However, as time has gone on and the franchise has evolved, it's become clear that having the disconnect between the design used for the majority of Pikachu's depictions in merchandise, PR media etc and the games needed to be dealt with. In other words, the current one didn't have early-installment weirdness, but as time marches on and what was once new becomes old, it has become early-installment weirdness. Also the now previous-gen design is still very old, having been done early in the anime's lifecycle (shortly after phasing out the lumpy atrocity that is Fatchu for good).What is new one day will eventually become early installment weirdness infested oldslop.
