>gold and silver came out 25 years ago todaydid you play them when they came out? do you have any fond memories from them?my parents bought me silver for christmas that year and i was instantly in love. they bought me red for christmas two years prior and the idea of a new pokemon game with whole new pokemon was very exciting. gen ii is an incredibly nostalgic generation for me.
These games are older than every single person genwarring about them here.
>>58423951No games since then captured that rugged, down to earth feel GS had. Everything's too clean and rounded since FRLG, HGSS painfully so.
>>58423951>gold and silver>includes crystal who didnt appear until after g/s
>>58423969I am 21, but this doesn't take away from the fact that Johto is dogshit.
>>58423951Yes I did. I remember it, it was so much fun playing it and seeing it in color too, but I prefer Red so much more.

Back in third grade, Pokémon Gold was everything. It was the kind of game that made you forget to eat lunch, get in trouble for sneaking your Game Boy into class, and dream in 8-bit pixels. I had the purple translucent Game Boy Color — the coolest one, obviously — and I treated it like it was made of glass and dreams. One day during indoor recess (it was raining — it was always raining), I was crouched in the corner of the classroom behind the bookshelf with my best friend Marcus. He had Pokémon Silver. We were both convinced that version exclusives made you smarter somehow.I had just made it to the Lake of Rage. Marcus was hyping it up, telling me, “There’s a red Gyarados there, I swear.” I didn’t believe him. I thought he was trying to trick me into wasting my Master Ball like he did when he told me you could catch Ho-Oh on Route 30. I wasn’t falling for that twice. But I biked around the lake anyway. Then it happened. That music hit — the wild battle theme — and there it was. A SHINY RED GYARADOS. My heart actually skipped. My palms were sweaty (yes, mom’s spaghetti, etc.), and Marcus was screaming next to me like we’d just won the lottery. Now, here's where it gets tragic.I didn’t throw the Master Ball. I was saving it for something "more legendary." I tried to weaken it with my level 34 Ampharos, but I forgot to turn off Critical Hit Mode in my brain — and the ThunderPunch hit harder than a vending machine after it eats your dollar. The Gyarados fainted. There was a full 10 seconds of silence. Even Marcus just stared at me. The rain outside got louder.“Why didn’t you use the Master Ball?” he whispered, as if I’d broken some sacred code.I turned off the Game Boy without saving and stared into the middle distance like a war veteran. I didn’t speak for the rest of indoor recess.I never did go back and catch it again in that save file. It became legend. The one that got away.
>>58424209This unlocked a core memory I didn’t even know I had.I did the EXACT SAME THING with that Red Gyarados in 3rd grade. I was on a family road trip, playing Pokémon Gold in the backseat with the light from a McDonald’s parking lot because my parents wouldn’t let me turn on the dome light. I finally found the shiny, panicked, and accidentally used Spark with my Raichu. One-shot. I legit stared at the screen for 5 minutes like I had just lost a loved one.Didn’t save. Never saw it again.Glad to know I wasn’t the only one who took an emotional L that day.
>>58423981>proving the pointKEK
>>58423951man, i was such a spoiled little shit and made my parents buy me both of them.
In 2nd grade, I traded my stack of rare Yu-Gi-Oh! cards and five bucks to a 5th grader on the bus for a beat-up copy of Pokémon Crystal with someone else’s save file still on it. I didn’t care — the cartridge was blue, it sparkled in the sunlight, and it felt like owning a piece of treasure. That night, I sat cross-legged in my room naming my Totodile “CHOMP” and feeling like the coolest kid in the universe.
I played Silver and I got obsessed over the games. I still remember I had a save file in Crystal with 243 mons, that Scizor I raised up with 350 attack. I didn't really understand the difference between physical and special attacks, so I just ran a bunch of coverage. I ran Metal Claw over Steel Wing because it sounded cooler, Fury Cutter, Hidden Power Psychic, I wish I remembered the last move. I didn't have Pokemon Stadium 2 but my friend did, and sometimes we'd trade using that or battle. I treated that game like its own world, I liked getting phone calls from trainers, checking the radio out, just looking for Pokemon. Hell, I still remember how much I struggled to catch a Chansey once I found out where it was, and I remember when the dupe glitch rumors spread at the day care and I used that too.
>>58423951I’m 31. I’ll never forget the day my dad came home with my teal game boy color and pokemon gold. I was 6 about to leave for school when he rushed inside the house and put in the game and showed it to me. I will never forget those raw emotions. I grew up on Pokemon. I still play Pokemon. I have three sons of my own and we all play Pokemon together. I really hope my kids have these core memories and can remember them when they’re older.
>>58423951i was 10 and had already been into pokemon for a year with the cards and anime then got silver as my first game so very nostalgic. put over 100 hours into it. got red a year later and loved it just as much.
>>58423951Happy Birthday G/S! Gold was actually my first ever played Pokemon game, good times. Still love it. I hope they will re-release them on Switch someday.
I had crystal when it came out, was my first ever video game + gameboy advance, it was alright
>>58423951>First Pokémon game was a hand-me-down GBC and Pokémon Gold.>Loved JohtoPeak game.
>>58423951This was the height of pokemon. All down hill from here. Except Arceus.
>>58423951These games were peak and were the last true Pokemon game where it was truly YOUR story and you weren't some "chosen one" wunderkind commanding the physical embodiment of the earth/the sea/space/time/truth/ideals/life/death/ect. The emphasis was on exploring a fun fantasy world, not becoming a plot driven hero solving some world ending crisis by shoving a demigod in a ball. HG/SS actually undoes this with changes to the Kimono Girl and Togepi storyline, which is dumb and lame. Still good games, but an unnecessary change. The only real gripe with gen 2 was the selection of Pokemon available in Johto. The new Pokemon should have been front and center. Murkrow should have been in Ilex Forest and Larvitar should have been in the back of Mt. Mortar, for example. I grew up with a Game Shark though, so I never really had this problem but having so many new Pokemon available only after you fight the Elite 4 is dumb.
>>58427639>The emphasis was on exploring a fun fantasy worldThis was the aspect that continues to draw me to the early games. Finding the legendaries feels more like finding and proving Bigfoot exists and crushing your neighbor with jt for shits and giggles, and not like I've managed to wrestle God into a dog collar.> Pokemon should have been front and centerThis, I hacked one of my games to let me "find" a lv. 4 Larvitar in Mt Mortar, cloned it and send to new files once I get to Violet City, and the game improves considerably. I'll probably add Houndour and Murkrow to the list, rotate the selection like starters for my runs.
>>58427873>Finding the legendaries feels more like finding and proving Bigfoot existsThis is how they handled the bird trio and Mewtwo in gen 1 and it was perfect. Your only hints to the birds were a passing comment after defeating some random bird keeper, looking into the binoculars outside of Fuschia and an email on a Cinnabar PC, all of which could be easily missed. The only hints you got for Mewtwo were the diary entries but that was it. You weren't just led to it and told "ok, catch it". There was no doomsday plot surrounding it and it wasn't "choosing you as it's partner". It was just some freak in a cave that you could use to demolish your friends.
>>58423951>25th anniversary of one of the most beloved gens>tens of millions of buckaroos just waiting to be made from nostalgia filled millennials>all we get is [pic related]Pokemon is run by complete morons.
>>58427639>where it was truly YOUR story and you weren't some "chosen one" wunderkind commanding the physical embodiment of the earth/the sea/space/time/truth/ideals/life/death/ect.You were literally chosen by Ho-oh or Lugia respectively and in Crystal Suicune chooses you. You are not a chosen one in Hoenn, you just happen to have the orb that you stole from the evil team to quell them. You are not a chosen one in Sinnoh either. You ARE a chosen one in Unova and you clash with another chosen one there. You are not a chosen one in XY either. You are not a chosen one in Sun and Moon either. You ARE a chosen one in Sword and Shield. You are not a chosen one in Scarlet and Violet either.Where did this "chosen one" narrative come from? Have you touched any of those games at all?
>>58427639I agree with the Pokemon distribution issue but I've learned to accept Gen 2 as an expansion to 1 and not a replacement.Makes the distribution make sense.
>>58428441>he's an HGSS zoomerew. The games are great but the padded storyline and handholding is everyone's biggest gripe compared to the originals.BW were the only games where chosen-one-itis is acceptable, for literal plot reasons.
>>58428441>literally chosen by Ho-oh or Lugia respectivelyYeah, in the remakes which I said was dumb. In gen 2 they just show up in their respective locations if you have a rainbow/silver wing in your inventory and don't appear if you don't. That's it. They have absolutely zero plot relevance and can be skipped entirely. You only know where to go get them if you walk around and learn about them. They're a reward for exploration. I'll accept Suicune in Crystal, that's dumb.
The games released later in the UK, but I was visiting family in NZ for Christmas the year Pokemon G/S came out. You have no idea how cool I felt coming back home and showing off my present, Pokemon Silver, to my friends who were still stuck with RBY.
>>58423951Playable on Nintendo online when?
>>58428441>You are not a chosen one in Hoenn, you (a rookie trainer with no experience) just so happen to quell and command the ancient and legendary physical embodiment of the land/sea>You are not a chosen one in Sinnoh, you (a rookie trainer with no experience) just so happen to quell and command the ancient and legendary physical embodiment of time/spaceAnd so on for the rest.
I sold japanese copies of Silver on floppy disks at school for £5.Nobody could work out how to get last the Sudowoodo.
>>58428680I think I'd like Hoenn 50% more if it were the only installment to pull that shit. I liked Sinnoh's vibe, setting, mechanics etc more but the plot just made me look back to the prior generatipnd and scrutinize the legendary plot pattern that had started.
>>58428571>>58428731>>58425297>>58424368I love hearing these stories. They're so normal but this kind of hype just doesn't exist anymore, since everyone bandwagons immediately and then abandons it a week later for the new craze of the week.
I'm 30 and remember vividly, that a lot of the kids who couldn't afford them tried to steal others copies. Peak Pokémania, although I remember gen 3 more fondly because of the increased connectivity through Secret Bases and Colosseum just being the most kino shit of the franchise
>>58428741The Hoenn and Sinnoh games at least had the spirit of exploration still within them even if the plot started to get lame. There was quite a lot you could explore off the beaten path and the path around the world itself took plenty of twists and turns. Gen 5 started the "straight line" region trend.
>>58423951>I'm getting old.
it's a shame gamefreak doesn't give a shit about johto
>>58427639The johto pokemon were hidden because they were new and elusive. My god the ads even pointed this out.
>>58423969Zoomer demons can do everything they can to downplay these games, but nothing will change the fact that was the best GBC game ever made alongside the Zelda entries.
>>58429328>The johto pokemon were hidden because they were new and elusiveYou can do that while still making them actually show up to players. Pokemon like Dunsparse and Yanma were "new and elusive" but at least showed up in their home region as swarms. Pokemon like Murkrow, Larvitar, Sneasel, Houndour, Slugma and Misdreavus shoudn't be in Kanto at all, they should be spread around Johto. It's not like there aren't places they could realistically be found.
I'm Paldean and I clearly remember how the first episode of Digimon 02 aired the 2nd April for us and then Gold/Silver came out just a few days later, on the 6th April. We weren't able to find the game that same day, and since it was a Friday, I thought we'd have to wait until Monday to try again. My mom actually went to look for it again on Saturday without letting me know and was able to find it and give me the most amazing surprise a 10 year old can experience. Love you, mom.
>>58424209>and dream in 8-bit pixels.>made of glass and dreams.>—>Now, here's where it gets tragic. >harder than a vending machine after it eats your dollar.Hey "anon," is there a seahorse emoji?
>>58423951For a while I only had yellow. Then I saw a kid playing Silver version on the bus and I was like dude no way. Good times
>>58423951>did you play them when they came out? Nope. Not later, either.Closest I ever got was HeartGold.>do you have any fond memories from them?A related memory. An older kid at my church had just gotten a new Game Boy Color and a Gen 2 game, and was encouraged by his parents to donate his old Game Boy Pocket and Gen 1 game to me. Since he had moved on to the new game, rather than just ignoring and wasting the old one, they told him that it would be "the charitable, Christian thing to do" to give it away. And that's how I got into playing Pokémon.
>>58427639Hit the nail on the head buddy>>58428441You're completely missing the point. You don't have to be specifically told that you are the chosen one, plotwise, in order for you to still be "the chosen one". The fact of the matter is, that ever since gen 3, you've been able to make litteral Kaijus and gods your pet on a leash as a 10 year old just starting their journey
>>58423951the only gens that matter are the jap ones. pure, unfiltered vision. and no shitty gimmicks>megASS>z-movecrap>dynashit>terashit>defeatist>zen mode>power cuckstruct>schooling
>>58423951My first experience with them was a Japanese copy a girl had in school. She had a Slowking just Surfing everything and I was astounded Slowpoke got another evolution.
>>58423981I am more than a decade older than you and you're correct.
>>58424209kek
>>58424209What a beautiful story. I cried when Marcus fondled your balls. That's what being a Johtochad is all about.
>>58429982It's also a lie; you get the Master Ball from Elm after you defeat Clair. He wouldn't have one before the red Gyarados.
>>58430011>implying marcus didn't trade him one out of sheer love for his best friendsoulless
My dad was in the Navy and was stationed in Japan before GS came out in the US, and I had no idea there were new Pokémon coming out. I knew about the ones missing from the Kanto Pokédex you see in the show and movies (Togepi from the show, Marill (or Pikablu as everyone thought it was called early on), Snubbull and Donphan from the beginning of the first movie) but the idea of a whole new dex full of Pokemon was entirely out of the question. My dad came home from Japan and brought me a promo folder with the Johto starter evolution cards in Japanese and I couldn’t believe it. Nine whole new Pokemon was just totally unheard of, I’d bring that folder to school and we’d all sit around looking at them wonder what they were called. This was 1999, was 7 then. Then the next year GS came out and there were those starters my friends and I had been obsessing over and we finally had names for them. Gold and Silver were incredibly special games for me when I was a kid, Crystal too when it came out. Gen III lost that same spark, and no generation of games have hit me the hardest as Gen II. Gen I was also incredibly special because they were first but then Gen II kicked it up a notch because as a kid you’re removed from the world of know what’s going to be released or whatever and then suddenly seemingly out of the blue there’s a whole new Pokemon game with 100 whole new Pokemon. Nothing has captured that excitement in the world of Pokemon since.
>>58430055We should all be more like Marcus. Give your friends free stuff in exchange for jerking their penis. #belikemarcus
>>58430181Oh shit I had that promo folder too. One of my friends had a magazine with spoilers from Japan that included the names of all the new gen 2 pokemon (JP names, but written in english) so we at least knew about them but it was still really cool. No clue where I've put that folder but I definitely didn't throw it away.
>>58423951i remember being absolutely stuck on ice cave somehow and needing to call my friend in elementary school to help me get through it on the phonei think he was super annoyed but didn't know how to tell me or i wasn't receptive of itwe were weird kids
>>58430181>>58430368This one? If so that makes 3 of us that have it. Got it at some mall vendor who sold japanese stuff if I recall.
>>58430914That's the one!
I remember playing Silver back in the day. I already knew about the Red Gyarados, but didn't know shiny pokemon were a thing. I was south of Goldenrod looking for Raikou when I found a Ratatta that had the same sparkle effect as the Red Gyarados. I thought it was a super rare glitch, so I caught it.
I remember having just beat the Elite 4 and challenging my brother to a battle using the link cable. He pulled up with a lvl 100 Typhlosion and a lvl 85 Golduck that knew Dig. I was so mad.
I genuinely can't tell which of these gay childhood stories are AI or not.
>>58431668Genwartards are so full of blind hate that they can't comprehend that people are capable of having genuinely good childhood memories about Pokemon, how sad.
>>58431674@grok did you write this?
>>58424209Marcus is a better friend than 95% of /vp/
my grandma bought me a copy of gold and I was so obsessed with it my parents had to hide my gameboy in their closet (which I found). It was my first pokemon and my first starter was cyndaquil. I'll never forget going to kanto and finding red for the first time. Also I got stuck forever in Goldenrod bc I couldn't figure out how to get past the sudowudo.
lmao you faggots were so retarded
Did anyone have access to the internet back then? My grandparents somehow did so I'd always check pokemon.com whenever I went over to visit. I remember being so excited for gen 2.If anyone is interested, here's the website the day G/S launched in North America. G/S is still listed as a "future game" because nobody used the internet back and updates were slow.https://web.archive.org/web/20001016195351/http://pokemon.com/
>>58432093No wonder we got bullied for liking Pokemon. This shit is gay and infantilizing as fuck.
>>58428392I would've bought some of this if it didn't release while I was in the process of trying to move :^/
When I first saw this guy in the manual, I thought it was a Mr. Mime evolution with added fire typing. I don't know why. I went into the game just about completely blind. I miss when you could do that.
>>58428392All of this sold out in a day and is being scalped on mercari for 5x the price and the 35 year old manchildren here will buy it all up.
