Listen man, I'm sorry that Gamefreak decided to make a Mega that resonates with the aspect of Starmie being so determined to speak with humans, it grew its arms and legs as an attempt to talk with them. While also respecting the original design philosophy by making it more alien and people are simply having fun with it over whatever fanfic overly-edgey retarded design slop you had going in your head. But I guess you anti-Starmie fags lost the plot the moment we got his animations and dex entry because you can't just hide behind AI-recreations and ooc leaks.

>Pokemon has a reference to other media integrated into its design subtly enough that most people never even make the connection (even people familiar with the medium in question) and is always treated seriously as a creature design in its own right
>New form takes this subtle reference, makes it dominate the entire design to the point that it's impossible to miss even if you don't know exactly what's being referenced, and treats the entire thing as a gag while neglecting to add anything else to it
This is the opposite of good design actually, this is pure flanderization; a more nuanced and well thought out design boiled down to a one-note joke. Acting like there's any actual merit to it beyond that just makes you a pretentious dipshit. Just admit that it made you laugh and you like it because of that without trying to justify your reaction with "but it's actually clever!", because it genuinely isn't.

I think its clever because it harkens back on Starmie making communication with humans via dex entries and expanding on it by forcibly allowing itself to grow limbs to make that job easier. Its doing so while not making it overly designed for the sake of it. However I do agree that its not deep outside of this idea. But I assume the Ultra Man, Starman reference posting is more often than not irony, rather than it being a legitimate point towards its favor tbf.
>>
>>58453450
>I think its clever because it harkens back on Starmie making communication with humans via dex entries
Except that wasn't even a thing, at least not in any of the English dex entries, until Mega Starmie itself. If anything it outright contradicts the old ones, which imply Starmie tries to actively avoid communicating with humans.
>The center section is named the core. People think it is communicating when it glows in 7 colors. (Yellow)
>When away from human eyes, its core is said to glow mysteriously in seven colors. This Pokémon may have come from outer space. (Stadium)

Most people don't notice it because it's almost entirely absent from the mainline games. Besides it's name, 'Hitodeman' only really behaved like Ultraman in the anime and certain Stadium animations.
This Mega essentially is GF finally acknowleding the connection in the mainline games.

Isn’t it also based on Starro the Conqueror from DC ?

>>
>>58460143
I didn't think about that but there is a possibility. Dandadan had to take the Gomora reference out of the kaiju suit in S2. But it's still literally "discount Redking" so I'm not sure what Tsuburaya's issue was with it.
>>
>>58459968

>Liquidation
>Aqua Jet
>Zen Headbutt
>Waterfall
>>
>>58456250
>Most people don't notice it because it's almost entirely absent from the mainline games
You're proving the point in that post if you think the reference was never there. It was there from the very beginning, long before the anime or Stadium, but it was only used to inspire parts of the designs of Staryu and Starmie while still letting them be their own thing, not completely dominating the entire design like with Mega Starmie whose entire existence revolves around making the reference as unsubtle as possible.
>>
>>58460281
So you're complaining that a Mega Evolution, a transformation that takes an aspect of a Pokemon's design/lore to the extreme, took the Ultraman aspect that was always there and ran with it?
>>
>>58455296
I wish it was Lokix in this fanart instead of the Eva units.

He was based on that exact Kamen Rider reference while Starmie was referencing Ultraman. Missed opportunity

You're completely missing the point, again, that something having elements inspired by another thing isn't the same as the reference actually being part of the design, lore or even the concept.
For example, Salamence's color scheme and wings are clearly inspired by Devilman, but being a Devilman reference isn't actually an aspect of its design, lore or concept at all, GF just thought they'd be cool features on their flying dragon design, and so Mega Salamence does not literally turn it into a walking Devilman joke and instead focuses on some actual lore behind the line, the dream of flight, and taking that to the extreme (even dropping the Devilman wing shape in the process) although it's still a shitty looking design in its own right..
The same thing applies here. Staryu and Starmie have a glowing core like Ultraman and some movements when animated that take some inspiration from rubber suit aliens, but specifically being an Ultraman reference isn't actually an aspect of their design, lore or concept at all, GF just thought those would be cool features on their alien starfish designs. Mega Starmie then proceeds to ignore all of the actual design, lore and concepts (such as the glowing core that's the focal point of both the visual design and practically all of Staryu and Starmie's Pokedex entries, and was ironically the element that took inspiration from Ultraman in the first place) to literally turn it into a walking Ultraman joke.
>>
>>58460751
>that something having elements inspired by another thing isn't the same as the reference actually being part of the design, lore or even the concept.
The gem is literally an Ultraman color timer. To the point where they told the anime staff to lean into that during fights to make it overt.
>>
>>58461068
>The gem is literally an Ultraman color timer
It is not literally an Ultraman color timer. It is inspired by an Ultraman color timer.

>>
>>58454222
I think they are trying to make mixed attackers a thing, and Starmie with its lacking physical movepool is probably the closest they'll ever get without reworking the EV system entirely. It's simply too efficient to dump EVs into one attacking stat and ignore the other, but they don't get it.
