>>58430083Listen up, Pokémon fans. Please read this post. It is very important and very topical. There once was a game called Dead Space, a minor title published by EA and developed in 2008 by a studio named Visceral (which is now closed), with a team that was 1/10 the size of the one that made Legends ZA. In this game, there is a 40 seconds sequence where the player is dragged by the leg and puleld by an alien, then the player has to manipulate their gun with one hand. The issue was: the game had 20+ guns and not a single animation to operating them all with one hand. The easy way out for Visceral was to ignore the gun the player was carrying, and just have him shoot at the alien with a random pistol. They DID NOT take the easy way out. They proceeded to animate the 20+ guns available in the game for that one particular 40 seconds sequence. That costed them at least a hundred thousand dollars and took them unreal amount of time and effort. They had to remake all gun animations from zero for that 40 seconds sequence.Visceral got best game prize that year for Dead Space. However, due to unsatisfying sales in future titles, the studio eventually went bankrupt and this award-winning team disbanded. Meanwhile your utter shit untalented lazy hacks at Gamefreak can't be bothered to program the inside of a building or a single ladder animation for their 30 secs sequence.Because of this one scene in ZA, I refuse to ever spend a single cent of my money on anything by Gamefreak and anything related to Pokémon ever again, or even give it any attention like viewership to their promoters and related articles.I am out. I am done with this franchise. I hope it burns.Source: https://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2019/01/08/dead-space-drag-tentacle-story/
>>58432011lol
>>58431678>now
>>58432011Keep in mind: animations in this were made with assistance of a motion captioning team, so the actors also had to participate in the animation and had to film individual animations for each of the 20+ guns, which then had to be use as basis for the digital animations that'd play out in that 40 seconds scene.Players would never even notice, but the devs forced themselves to remake their entire shooting animations and mechanics for the sake of a 40 seconds sequence.Imagine this level of dedication. By doing this alone, they proved that they cared more for that 40 seconds sequence in their game than Gamefreak ever did. Also, it was made with inferior technology for inferior hardware. This entire scene is considered one of the most admirable feats in the history of game design, and a true demonstration of what dev integrity and dedication consists of.There is an entire documentary dedicated to this 40 seconds sequence:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ3iqq49Ew8Just imagine this for a moment. This is a love for a project by the devs that must be alien to Pokémon fans.

>>58432085Is there a single part of any Pokemon game in the past decade where it's apparent they went above and beyond in some small way, rather than cutting corners in the most blatant and annoying way?
>>58432129I'd say Delta Episode but that just passed the decade mark.
>>58432011I mean that's cool and all, but realistically this was a massive waste of time and effort that most major studios would never had allowed to be done-you know that right? I'm not defending hover hands over here but stuff like this is an outlier for a reason, even if the game is critically acclaimed and the studio has millions to spend. In most work environments the senior producer would've smacked the director on the head with their ledger and told them to either find a workaround or find another scene to put in it's place.
>>58432129>>58432085>>58432175>Is there a single part of any Pokemon game in the past decade where it's apparent they went above and beyond in some small wayI think the dexcut sealed it as the ultimate cut corner. But for me, the only thing that Pokémon sometimes will try to make is the obligatory unique attack move for one Pokémon (which is not there for Legends ZA, curiously). Per example, Cinderace has an unique attack where she kicks a ball. If you consider shiny Cinderace, that unique animation had to at least be re-coloured. I think the unique attack of Cinderace is the closest thing Pokémon has ever gotten to the Dead Space sequence, except that unique attack can be repeated endless times and is very simple. There is nothing on the scale of Dead Space. As seen in Legends ZA, the devs didn't even bother to put a ladder there or add a building with an elevator. Instead, they just piled up a bunch of human models with the standard arms up stance (they have no motion captioning or any form of complex animation that'd enable more complex expressions and postures of the characters).Pokémon won't even bother have shops be enterable and navigable, which they had in their games back in 1993.I do not understand this. Why do they develop Pokémon if they hate it so much? Look at the love that went in the Stadium games. Stadium games are Pokémania incarnate. Not a single Gamefreak game ever matched that level of love and dedication.
>>58432219>they have no motion captioning or any form of complex animation that'd enable more complex expressions and postures of the charactersGame Freak revealed that motion capture was part of Creatures' animation workflow years ago, and it's blatantly obvious with most of the in-engine lip-flapping cutscenes that make people whine about voice acting. You sure don't seem knowledgeable for a subject you're writing several paragraphs about.
>>58432197Here is the thing. The director knew it was extravagant ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ3iqq49Ew8 ) and in the end, the work put in that sequence ended up costing them two other planned sequences, but they had made their studio with the goal of doing their best and respecting player choice. So they had drag animations, reloading animations, gun animations, shooting mechanics, everything had to be re-done for a 40 seconds sequence. Then, it was not useful anymore. It ended up being one of the greatest segments of the game and an industry example.LarianStudios will have unique animations and lyrics for songs composed with assistance of players. The same goes to Cyberpunk, where the guitarrists seen in the game are really playing the music that they play, note by note. Even in Expedition 33, also designed by a small indie team, they did it (albeit, they only had three songs and every character playing the guitar did the same animations).
>>58432011Dead space 1 has 7 weapons, not 20+.
>>58432248Then Creatures is full of shit, because there are zero signs of motion capture in any animation of Pokémon. Compare it to Monster Hunter:https://youtu.be/o2ZoThIkV8A?t=94
>>58432258I mean, I get that. You don't need to reiterate-despite what I said I'll fully admit that the work put into something that most players wouldn't really regard in a few hours time for the sake of immersion is admirable as fuck-and, again, the hover hands look bad. But also, like, using it as an example isn't the best because it's a unique product of its circumstances and having even a single different person in any position of power would've completely axed it. In most places needing to scrap two whole planned scene for the sake of one that doesn't even break 60 seconds would never fly-heck, it could be argued that it WASN'T worth the tradeoff from a certain perspective. The lack of time and polish GF's games have had for the finer details is worth admonishing, but your counterexample borders on being excessively hyperbolic.
>>58432129Honestly my first instinctual reaction was USUM's Ultra Spaces, but those were just hallways. Some very pretty hallways more visually ambitious than what Pokemon's put out since but still just hallways.
>>58432011Damn maybe they should've made a fun game and not Game Awards bait
>>58432011lmao who cares about some dead space game nobody played. pokemon sells millions and makes billions so theyre obviously doing something right. if you dont like it dont buy it but stop crying about animations in a kids game

>>58432328>counterexample borders on being excessively hyperbolicDoes it, really? I just can't find a single aspect of this entire franchise that has felt particularly refined, or a proof of passion from those developing it. Whether the 40-seconds scene was worth or not under the lenses of game direction and resource management, it is not relevant. A more worthy discussion is what is this flame that compels developers to go further beyond and try to achieve legitimate greatness, even if their efforts are assured to be thankless? They:>gutted the Battle Frontier because too few people engaged with it (you'd call it an excess as well)>gutted the National Dex forever because they were concerned about 'animation quality' (you'd call it an excess as well)>could not be bothered with enterable buildings (you'd call it an unecessary excess as well)>cannot be bothered with unique clothing for male and female characters (you'd call it unecessary as well, or resort to american politics to explain why this japanese game cannot acknowledge that men and women exist)>gutted contests, Pokémon Studios, mini-games, pokémon following the player (fan favorite feature), and all sorts of features>they had bycicles go over water >still repeating Sun/Moon Hop animations for their characters, near 10 years later — and you'd defend it, call it a waste of resourcesThere is a point where you are not directing a game anymore, just cutting costs. Pokémon has gone over that. Gone are the days where they had bug catching contests, the Pokéathlon and even the Saffari zone. They claim to focus on the core mechanic of battling. How good that has been so far? Stadium was excellent for battling while having fantastic mini-games, puzzle battles, and all sorts of unecessary features.I want hypebolia. A 70 billion dollars franchise, for fuck's sake, deserves a game worth of the value of its IP.This human ladder is a fucking disgrace and you know it. You know it.
>>58432197I bet you are one of those "AI is here to stay so you shouldn't resist it" types.
>>58432011>Imagine breaking that hard because PokemonThey got what they deserved, next time they should try to make a fun game instead of wasting time feeding their egos.
>>58432129Heartgold & Soulsilver had tons of unecessary extravaganza that proved that Gamefreak can go above and beyond and offer extra content that few players even engaged with.Remember the Pokéathlon, bug catching contests, Pokéball making mechanics, the radio tower with all the unique interviews, the various radio frequencies, the enlarged segments to enhance exploration, and so on. X/Y added interesting features to help players communicate with one another, and easier EV training. And now everything that was done is abandoned. This franchise hasn't tried doing anything besides the core experience of cutscene to pokémon battle to cutscene (the essence of Pokémon, everything else is unecessary).Gamefreak needs to be purged.
>>58432441>They claim to focus on the core mechanic of battling. And that's a lie too since up until now, it had barely changed since 1996. And even with ZA, they didn't put any thought into changing it, they just swapped the old system out for the kind of combat you'd expect to find in a Chinese scam mobile game. It's poorly designed and not fun to play. I suspect they did this just to throw their hands up and say "we tried something different, but you didn't like it" and go back to the slow primitive DQ1-level combat forever.
>>58432441Surely you can see the difference between cutting optional content that builds upon the basic mechanics and one of the main draws of the franchise and potentially cutting a single scene that requires an inordinate amount of work and funding, right? These are pretty false equivalences outside of reusing animations point.Though, to respond to one of the points I'd say is reasonable>could not be bothered with enterable buildings (you'd call it an unecessary excess as well)I'm bothered by interiors being cut because it removes flavor from the world and they very likely didn't cost much to begin with, so I think they should've just scaled down the amount you can enter. That said, realistically it was one or two rooms copy and pasted several times over in a single town/city and NPCs who had a single, unmemorable line of dialogue and nothing else. Wyndon in SwSh was not made better by having a dozen repeated house interiors, only one of which actually had anything of value (the NPC that gives you the Rotom Catalog iirc) and probably should've been marked as such so players didn't skip over it after the first half a dozen houses had jack shit. >Gone are the days where they had bug catching contests, the Pokéathlon and even the Saffari zonePokemon still has in-depth minigames and distractions like this, even if they're marred by the issues plaguing the rest of the game. Hell, going off of SV, what I'd consider to be the absolute nadir for quality control in this franchise, Olive Roll, Glaseado Slide, and that rhythm minigame the Psychic GL makes you do all have multiple levels with varying rewards you can do in the postgame, and I'd bet actual money that those took more effort to develop than the Bug Catching contest or the Safari Zone individually, let alone collectively (Pokeathlon was really great, though). Sandwich making is literally so in-depth that the entire Shiny Hunting scene of the game revolves around it.
>>58432502It is so shameful that they are charging people 70 dollars for what is essentially a live service game without any side content. This game is mediocre even when compared with their own franchise.>game consists in traditional 'cutscene -> battling / catching -> cutscene' and repeat until you are the champion>exploration is barebones, they didn't even bother with different biomes. Remember Black and White had 3 models for every wilderness map to account for the change of seasons? And that the map layouts changed? Or when they had weather mechanics for two legendary Pokémon? There is nothing to do. They say it was all sacrificed for a combat that is worse, I'll say it, than Palworld. In their defense, they added 'sneak attack' and a crouch button. That is fucking it. That is all that this game brought to the table, you can choose to sneak attack and get a free first hit, further trivializing the speed stat and objectively making combat dumber and decreasing the importance of team-building.This game is the greatest botch in the history of this franchise. They need to be offering reimbursements just like Cyberpunk 2077. Cyberpunk 2077 at release was more worth its cost than whatever this nightmare is.Jesus Christ.
>>58432556>you can choose to sneak attack and get a free first hitSomething that practically every other JRPG had already done years ago.
>>58432620Something that doesn't work in this game.
>>58431915But you're not embarrassed to spend your free time seething over the series for years online...? Your time is worth less than $70?
>>58433307I have no friends, no wife and no kids.Who cares. I could have a stroke this very night. No, I do not value my time. My best years are already behind me.But if I die, I will die a man who has loved Pokémon and had his heart broken a million times. Pokémon affected me as a person, even. It taught me to have as little expectations as possible. I was there buying Pokémon Red in the 90s, and ZA is the first game I will not buy. I still have a functioning cartridge of Silver with my starter Feraligatr and the rest of my team. have ignored the overwhelming downward thrust in quality that this franchise has taken after Black / White. Hell, the downward thrust in quality that has happened since it peaked back in Stadium 1 / 2 and Pokémon XD Gale of Darkness.Pokémon has sincerely taught me to not expect the extraordinary. Everything that sounds 'too good' or a 'dream come true', I immediately disregard it as something that won't happen. Hell, Pokémon made me an atheist, since it has taught me to doubt that anything extraordinary can exist. I have the biggest love / hate relationship imaginable with it.So when I see the sad state that this franchise is now and how I reckon that it has never stooped so low before, I must talk to someone.
>>58433275Yeah, enemies have too low HP so an advantaged strike is usually just a kill or enough for the second hit to kill.

>>58435319Visceral was too good for EA. A studio with a bunch of traditional american and canadian men in their early 30s. They came to the industry, made excellent games in their first tries, then left. All because they mixed in very dedicated developers, excellent engineers and very creative people.Naturally, EA had no idea what to do with it and disbanded them. Their studio was also very uncharacteristic of modern gaming, where the devs are just some millenials and mostly from Asia. There was also no politics in their hiring procedure or their games.Visceral's games felt like lightning in a bottle.

>>58437858X/Y was decent, so was Omega Ruby / Saphire (where the cracks had begun to show).Everything made after, going from the Alola games to ZA, was a slippery slope in quality. They were still trying to make a good experience in X/Y, even if the problems had already begun and the transition to 3D severely limited them and made the presentation of the game less sophisticated rather than more.I think the decline was more evident in the Omega Ruby / Saphire remakes, where the amount of effort was abysmally lesser than the immense amount of work put in Heartgold & Soulsilver. The lack of Battle Frontier shed a somber prognostic for what Pokémon would become, since they had begun gutting the game from side-content,
>>58430083pokemon is meant to be an escape from the sadness of reality, but this game legitimately just made me more depressed I had to stop playing it like 15 hours inlike holy fuck man, whoever came up with the entire concept of this game needs to be executed
>>58439244Alola is the best post-Unova region yet.USUM were the last truly fleshed out Pokemon games in the series unfortunately, I'd consider that the peak of the series.Switch era is when it began the downhill turn, LGPE was promising because it seemed like they knew what they were doing with the art direction and such, then they just bombed with SWSH and it never recovered. They're blatantly not even TRYING to appease their fans anymore because they know they'll buy anything.
>>58438661It wasn't supposed to be a documentary!
>>58439481>LGPE was promisingI genuinely wonder what level of brain damage somebody has to have to think this. The board's reaction to LGPE's concept being leaked was that it was an April Fools' joke too exaggerated to be funny, and then depression and bewilderment when it was actually announced, and the only reason the board didn't descend into a pure pit of doomerism then was because Spaceworld leaked at the same time.
>>58430083ANDYOUBOUGHTITANYWAYS
>>58439525Seriously, I cannot understate how fucking negative the board's reaction to LGPE was. Hell, /vp/'s utter distaste for it is what inspired yawnfag's reign of contrarian trolling, because any defense of LGPE immediately got you dogpiled with dozens of replies of hatred, and like any troll he reveled in that shit and decided to keep it up for as long as he could. And he was extremely obvious at the time because almost nobody else was doing it, unlike now where the sharty orbits him like mongrel dogs around rotten meat.
>>58439607Why were people disappointed in LGPE?- Because Zelda Breath of the Wild was released more than a year before.People had seen that the Switch was capable of having a decent 3D adventure. Expectations were high, this was the first Pokémon game on the Switch. We wanted it to be the Mario 64 and the Ocarina of Time of Pokémon, their first true 3D game. And what we got was a cell-by-cell remake of Red/Blue, except far easier, babified, and with not near enough content to justify its price tag.The worst part? It is still the best Switch/Switch 2 game of Pokémon if you exclude Pokémon Snap 2 (made by people who understand Pokémon and basic ecology). Now we see that had this franchise gone the way of LGPE, it'd have been better.Z-A is a fucking trainwreck. I've spent more hours complaining about it than I've spent playing it. I just can't play this shit without being bored out of my mind. The game I was playing before it was Expedition 33 and the new Digimon. So I am very underwhelmed at every single aspect of this new Pokémon title. The lazy human ladder segment for me made me turn off the game, as well as the first time we "climb" to the rooftop, when the screen turns to white and Zygarde takes us to the roof. That is so shameful. If the Dead Space or Pokémon Stadium people were here, they'd have animated how each Pokémon could creatively make you climb a rooftop. And it'd have been fun and whimsical.Instead, the screen fades to white and we teleport. And then I regret having ever loved Pokémon.

They sell the worst possible product for the highest possible price to test capitalism, and that Gamefreak is just ahead of the curve of a general trend in all industries. This is necessary because inflation is picking up worldwide, costs of production are becoming higher, yet consumers are still not conditioned to accept buying in this unfriendly market. Pokémon is an 100 billion dollars IP, so it is used by the powers thereby to test the waters. This game is so mediocre it is sparking conspiracy about rapid material simplification. You are stuck in this 15 minutes city, can't go out at night, there is no entertainment, all buildings are the same modernist design to save costs and increase replaceable zones for home / business purposes.
