story, all transformed humans are, at worst, only on that "intrusive thought" level of instinct. You could even say transformed animals get elevated to human level intelligence in your story, or that there are no transformed animals at all.

Sure, doing that would make it less feasible to cross over with the other stories, but that's only a problem if you had any intention of crossing your story over with the other stories in the first place, which I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that you probably didn't.

>Obviously, that is not what I actually want for my stories
You've gotta ask yourself - do you only want that because it's what you see in the other stories? Or do you genuinely feel that it's important for yours? If it's the former, then I'd say just go with what your brain is screaming at you, for reasons I illustrated above. If it's the latter, it's then a question of whether it's more worth it to push through come hell or high water, or accept this as a new limitation on your story and then begin working around that limitation, which due to the art from adversity principle CAN actually be more fertile ground for creativity in the long run sometimes.

>I'm sure that extra 10% is a gamechanger.
Humans DO tend to perceive 1/4, 1/3, and 1/2 odds rather differently from one another.
>>
>>58416219
>if you had any intention of crossing your story over with the other stories in the first place
Valentine's is the second(?) to mention other stories. I also did have an idea for a crossover with policeanon, though my plans are messy and they may not even work because despite the fact I've been operating on the idea of Type: Null/Silvally joining the party, I've been wishywashy and considered throwing that out the window multiple times already.
I dunno, a clone afflicted with bloodlust does sound a bit too far out there.

Either way, I already kind of have Matsui struggling as is, so clearly I've introduced the concept to some degree. I've even planned for her to give in to some degree. Not to mention, restricting myself in this manner is pretty bad. It prevents me from learning to adapt.
I'm terribly conflicted on this.

What was the difference between the two posts? Cus mine was bad spoilers.
>>
>>58416235
I originally stated that the losing your humanity thing wasn't in the FAQ, which was just plain false. I brain-farted.

Fair play on the points about crossing over and Matsui's struggle. Perhaps in your case it might help if you were to include the more intelligent thoughts of the individual even as they're giving into their instincts - like the higher intelligence is still there, it's just being suppressed and still has its opinions on where these unrestrained instincts are taking them. Obviously Val logically wouldn't be privy to these hidden thoughts and opinions, but you could include them in your private writing notes. That might help alleviate the cognitive dissonance you're feeling somewhat. Could turn into your characters riffing on their own story, but that can be fun and cathartic in and of itself.

As far as the Silvally thing, yeah you'd be straying away from that mundanity and fantasy intersection that's been the broader trend, but if you can make it interesting and emotionally impactful? That's the far more important thing. If you wanna make it a little bit less sci-fi, though, you could maybe frame it that a person or animal transformed into Type: Null like normal, but became psychologically blank, like a computer waiting to be programmed - the Null is essentially comatose. If it happened on or near this college, they could easily have brought it in for study, or maybe the students Val's gonna meet have been hiding it from the faculty. A psychic type attempting to imprint a copy of a consciousness onto this unfortunate Null is still a fair bit more ambitious than anything DigiGirl has attempted, but might feel a bit less like you're introducing straight-up mad science in what our other stories have generally presented as being a relatively grounded setting, if it's focusing on the efforts of a Pokmeon trying to accomplish something with their powers, rather than humans trying to do impossible things with technology.
>>
>>58416373
Silvally is a tough one to work with.
It was too long to fit in here so I'll just put it here. https://litter.catbox.moe/ci4x8qazw362h2da.txt . Keep in mind that these events are supposed to happen over the course of at least 4 months, potentially longer, so you've got two hyper-intelligent Pokemon and one with the ability to warp memories working on this plan around the clock.

I do like your idea a lot though, and am likely to pivot to that, or some variation thereof. This whole grand scheme thing is a bit much and a bit... I dunno, dramatic? Not sure what to call it. It's another case which reminds me that I'm a horribly inexperienced writer who keeps throwing huge stakes at things immediately for literally zero reason though.
I'm just not sure about the whole transformation thing. Magearna, Mewtwo Porygon, and Type: Null/Silvally are explicitly artificial in nature. It'd be really weird if they somehow appeared, and ESPECIALLY Type: Null/Silvally due to its chimeric and cyborg nature.
>>
>>58414660
Thank you! Its been fun thinking of how certain animals would interact with pokemon, like the blue jay and the staravia. I think it adds a lot of tangibility to the setting.

>I'm most curious what Miirym thinks is going on.
Even Simon doesn't know, the only thing he's sure of is that she DOES remember him taking care of her as a lizard to some capacity (maybe she just remembers how he smells, and that was enough for her to recognize him as the snivy?). How detailed those memories are he has no idea, it'll be investigated in future chapters.

>>58414671
Dragonite is in charge now. You will eat your bugs and enjoy them.

>Though honestly she sees him as offspring for some reason.
Not necessarily offspring, but rather a developing pokemon she's familiar with that needs taking care of.

>>58414683
I'm chronically nauseous, so that dissonance of feeling sick to your stomach but your body wanting to eat is something I'm deeply intimate with.

>>58414714
I appreciate it! This was honestly the most time consuming and difficult part of the chapter for me to get to a spot I was satisfied with, so I'm glad my effort paid off.
>>
>>58416526
It does seem like a little bit of an unnecessarily massive scheme. Again, that's not necessarily a bad thing, but we have tended to keep things personal and relatively small-scale so far. It makes the government not indiscriminately coming down on all Pokemon everywhere like a ton of bricks make a bit more sense.

I guess I can see super intelligent psychic types becoming super villains, but it's still an awful lot of new tech they're inventing from whole cloth in a short amount of time. The Mystery Dungeon-verse, for instance, doesn't have hyper accelerated technological progression due to the presence of super intelligent psychic types. I do like the idea that Val could've been a fearsome soldier if he'd had more faith in himself and the resulting Null's character arc, though, which COULD still work with my idea, but flows a bit less naturally perhaps.

It's tough to say. If you wanna go for this full on huge scale capeshit silliness, I think you need to fully commit to it. Make it big. Make it absurd. Make Val feel small and overwhelmed. Have a good guy Pokemon superhero team show up slightly too late to the party and be embarrassed that they missed the action. Get really pulpy with it and draw the distinction from the other stories deliberately, such that when you do crossover with them, you have a very purposeful contrast. "Wait, you mean some 'mons in Nevada tried to take over the world? Well, that puts dealing with the FBI Zoroark in perspective..."
>>
>>58416802
This is gonna be an entire wall of spoilered text. Apologies.

I'm certainly not gonna demand you switch to my idea when yours already has so many moving parts integrated, but what I will say is that I kinda disagree on the point about the phenomenon not applying to Null/Silv just because it's artificial. The line between the natural and the artificial worlds in Pokemon is surprisingly blurry, with some artificial Pokemon being able to reproduce with natural Pokemon, specifically Porygon and Castform. Claydol and Golurk too are at least suggested to have been creations of ancient humans. All four of these species show up in Mystery Dungeon, suggesting that so long as a human is around to invent an artificial Pokemon at some point, that Pokemon CAN go on to integrate and become part of the natural Pokemon world over time, leaving the phenomenon with little reason not to select those species for transformations.

Now of course, GF generally avoids giving legendaries the ability to reproduce, but compared to most legendaries, Silvally and Urshifu are kind of just glorified regular Pokmon, and you really can't look me in the eye and tell me Urshifu can't reproduce. Mind you the Galar fossils can't (thank Arceus), but though it is also a genetic chimera, Silvally was put together far less haphazardly, so I could see it being possible. The cybernetics shouldn't be an issue given that literal AIs can bump uglies with living rocks and possessed sarcophagi and make an egg.

So yeah, I don't see that as so much of a problem myself. Maybe that's just me.
>>
>>58415500
>grass types with vines
If they're able to be used as decent enough replacements for hands given time to practice, that would be fine

>all psychic types
Probably take out the one's that are known to have difficulty containing vast amounts of psychic powers, or are always on the verge of psychic backlash. That would be way too stressful to suddenly be burdened with.

>"wingfinger" privilege to all birds?
If there are examples of other birds in the series that could manipulate things with their wings without explicit "wingfingers", that would be fine.

>being too harsh
Maybe. I think right off the bat it would kind of suck, but things like shovel claws and pinchers still work to some degree. Boxing gloves and nubs would suck way more.

>quadrupeds with paws acceptable?
I think it depends on if someone is there to help you out. Larson is doing ok because he has the support of his team if he needs assistance doing something he can't with paws (as much as they tease him for it). Ben on the other hand has been pretty much on his own from day one of the transformation, and we all see how that's going.

Well counting bipeds that can learn Vine Whip gives you another six (not as many as I thought. Huh), psychic powers gives you eight more for sure and another ten or so that are more debatable, and birds... ho boy... Yeah, if being a bird is totally fine and dandy then that's another 45 all by itself. Depending on how you slice other things, you could be look at over 40% odds at that point.

Like what was mentioned, my approach is that it’s just kind of random, though in my mind what something is turned into may have a very slight effect on intelligence level. I want that variability in my story because I think it would provide interesting encounters and situations for the protagonists, considering they’re removed from human civilization. None of the transformed animals would act or think like humans if they scored the IQ jackpot, more like intelligent beasts that are still heavily biased by instinct and the fantastical animalistic behavior of Pokémon.

Probably not explaining my thought process completely because I’m stuck in class right now, so sorry if it’s confusing.

>This is gonna be an entire wall of spoilered text. Apologies.
Yeah, this is why I went the text file route :P

>technology
A lot of what they'll use already exists, they're just taking it to the logical conclusion after stealing it. They're only inventing what's necessary to bridge some gaps between the technology they steal and what they want to do with it.
The Mystery Dungeon-verse is in active decline technologically speaking. The first game has a whole laboratory and power plant that's just never seen again. Whatever built these is no longer interested in maintaining them, and neither are the locals. It's a lot like how infrastructure crumbled after the Roman Empire's collapse.

>make it absurd and pulpy
I have zero experience with either of these(well, aside from absurd stakes.) That's probably why I keep fucking ruining my own stories.
I'm not even sure what pulpy even means. (Does making a Sonic the Hedgehog joke count? I did have plans for a Buizel that knows flight and a cocky Lucario to show up and attempt to assist.)

>the logic of the transformation
Eh I can understand it. Maybe I should just ditch all of this and go with your idea. The main reason I went this route to begin with(other than "artificial Pokemon need to exist due to human circumstance and not naturally") was because I wanted it to feel earned and this doesn't feel very earned to me.
I don't have much penciled in though, just a bunch of ideas that are hard for me to put together. This makes for a much easier path.

Thank you for the advice, it is pretty useful.

Guess we'll keep on keeping on, then.

Mostly existing tech, you reckon? I'll admit that makes it a little more intriguing. The way I interpret those places in Rescue Team is that they were built by humans - the same ones that introduced artificial Pokemon to the world Mystery Dungeon takes place in. But they died out at some point, leaving Pokemon alone to find their own way and build their own civilization. I wouldn't say their technology is declining (we see far more impressive cities in SMD as compared to the earlier games, suggesting that their civilization is progressing), but moreso that they're in the position of having to gradually re-invent everything humans once did. They were never at the humans' technology level in the first place, but might be some day - that's the premise of the Mystery Dungeon Moderne setting I've been working on.

Pulp fiction is things like Flash Gordon and golden age comic books. If you've ever read a gold or silver age comic book, you'll know they tend to be very over the top and silly, with big, flashy stakes and little regard for realism, but are also extremely sincere, albeit in the most cheesy, unsubtle way possible. They aren't eye-rollingly self-aware like MCU movies are - if anything they're almost defiantly un-self-aware. It's the full-throated embrace of big, dumb fun, basically. You do actually sound like you're on the right track with that Buizel and Lucario.

Whether you switch to my idea or not (worth noting that you don't need huge, world-ending stakes for character growth to feel earned. Their struggle, even if it's completely personal and internal, just has to feel heartfelt and genuine), know that you have my full support, and I'll continue to help out however I can. I've found I have a bit of a knack for latching onto interesting, eccentric people and aiding them in navigating hard times.

Can we cool it with the walls of redaction please.
>>
>>58418766
Yeah, sorry. This'll probably be the last bit for now, I'm just trying to keep things bumped and this conversation was interesting and helps me with story writing.

>PMD timeline
There's not really a definitive PMD timeline. The only two games to actually have a known connection are RT and EoX, which means that SPMD could absolutely be a prequel, or take place in an entirely different universe for all we know.

>Pulp fiction
I knew what pulp was, I just didn't know how to quantify pulpy.
I'll have to see what I can do with that. Maybe the duo can show up multiple times. It's very unlikely the government would hire them though. I didn't exactly plan the greatest pedigree with them.

>worth
Okay, in other circumstance, I would agree. However, we are talking about throwing in a legendary, in a thread where legendaries and mythicals are recommended against. The circumstances of their existence should be earned through an extraordinary feat that is far beyond impressive feats like finding yourself in this world when you're this lost, which is why I settled on this.
Again, it'd make total sense if this was, say, a Zebstrika or something, but it's not.
Still, your idea sounds a lot smoother to execute...

On a weird aside, cheesy means cheap or unpleasant, but it can also mean inauthentic, which is really ironic given what it's often used to describe.

>>58418988
Eh, "no" because MOST of it pertains to my own story and how I'm going to progress forward, which is very much a spoiler-y thing to discuss.
That said, I am more or less done though, unless something else comes up so you won't be seeing it for a bit anyways.

Gonna hit you with a truth bomb, here.
You are romanticizing the idea of writing a story instead of actually writing said story.
You clearly want to do this sci-fi, Red Alert 2 mind-control, geopolitical, legendary pokemon conflict thing. Nobody's stopping you; more stories are always welcome. But you gotta write, not take over the thread to world-build. It's a real left-field idea with no connection to "real life but suddenly pokemon" too.

You're doing this weird discussion thing where you're creating a setting completely and tonally separate from near every story in the thread. You're kinda but not really sussing out wacky world-building ideas while effectively namefagging with all the spoiler'd text, as >>58418988 points out. It's coming off as real weird, grandiose self-promotion even if you don't mean it to.
>>
>>58418988
Yeah, I'll cool it, sorry.

>>58419939
Actually no, SMD heavily references the earlier games. Many of the characters you can get in the connection orb, such as Team ACT, are explicitly stated to be the same ones from previous games.

Well, ultimately you'll just have to see what you decide with regards to all this stuff. Keeping an eye out for ya like I said - definitely want to see you succeed. The duo don't have to be official, by the way - they could just be good Samaritans. If they are to be comic relief, use them appropriately - for moments where the 'relief' in 'comic relief' is actually needed.

For what it's worth, I'm just trying to help the guy. I'd really rather be PMing him on Discord, but, y'know, it's 4chan - we're still trying to pretend that anonymity actually exists on today's internet, so we have this admitted inelegance instead.

>>58420157
That's also good advice.
I'm fucking retard. I apologize, I won't do this again.
>>
>>58420222
Eh, you've got a better picture of what your options are now. Much as it's better to avoid being annoying where you can, that's still valuable.
