I feel like GameFreak made everything possible to sabotage their own game.
I love Mega Evolutions. And I've always wanted to try a Pokemon game set in a single big city.
But what were they thinking? Why did they replace the CLASSIC turn-based battles with this real-time slop?
And, as if that wasn't enough, they turned the MAIN POINT of this game (Mega Evolution) into some retarded TEMPORARY power-boost, instead of a full form change for the entire battle.
I can't help but think that PLA is the superior Legends game. It had a much bigger map (6 big maps, in fact) better art style, better setting, better premise, etc. All of this wouldn't have been the case IF Kazumasa Iwao (the director of USUM and PLA) had directed Z-A. Iwao's first game, USUM, was perfect, and his second game, PLA, was a breath of fresh air.
But they chose a literal who to direct Z-A. Like I said, it feels like they were actively trying to sabotage Z-A and I don't get it.

It's strange because the Johto prequel they proposed before switching to Kalos sounds like exactly what people would've wanted from a Legands Arceus sequel. But I guess they don't want to be limited to one era / gameplay style and have each game do whatever they want, for better or worse

I do kinda get why they chose modern Lumiose City over Ancient Johto. Ancient Johto would've been far too similar to Hisui maybe.

Like I said in the OP, I have always liked the idea of a Pokemon game based in a single big city, and Mega Evolution is my favorite gimmick. But they just ruined the execution.

They switched to Kalos because TPC demanded it, so that it aligns with the toys, new cards and anime.

>too similar to johto
sucks this is probably true, sinnoh and johto are both prob the most lore fueled regions so we wont see both

Nah, PLA was ass. Even ZA is better.

stopped reading, that's literally the only good thing on display here.

You'll see both in the MMO, which is currently called Project Seed. Game Freak must have thought that it was a better idea than separate Legends games for all the Japanese regions.

I will say that Legends Johto was meant to be about building the first league (and the Brass Tower story), so it would have had its own niche.

Shit taste, don't care about anything else you said

AHAHAHAHAHA

Nice joke

Yeah, and they were completely barren

People keep saying this yet there's no reason it would actually end up being true. Ignoring the fact that the culture is pretty different, a follow up never killed anyone. And they always could've set it in Johto further in the past like the samurai era, or maybe present Johto etc...

They probably just chose Kalos since they had the battle idea and wanted to practice making 3D open world cities. Simple as that. With their release schedule each game needs to be a meaningful learning experience for them so they can upskill employees for the next game the year after

Leaks literally just showed us that Game Freak has total creative control over their direction with the games and therefore franchise. As for the release cadence its unclear who sets that. But Lumiose Legends was GF's idea

I think this is a fantastic change. Now you can have multiple megas and use them strategically. Plus even my casual non gamer friend thought it was weird to have them only revert at the end of the battle. He thought it should be permanent upgrades like a 4th evolution, or only last a few turns.

hmmm. I understand the reasoning behind that, but I think it's flawed. by being afraid of doing two similar games, they're suffocating the potential for these concepts to grow and be refined. I liked PLA a lot, but in many ways it felt like a first draft game. I would have loved a game that took the foundations of Arceus and built them up into a fuller experience. instead they've just thrown away everything that I liked about the first Legends game, and in doing so have alienated the audience who liked Arceus for what it was and not just because it had Pokemon in the title.

I get the desire to innovate and try new things, but a lot of franchises never would have reached their heights if they tossed away their foundation every game instead of building upwards on it. some ideas need iteration to be fully realized, and it helps you build a core audience who desire a specific kind of experience. at the very least, if they're going to insist on every Legends game being an entirely new game concept, they need to give them larger budgets and longer development cycles. because if you're going to be building these games essentially from scratch each time, a couple years in dev and a few million dollars as we saw from the leaks just isn't going to cut it. we're just going to get a series of half baked conceptual pitches, that might promise potential but never live up to it. we can already see from the Legends Galar remake that it's probably going to have a completely new style of combat, so all this development of the real time combat system for ZA will never be touched again? it will never be refined and improved. we just get the first draft, and that's it.

err, pitch* I know it's not a remake

Yes, USUM is perfect. Cope harder :)

PLA really was lightning in a bottle.
Also it was where GF knew they had to actually try for this project given the shitty track record they had for the switch thus far.
ZA is still pretty fun though.
