A problem I’m noticing with Megas is some are designed as temporary power-ups, while some are designed as basically an evolution, and the two philosophies clash.
The temporary power-ups (Victreebel, Sableye, Pyroar, Slowbro, etc.) look a bit silly, but in the context that they’re just overflowing with energy and only in this form for a short while it’s understandable.
The basically evos (Lucario, Blastoise, Malamar, Chesnaught, etc.) are a lot less divisive, and by comparison, make the temporary power-up designs look bad.
Excadrill’s Mega more sense as a temporary power-up, with it gaining giant claws/a giant drill for a couple of big attacks, which makes it look bad when just giving it slightly bigger drill parts (and maybe the grooves) would’ve looked better and more neutral.

I really wonder what the design philosophy behind megas are. I personally never was a fan of them, but this round feels so random. The designs are all over the place. You have things like Eelektross and Malamar that get such big design chances, but then you have Starmie who just has longer legs and nothing else. And then the starters are just like somewhere in between, where the base design is kept pretty similar and just some extra elements are added. Oh, and also some designs have callbacks to the pre-evos but others don't. Not sure if they just want megas to be crazy and unpredictable and they just go with whatever.

the problem is that megas clearly have a bunch of different artists behind them the same way regular pokemon do. the same was true for gen 6, as well, but it was a lower number of designers and the leadership still had people like sugimori and masuda that in all likelihood had a clearer picture of what the concept was supposed to embody
but a new species can get away with deviating from the standard design philosophy, and a regional is comparatively limited in how much it can branch off of the base design on top of not strictly replacing the original design. if the people designing the megas (and to a lesser extent evolutions) all have different philosophies behind what a mega is or should be and are given a lot of creative freedom, it's inevitably going to create inconsistencies as you end up with a bunch of different designs embodying completely different understandings of the core idea of mega evolution

mega blastoise has the oversized cannon and the shell arms that border on goofy, but they're offset by its change in stature and smaller tweaks to its design that give it a more fierce expression and sharper details all throughout its body. this still lets it have a bit of personality without feeling like it's reduced to a punchline
compare this to excadrill where not only does it now have cartoonishly long drill bits, but its nose was made noticeably bigger, its face was outright dragged further down its neck, it has random metal shapes sitting loosely on its body, and its arms are reduced to thin noodles that are awkwardly squeezed into its drills instead of remaining as the natural-looking claws seen in the base design

nothing wrong with liking the newer megas, but a lot of them absolutely do not have the same design philosophy as the original set

The key is there are lot more funny goofy designs. I think that's a very Japanese mindset. The older designs feel more western in influence. They're almost all trying to be cool. Anyway I really love Mega Clefable.
