I wouldn't hate the design if it was like, some alternate form of Starmie, like with Darumaka or Gastrodon (I think Pokemon underutilizes though desu) but as a Mega it fuckin sucks. I loved this fucker the second I saw it leaked.
I think it's fine to enjot mega starmie, I find it very funny but you can't say it isn't lazy design, being "funny" doesn't automatically make it good, it's just the same pokemon stretched out, they could have easily kept the goofy long legs but added more elements on top of it to make it cool as well, but they did nothing, the star on it's back? Nothing.The coloration? Nothing.The gem? Nothing.The exicution is terrible.

Has it ever struck you that the average person doesn't exist in absolutes? M-Starmie is one of those "weird on paper, fun in execution" concepts that turns it into such a kaijumon that your can see the dude in the suit and that's fantastic. There's even a cute bit of language play as the Japanese for Starfish, ヒトデ hitode, has a homophone for 人, hito or human. All the Mega did was drop the pretense.

The funny thing is the starfish people from Warning from Space specifically had their suits designed so they would retain an actual proportional star. So regular Staryu and Starmie actually look more like them than Mega Starmie does. That's why Decarabia from SMT has even length limbs. It's supposed to look like these guys.Most the shots people keep posting of the aliens are skewed side shots that give the impression that they are elongated like Mega Starmie.

Personally, I don't think Voltorb or Electrode's designs are that bad inherently. They're simple but they work. Monster Catchers usually have a simple gimmick monster like this, for example Monster Rancher has Monol, a rectangle. Voltorb is an orb but it's a charming and simple design, the face allows it to have plenty of expression. For an initial roster of 150 mons I think it's good.Would I hate it if it came out later? Maybe probably, but it didn't. It came out with a much smaller roster that had simpler design principles. And let's be real, the worst people have to say about Voltorb and Electrode is that they're simple. Not that they're ugly or unappealing or break the world with their existence.
