Fast is good. Nobody wants to sit there for 40 turns seeing who hardens the most. Maybe boss encounters can get away with being longer, but only because they're the battle that equates to the culmination of your experience at that point, but anything that isn't pivotal to progression? Speed has nothing to do with it, they simply aren't engaging. It's just cycling through your attack moves over and over even if they don't have a type advantage, because with the way cool down works, even a not very effective move is a way to turn idle time into minimal damage.

ok hear me out on these changes to improve the normal turn-based combat which is fucking old and outdated>mons can have a fifth move that can only be activated once a gauge has been completely filled. the gauge partially fills by landing attacks or getting hit.>action timeline, so instead of moving back and forth mons with much higher speed than the opponent might be able to act twice in a row. heavy moves like hyper beam can eat up future turns so you don't get to move next turn. some moves can manipulate the timeline to give you a second action in the future or delay the opponents turn until later so they can't act now but can act twice later, etc.>status effects and different damage types have more synergy effects so hitting a character with a water move and then an electric move in the same turn increases damage>buffs and debuffs are more powerful but fade away after turns quicker instead of lasting the whole fight>terrain affects combat more heavily, mud makes you slower unless you have a flying or ground/rock mon, high altitudes with lots of wind boost flying moves, etc>enemy ai is made less deliberately stupid and high-tier opponents like gym leaders can use items like potions or status heal>trainer tactics which is a permanent swappable passive ability with a variety of different options that encourage creative playstyles and not just higher damage. you can only change your tactic out of combat. in battle it gives a small bonus similar to some held items but for all of your mons and represents a specific tactic used in battle. for example one might be fog tactics, which is that you train your mons to fight in fog and all of your mons have less bad accuracy than you normally would in foggy conditions, so now it becomes viable to use fog to obscure and make enemies more likely to miss but your own mons will hit.

ZA may move a bit too fast, but holy fuck do they need to update the main series. Text boxes for absolutely everything, each individual hit of a multi-hit move, stat increases, stat decreases, crits/super effective, status effects ITS SO FUCKING SLOW.The vast majority of that could literally just use a sound cue and a popup while an animation plays. I can't stand playing pokemon anymore it's just gotten worse about this with time.

Low cooldown attacks feel better. Loaded my pokemon up with powerful moves as they grew and now it feels like early game again with downtime in battle.
I think the lockdown system annoys me the most. If you are battling a Pokémon next to a pink crystal the lock on will go back-and-forth and back-and-forth. It is extremely annoying.
