It's alright but since there's already so many redesigns I think you could go with a more unique angle, like imagine what it would be like if it was Water/Poison or Water/Steel so it could be more memorable to you in the future

This. It doesn’t feel like a natural progression for the Totodile line. The problem is that unlike the other Water starters, Feraligatr doesn’t have a theme. Blastoise is like a firefighter that shoots water out of its cannons. Empoleon is an emperor; Primarina is a singer; Inteleon is a secret agent with biological gadgets; Quaquaval is a carnival dancer. Feraligatr is just a generic alligator that bites stuff and that’s it. There’s nothing that makes it stand out. They had the chance to make a proper final evolution for Totodile back in Gen 2 by building off of Croconaw’s caveman motif, but instead we just got “Totodile but bigger”. No mega evolution would look good for this Pokemon because it’s just a shit design from the get-go.

You don't need to follow a previous theme or motif. You just need to make something cool. You know what's cool? Fucking DRAGONS. They could have just made Feraligatr hulk out. Charizard is 5'7, Rhydon is 6'3", Snorlax is 6'11", Kangaskhan is 7'3", Feraligatr is 7'7" tall. But what if he got huger? What if his mega dex entry was like "the mega energy combined with latent dragon energy has caused Mega Feraligatr to go atomic!" Make him twice as big, huge arms and a fat long tail, maybe the spikes on his back split? There is a reason he has such tall protruding backplates.

You could even give him a new signature move where he does a double flying drop-kick. It could have been rad.

Croconaw (and the whole line by extension) having a caveman theme is a weird headcanon that this board and a few other fans have gaslighted themselves into believing with zero evidence. Nothing in the games, anime and merchandising supports this.
It's literally just a pattern meant to look like a cracked egg or molten skin, to emphasize it being bigger and more developed than its preevolution.

Starters don't need to represent a profession or human archetype to have a theme. It's a savage crocodile or crocodilian dinosaur that bites hard, that's all it needs to have as a theme.

Mega Feraligatr would have been great if its helmet was more like a frill instead of awkwardly standing straight up.
