The game has a lot of Rouge Mega battles between then and the F-Rank fight to those thankfully pad those out.

if they were really that desperate for a jump they should have had a section of the story where you're in a battle royale with a bunch of rank trainers at once and beating them all gives you a huge rank jump

I'm not that surprised you skip ranks, I was skeptical Game freak would actually put it in that many battles when they announced the ranking system. But was there nothing plot related going on when it happens? The game just says you can skip to F now? I thought they'd at least give some kind of terrible explanation like they all the trainers got jumped by one of those wild Megas and are all incapacitated.

The explanation is that the protagonist is pretty good at dealing with rogue megas (the tournament is to recruit trainers good enough to deal with them) so they expedite your promotion. I think that's it.
