you need to advance the plot until you unlock subquests, that's when they stop "handholding" you since plenty of the concepts were introduced by that point. More stuff unlocks as you advance the plot. The Battles start to get more fun when you get more moves and alphas start to spawn which will be your main filter for a while. I'm having a lot of fun. Picked up my copy today and I lost four hours to just playing the game without worrying about efficiency. Exploring the city, trying to cheese wins on a level 27 pidgeot, sneaking up to a teleporting abra without abusing saves, leveling up towards that eventual shiny charm, 100%ing wild areas, and destroying everything in the overworld my moves can interact with.

no. looking at legends arceus, it took months before the damage formula was actually reverse engineered from the game code. empirically determining it via maths and testing was done much earlier about 3 weeks after release and it more or less lined up with what was eventually reverse engineered
