Why is the pokemon roster of the original safari zone so much better than any subsequent safari zone? Like sure the HGSS one is better, but its not as special as the original kanto one

Early installment weirdness, please understand.

There were a dozen mons you couldn't find anywhere else at the time so it made them feel a lot more special. Pretty sure Hoenn's safari had no exclusive Gen 3 mons in it and the Great marsh only had a couple of exclusives.

tfw most of the good pokemon were in safari zone and really hard to find much less catch

Emerald is also good (but postgame) and HGSS (but you need to build zones and wastes a lot of your time). Yeah Kanto's Safari Zone wins

Probably because it was made with the rare Pokemon in mind, I agree with the other anon that Emerald does a good job since it’s used for Gen I and II Pokemon the player couldn’t catch up to that point, but I think including Dratini makes the Kanto one stand above it. Johto’s is just a playground and while it’s nice for getting a lot of different Pokemon the interchangeability of the zones gives it a lack of identity compared to the rest. Sinnoh’s is the most boring due to the lack of interesting Pokemon like it got a bit better in Platinum but a lot of the rarer Pokemon like Skorupi, Croagunk and Tangela feel more inline with the middle rare ones from Kanto like Rhyhorn and Exeggcute but lacks the high rares like Chansey

>tfw the kangaskhan equivalent in the great marsh is carnivine
>>

Yeah although the difference there is that Kangaskhan was previously shown to be a Pokemon players would want to seek out as it was the ace of Giovanni’s team in Rocket Hideout. Carnivine meanwhile isn’t used by any boss trainers and I can’t even recall what would probably be the first trainer you’d face against it (I wanna say it’s probably a Ranger around Pastoria or an Ace Trainer on the Snow Routes)

Because it felt like a zoo of exotic non-Kanto pokemon. Tauros, Chansey, Kangaskhan, Dratini... loads of new and exciting mons to be found.

Newer games are full of normal route fodder.

I recall this is the only location in gen 1 were the grass patches aren't perfect square/rectangles
