i can confirm he knows things, we were in the ap classes together & he went to one of the top liberal arts colleges in the us. (i dont think he had a very good time there tho, considering he hopped off to japan as soon as he could and disappeared from us/english social media stuff til starting this channel a few years back. he had kind of a traditional/conservative upbringing & while he doesnt say anything or judge people i think hes probably not that comfortable around...you know...liberal arts college types of current years. not even talking about flag wars & letter people, i think he wanted to perform in classical & traditional plays & stuff mostly, & that just isnt really what they do there anymore.)

his schedule in highschool was coming home at 4pm, doing homework fast as possible, sleeping til midnight, then waking up & playing final fantasy/fire emblem/pokemon/wow until 8am when school started. he went hard on those games, like doing the stat maxing stuff in fire emblem where you figure out the random numbers its going to use on your next levelup and then resetting if theyre bad. ive read about a lot of that stuff but i find it too exhausting to actually do myself.

i really dont like streams and game videos as a concept in general, i think it robs people of the desire to play games themselves because they feel bad at games and lonely compared to watching someone else play. its also just a huge time suck for kids and teens because theres infinite amounts of it...when i was a kid im sure i was just terrible at games but i didnt know mostly and it was fine, you play and you get better. but if you just watch videos instead, you never get better, and you feel just awful when you actually try, the worse the older you are because you know it more.

so those are games that someone could try playing and they could follow along with the things he does exactly, like they could listen to explanations or watch what he does and do that in pokemon and fire emblem...in comparison you cant do that with shooters or mobas, you have to develop good reflexes and clicking skills etc to feel like anything but crap at those, so kids watching cant just copy what he does and play the games themselves like they can with pokemon.

this kind of thing is a real concern for me -- my younger sister wouldnt even play pokemon without asking me what to do every single turn she was in a battle, like which moves were supereffective against the opponent and stuff. it really bugged me not because i minded telling her but because it was so different from what i did, which was just learning by trying and often failing, but eventually learning, whereas when you just keep asking someone you dont actually learn from experience the same way. so i think its really important to get kids the confidence to actually play games themselves. maybe that means i should make videos where i explain things but then make a lot of stupid accidentally-on-purpose mistakes to make kids feel ok about getting things wrong sometimes. like him, but the joke is that i faceplant constantly. i think it oculd work lel. however i have nowhere near the energy to do 12 hour streams twice a week lmao. i would dissolve.

idk how old you are but im gonna guess under 30 -- i feel like ppl younger than us have a really bad sense for when someone is joking around...i mean people say "zoomers dont laugh" and stuff like that which i dont think is true actually but theres definitely a lack of just like....goofiness in general? idk.

if theres like an awkward silence or tension of some kind he would just start saying goofy lines to get ppl onto another subject, hes basically just filling the air like you have to do on the radio. most ppl dont know this but on a real radio broadcast you actually get fined by the fcc if there's "dead air" aka more than 5 seconds of silence. not really sure why that is, but in radio training they basically teach you to say SOMETHING no matter what rather than having dead air, and i think he did some of that at least. its also kind of the case in theater, where if someone else forgets their line or something goes wrong and no one knows what to do, just repeating your lines in an increasingly funny voice is a pretty good way to get the attention on you and "take the fall" instead of letting the person who forgot their lines or messed up melt under the spotlight if you know what i mean.

yeah idk about that, i got a gameboy fairly late and my first game was silver so most ppl already knew a lot more than i did. i mean i looked a lot of stuff up and made my parents buy me the strategy guides lol, im not saying i did it with my massive awesome brain or anything. it wouldnt have bothered me if she was just looking stuff up but thats another way of learning really. making someone else do it every single time isnt even really playing, its more like watching them play.

sort of similarly, both of my sisters would occasionally want to play like a gamecube game i was playing, not even like a hard one just like windwaker or kirby air ride or something, and they would make my parents make me give them a turn, but then they would get bored and stop in like literally 5 minutes. eventually i was just like ok sure knowing they wouldnt actually play any real amount. not saying they have to like what i like obviously but it seemed like they wanted to play and yet at the first thing they didnt get immediately they would just feel like they failed and stop rather than trying agian.

a worse example was that one time later, when i was like 15 and they were like 10ish, they were trying to set up the wii which had been put away for some reason, and they came and asked me to do it. i was busy with something and i was like "each of the cords only goes in one spot, just look at the holes and find the cord that goes in that hole, you cant mess up" and they went back to it and idk just wouldnt do it. they made my mom make me do it. i was like ok thats genuinely weird...setting up a wii is childproofed on purpose, you just put the things where they fit. but idk they were like afraid of it exploding or something. i really dont know.

i type at 100 wpm as i mentioned previously. faster than talking with my mouth. i was already pretty good but then during college i had a side gig writing bespoke blogspam to game google searches. made 60k over a few years but then i got fired for starting to write nonsense rambling about yugioh and junk into the articles. actually did that for almost a year before anyone noticed because no one was checking kek. i would just put something on tv and type away with only half my brain. it was a big industry in the days before chatgpt, and as a matter of fact its quite likely that the owner of that business sold all the articles as chatgpt training material, since i'm sure he knew his business would be killed by it and thats the only way he could exit with a good sum to start something else. if that did happen, i contributed 8 million words to chatgpt's original several-billion-word corpus, or about 1 part in 50,000. i'm quite possibly personally responsible for a good number of the times it acts weird and nonsensical.

idk its kind of too weird since i know him really. not that i watch streams anyway generally...i watched a bit of aui_2000 and eternalenvy dota streams like idk six or seven years ago when they were playing in TI, but it got kinda boring eventually because they didnt really say much. i guess you cant really when playing high level dota cause it takes a lot of focus. it was fairly funny for a while though because they reminded me of a lot of the guys i was in classes with at college....aui_2000 especially, like chill seeming hoodie wearin guys who didnt act like they especially cared about grades and often didnt pay much attention in class, but then you would find out they were like secretly chess grandmasters or state tennis champ in hs and you would be like what?? him?? he looks half asleep in class lol...

now as a matter of fact, i can actually have about 50% of a talking conversation with someone while i type at 100 wpm, so i can kind of go on one and a half streams at once, but i miss a lot of things in the talking conversation and make more typoes while typing as well. i can rant about something pretty well while typing about something else, but i cant listen very well at all while typing. funnily however if i rant via talking while talking via typing i will often accidentally type a word that i was saying rather than the word that i meant to type, if theyre sort of close to each other. like if i was ranting about asparagus for some reason via my mouth and typing about aspergillus i would probably do a mixup pretty often.

he did make one shorter video about playing turtlewow, which is a free classic wow server modified with fan additions -- at the time he posted the video, i was actually also playing turtlewow, but this was several months before i even knew about his channel. he was already level 60 in turtlewow when he posted the video, so apparently hes also doing THAT in whatever free time he fucking has between working and streaming...this guy goes hard like i said!! i would like to play turtlewow with him since you can do a lot of fun stuff even just with 2 people, but i was playing horde and he was alliance. i made an allliance character once i found out about this but im only level 20 so far. it doesnt take that long to level in turtlewow (2x exp compared to classic wow) but i dont go that hard on things as i said loll.

plus itd be way the hell funnier if i joined his discord and just pretended to be a fan for a while and then like started to seem to know more and more things about him that a random person shouldnt know.

but you know with this handy new chatgpt thing anyone can do anything in fairly short order right? at least with respect to programming. ive had it write me some photoshop scripts in javascript that were pretty helpful -- funnily the first few versions it wrote actually errored out due to it making mistakes, but when i reported the errors back to it, it was able to edit the code to fix whatever caused the error, and after a few rounds it worked as intended. kind of just like doing the programming yourself really. that was easy enough and i dont know anything about javascript whereas i am fairly familiar with python so it should be easier with pygame or godot.

i kind of had a thing about wanting to make at least some kind of game by the end of this year...not a firm ny resolution or anything, but i wanted to finally do it. maybe i will, this way....it could all be coming together.

guess i will just go with pygame then, or else like py3d or something. a reasonably novel idea i suppose would be to generate fakemons via ai in some way, ideally just locally via a simple thing like pix2pix trained on a database of animals compared against pokemon based on those animals. i would have to find pictures of animals posed in similar ways to their derived pokemon and then remove the backgrounds in order to create the training set, but as there are over a thousand pokemon now its probably enough to at least get some semblance of results.

thinking further, i would actually have a lot more images to work with, if i used all official art of pokemon based on animals and matched up that art to the real animals in similar poses. that would definitely give me enough training material to build a simple model that users could then run locally to generate fakemons from animals. perhaps i could include objects as well.

really perhaps objects are a better thing to start with! objects have a much more limited range of poses.

for anyone reading whose unfamiliar, this is different from simply putting "create a lizard fakemon" or w/e into something like dall-e -- this would be creating my own ai locally, which supposedly is fairly doable with a regular pc if your dataset is only a few thousand before-and-after image pairs...users could then run this trained-on-pokemon-only ai on their own machines rather than having to use a 3rd party general image generator like dall-e.

maybe this is a stupid idea. "ai slop" and all. but pokemon randomizers were always pretty fun, whereas other procedurally generated games are mostly samey and boring. pokemon's just got that something about it.

ironically after its changed ownership several times tumblr is now the only other big place besides 4chan with basically no rules. in fact you could never actually get *banned* for being a sex realist, but as of now the only rules are no pics of genitals and no "promotion of self harm" aka no cutting or saying kys. tumblr was actually where a lot of terfs started going (or going back to) during the period when twitter was banning them hardcore along with reddit.

the nice thing about tumblr is that its actually a blog host -- you get an actual proper webpage thats indexed by google and publicly viewable, rather than just a gated-behind-login social media page as with other platforms. the advantages of this are a bit subtle -- the big one is that you can actually fully & freely edit the html of your tumblr like a geocities. but also, posting things on tumblr with linkbacks to another site is a million times better for seo purposes than posting on other social media. i use a tumblr as a blog for a business site of mine and even though i dont get that many likes or visible interactions, it has an enormous effect on seo and traffic. kind of a hidden secret imo. i could say a lot more about why tumblr is actually good (in fact excellent) but thats not what this thread is about so i wont!

it was two of these to be specific. not all that caffeinated. i drink enough water to pee clear like half the time, not that much water really but more importantly i dont eat very much salty food like fastfood or frozen foods. way more salt in that stuff than ppl realize....waaaay more in almost all restaurant food as well. i have been utilizing the free mcodnalds mcmonopoly plays (you can get 10 a day) to eat a lot of free double cheeseburgers but when its just that without fries its not that much salt really even if you have two in a day.

ive learned that i cant eat a big bag of chips and a frozen pizza in the same day though, thats instantly way too much salt and ill feel like a dried out beef jerky mummy (futurama joke) by next morning if i have that.

honestly training an ai model on object and plant based pokemon would probably be pretty doable without too much human effort in putting together the data banks. the training set would be a collection of object & plant pokemon sprites, plus a corresponding collection of images of the objects and plants those pokemon are based on. image-to-image training sets of this nature require at least a thousand or so image pairs to give good results (according to chatgpt anyway lol) so i could use multiple games' sprites for each pokemon plus several different images of the object/plant its based on. if thats not enough image pairs i could just have some of the sprites in there twice corresponding to different images of the object/plant. could be a funny idea. the plot of the game based on this technology could involve a "pokemon generator" that turns any object or plant into a pokemon -- and of course it would be illegal to throw in an animal, because thats animal testing! (though there arent really many non-pokemon animals in pokemon anyway. just a few fish...and it would be funny if fish just turned into magikarps.)

some possible haywires with this -- if people are adding their own image of an object/plant to turn into a pokemon, the results would depend on them putting in a good picture, ideally with the object centered on a white background and pictured front-on. i could have some controls to check that in a basic way but i would have no way of preventing people from putting in a picture thats actually an animal...i suppose it would be enough to explain why that probably wont work well and then let people do what they like. someone could also put in like a dildo but that would be on them. you could also put in a picture of a real pokemon, or of a doll or figurine of a real pokemon...but thats kind of a cool idea, like an object pokemon thats a ghostly possessed statue of another pokemon? kind of like a mimikyuu but with those rhydon statues that were everywhere lol.

i also thought of kind of a wrinkle with that pix2pix image-to-image model idea, which is that pokemon generally have backsprites as well as a main sprite -- it wouldnt really be possible to "flip" things, since the back of something isnt always the same as the front, and it wouldnt really work to make a separate model for backsprites either, because they would then come out looking possibly quite different from the front sprite for a given object/plant thats being pokemonized.

so i would probably want to make my game such that only front sprites are used. i actually did make a really tiny demo of a "metroidvania" style pokemon game several years ago, aka one that works sort of like pokemon legends seems to in that you have a trainer that walks around & then pokemon moving around to some extent on their own. (when i say a tiny demo i mean literally one screen where you can move back and forth and then if you go past the middle a hidden spearow flies at you out of a tree. i think my idea was to have it start a battle if your trainer touches a wild pokemon (or meets eyes with a trainer ofc i suppose) but the battle screen could be two front sprites against each other on a somewhat wider screen/field.

with that setup for the game i wouldnt have to worry about backsprites, and i would also be able to utilize a lot more free assets as theres a lot of free 2d pixel art for side scrolling games. so that is what i will go with for now. before i can start on that though i will have to accumulate the image training sets.

another nother wrinkle i suppose is how to generate types, stats, and movesets for a converted plant/object...types i could probably get by webscraping the results of a google reverse image search for the plant/object for type words or type-related words, aka for a battery it would probably include electric or electricity somewhere in those results. stats could be harder. i could do the ez thing and simply give generated mons the average stats for their assigned type, and then a random selection of moves based to some extent on their type, the way that pokemon randomizers do...but idk, thats hard to tune, i feel like it would end up being either boring and samey between generated mons or else just too random and unpredictable, sometimes awful sometimes op.

maybe this is stupid idea and i should do something else. really ive just been wanting to train a pix2pix model since i learned recently that its fairly doable on a regular pc with a few thousand corresponding image pairs. well whatever! ill keep thinking.

i could go on a whole tangent about how phones and videos cause eye contact problems that instinctually get on peoples nerves without them realizing, but all ill say itt is that its bad not to have eye contact with a person youre talking to irl (ie because theyre looking at a phone the whole time) and its also bad to have eye contact with people who aren't there with you irl (as is the case when someone makes a video looking directly into the camera.) with regard to that, its the human brain's instinct to think that eye contact with someone means you're currently talking...the lizard brain doesnt understand that its only a video, it expects human respect and reactions from anyone youre in eye contact with, and it gets upset and nervous if it doesnt get normal human interpersonal reactions.

you know, on second (or third) thought, i would have to compile quite a lot of stuff to embark on that project -- obecjt/plantmon and corresponding objects/plants for training the model, and then text files with all the abilities, stats, etc to assign those for a given generated object/plantmon, plus i guess also a list of all the items in pokemon, before i could even embark on making the game itself. also i have no idea if the pix2pix image-to-image training would actually make anything interesting...though i feel like it would be funny regardless.

i had another idea thats just now coming back to me about a side-scrolling pokemon game set in ancient egypt using philip glass's akhnaten as a soundtrack. i think ancient egypt is cool but also it being an ancient setting would explain why things are different -- in other words there could be no balls, or only really rare artisanal apricorn ones that are considered sacred, and you would juts have like 1 to 3 pokemon walking around with you and fighting other things...i think its already the case that in the "ancient times" of the pokemon universe they didnt have the laws against pokemon fighting people or w/e that they do in the modern pokemon world. so things could get real scary!

i havent checked to see if this code works yet cause i need to install a few dependencies myself, but it already did one neat think i never thought of, which is that it implemented a feature that draws animated shapes if sprites aren't found (and it actually generates placeholder sprite sheets if none are found.) but if they had this functionality in pokemon red/blue then there would have been no missingno! if i wanted to have my own missingnos, i would have to ask chatgpt to alter that to load a random part of a random file from the system as if it were a sprite if a sprite fails to load. but it would be kind of goofy to create glitch potential artificially like that.

ctrl-f'd "scarabeet" in the code and found the list of test species chatgpt created without asking. fairly funny! well half of them are. desertlark, sandpup, ra-hound and mini-scarab aren't quite right, those are more like rpg enemy names.

i still intend to just make a fangame with real pokemon for now, but i think ill keep scarabeet, sphixling and mummat in, and maybe ra-hound, as a tribute to chatgpt for doing the heavy lifting here in terms of code. scarabeet sounds like a kriketot/volbeat mid size single stage bug to me, and i could see an evolution tree that goes sphinxling --> ra-hound --> mummat, i think you can picture sphinxling yourself, and probably ra-hound, just from the names -- at first a puppy with a sphinx type mini mane, then a slender somewhat adolescent classic middle stage with a more "pharaoh anubis" vibe, and then mummat is the adult that starts to get leathery peeling away skin from all the desert winds and stuff. i'm picturing sort of sandstorm hunters, ground type, maybe ground/dark, or maybe just mummat is ground/ghost and the others are ground...they hunt in packs by whipping up sandstorms with their howling and then blending in with the sands to nip and exhaust things until they collapse blinded by the sand. scary!

however, i will ask chatgpt what it was picturing when it made up these mons, without telling it my interpretation. curious what it will say.

it looks like we were more or less on the same wavelength for scarabeet, sphixling and ra-hound, at least as far as the general look and vibe of the critters. i like my idea for mummat better though...i suppose i would of course, but chatgpt's idea here strikes me as being really "later gen" in the sense of like, why is it wrapped in linen? where does it get that from? and then changing from a bimplet little weak thing into a big "regal" thing in the late stages is rather later-gen as well...but its not like i specified "only be inspired by the earlier gens" or anything -- i didnt even know it was going to get creative!

but now i'm really freakin out, and heres why...did you notice in the description for ra-hound that it invented light type? that makes sense, of course, because ancient egyptians didnt know about electricity - a glowing pikachu or zapdos would seem to them to have light powers, not electrical. we do still call lightning lightning after all -- people thought it was a bolt of light, because they didn't know about electricity at all.

so thats pretty clever. but its not why im freakin out. im freakin out because *i had the exact same idea 7 or 8 years ago when i started thinking about an egyptian pokemon game.* i had the thought that electric pokemon would have seemed to have light powers, and they might well have held them sacred above other pokemon. how fucking crazy is that?

i have to do at least some of my regular work today or ill be really behind and my wrist is starting to hurt. so you may be out of luck. i'm letting chatgpt make its own pixel art designs for the pokemon it spontaneously invented though. this one is kind of just a beetle lol. its supposed to have hieroglyphs on the wings but that doesnt really come out in pixel art i suppose.

i assumed scarabeet was scarab plus beet considering beets are pretty important agriculturally in egypt, and in ancient times sugar beets were one of the few ways that people could get any kind of sugar type thing, honey being basically the only other. beets are dark and shiny like a beetle so i thought a beet beetle was a need idea. the sugar part could also be involved in a sort of honeydew like way...not the melon (though those are pretty big [as in important[ in egypt as well) but rather the sugarwater type "dew" that aphids will make as they drink tree sap and sort of sweat out the sugar thats beyond their nutritional needs. lots of potential there!

i bet that when it made up the name "scarabeet" it was a bit influenced by the importance of beets in egypt, but when i asked it to expand on that it forgot about it...or maybe it was really just shortening "scarab beetle" the whole time and it was only me seeing the relation to beets the vegetable. anyhow! neat stuff.

this is all somewhat of a sidetrack to my actual project idea; i wouldnt actually be intending to use any ai-generated assets or anything else, i just wanted to do this because of the new pokemon chatgpt invented without asking as placeholders in the script i asked it to make. perhaps it wasnt able to just use existing pokemon due to copyright restrictions it has to work with? or maybe it assumed i wouldnt want to violate copyright law myself lol. not really a problem in the long run, i can just add in real pokemon and their real sprites myself.

Sorry, I guess I didn't really clarify. It's still a Pokémon game through and through and you are battling Pokémon pretty much (some battles were pretty challenging). However, the storyline and progression is pretty much similar to the YuGiOh VRAINS anime. Hope this helps.

Not sure if you're into the fangame scene at all, but I'd personally rank this game ahead of stuff like Unbreakable Ties and most Spanish fangames. But I do personally think Rejuvenation and the Soulstones series are slightly better. But still a solid game! You really need to be patient and play it through; the payoff is worth it.

i havent looked into fangames in quite a few years; ive played a few romhacks but prefer basic difficulty ones. last time i looked into it there were just starting to be some pokemon games built from the ground up in rpgmaker but they were very very laggy and not great in a number of ways (although they looked pretty nice.) i did wonder why people didnt just code new games from the ground up because its not like the functionalities are very complicated and gen1/2/3 style graphics would be pretty easy to implement as well since people have extracted all the sprites from the games long ago.

ive never been patient with games tho lol if i feel like time is being wasted...it feels disrespectful when people have lots of things to do. like if a game is going to involve grinding of any kind it had better be thrilling or beautiful or nice in some way. i think wow is pretty good in that regard as the world is nice, the music is nice, and its an mmo so you have to always be on your guard to some extent (on a pvp server anyway)...that is its not just sitting there clicking or whatever. i basically got really sad about games in general once those fricking explicit-grind "cookie clicker" things started appearing, its like the isekai anime of games, like a game about being a game. not saying this is that (ofc i wouldnt know yet) but your caveat scares me a bit.

my girlfriend has more patience with that kind of thing usually; ill tell her about it & maybe she will be interested and then ill get to see what its like without having to play grindy parts myself. (or i could watch a video! just kidding. i have less patience for that than grindy games themselves. different when its gf of course because then its a conversation instead of just one-way watching.)

No problem! DESU, I think I was kinda underselling it a bit - its runtime *is* longer than than the Switch releases Game Freak has been sharting out the last few years. But it doesn't overstay its welcome.
It was nice because Imported Cheese talked about it a fair amount in his streams, from time to time, and it was cool to get insider knowledge on the dev process for Pokémon Virtualization. I think the other main dev (Vincent? I think?) would sometimes pop up in the streams.
And yes, that's kinda the gist of it. The VRAINS anime itself is a bit polarizing but I think he was able to capture that essence decently well.

this is spaghetti naporitan by the way, a japanese version of italian spaghetti that they started making in japan in the postwar period when they had tons of american ration foods like ketchup and hot dogs and no idea what to do with them. i just wanted to put in some date palms as background objects but i couldnt work out quite how to do that just from the code, i think the way chatgpt wrote it it just draws squares for background objects and isnt yet equipped to load sprites for objects. would take 2 seconds for chatgpt to add it in of course but i ran out of free queries for today lol. the first paid tier is only a few bucks a month so i may do that idk. i am reasonably familiar with python as i said but deeyamn this is faster. it took me a whole day of work to get to basically this point when i wrote a demo for basically this game years and years ago. (not even to here in terms of creature behaviors and the framework to add more but i put in more sprites and had basic movements in the tiny demo i made myself.) this on the other hand took about 5 or 6 requests to chatgpt so like 10 minutes of its time and a few minutes to add in some sprites.

but anyway cause i couldnt add bg objects and im out of chatgpt requests for today i just added "datepalm" as if it were a pokemon so i could take a screenshot like this. but that got me thinking, a "dateless palm" pokemon thats like a lonely tree in the middle of the desert with a face like that one "oh" rage face from way back would be really funny. im gonna have a hard time not putting fakemons into this lmao, considering i could have chatgpt do the pixel art..........tempting....but no, i will stick to real pokemon sprites for now, and either learn to do pixel art myself (unlikely anytime soon) or meet someone who wants to do teh arts wif my game. lmk if you happen to be reading this...but im probably gonna progress pretty slowly on this as i usually do lol. hell you could do it yourself since anyone can talk to chatgpt lol...but i promise the ideas in my head are really goood! hennyway...fun stuff.

but what he does makes sense -- he basically does an enormous stream so he has a lot of material to rework into vods, compilations and funny moments videos. someone else said it seemed like he was saying lines over and over as a rehearsal to get them right and pick the best one for the vod and thats probably pretty accurate. its an interesting strategy, kind of like when they include outtakes and blooper reels as bonus content on dvds

i suppose many of you are probably young enough that you didnt have dvds though

well sonny let me tell you, nobody normal ever got any damn where. theres nothing in the 4chan rules that says you cant post as much as you like. you dont even have to be talking to anybody. im just replying to people. mostly. i COULD just be using a thread as my personal notebook even if no one else cared. completely allowed on 4chan!

it really bothers me when people try to do this weird kind of "youre werd" sort of "cringe shaming" thing...it bothers me in real life but on fucking 4chan? are you fucking kidding? if you ever come to this place youre weird, if you post even once then most people will think youre reaaallly weird just for being here. so dont try to pull this crap here.

many people in fact would LIKE to post more, but because of people like you, theyre afraid of "being weird" or getting called various names like autist or schizo.

but when im just here doing whatever i want, theyre like, well, i guess if that guy can do that, then i dont have to worry about posting long things, because im really not weird compared to THAT guy. and so, what i notice is that, when i do things like this, other people feel more free to make long posts and talk about random things. in politics this is called the "overton window" more or less -- what happens is that by doing whatever tf i want, i push the boundaries so that "medium weird" behavior seems normal in comparison. i do this partially on purpose, when people start to say things like what youve said, but really i just do not care about what you think at fucking all. at least not in that way.

it feels really weird to explain the concept of friends to people who seem to be adults or close to it. but like, being friends doesnt mean youre 100% talking to each other all the time forever.

back in the olden days, you know, before smartphones, you couldnt talk to people all the time...you would see each other at school & then youd have to hang out together if you wanted to keep talking. thats how things were when i was in elementary school, because back then there were no smartphones, kids didnt have cellphones or computers until middle school generally. so with my elementary school friends there was basically school, going over peoples houses, or thats it really. you could call people on the regular telephone ofc but there was only 1 per house so you couldnt take it up for very long.

then in middle school it was flipphones + computers with instant messaging, and you could text on a flipphone but it was very slow so people would mostly use that for like short info like "im at ur house let me in" or w/e. and obviously you had to be sitting at the computer to do IMs via AIM, and while i had a laptop at that point most people still didnt, they might just have a desktop in their room or there might be 1 or 2 computers in their whole house.

i started being friends with this guy at the end of middle school when he moved to my town, so we would talk on AIM a fair amount but like, back then a fair amount meant like a few hours a few times a week, if that much. people later moved on to using skype for IMing as well as steam chat, but this was all on computers only. i still had an old style cellphone until a few years into college so i just never really got used to the idea that people could text you anytime anywhere and expect you to respond. for me its still like, if im at the computer and not busy, ok ill talk, but you cant really expect a response all the time because i might be busy playing a game or working or i might just be out.

i find it really hard to deal with younger people because they expect you to be always ready to respond to things from your phone, and if you dont reply for like one day they freak out on you thinking you hate them or youre ghosting them or w/e. like maybe i dont want to talk but maybe ive just been playing vidya and not looking at my messages, or maybe im just tired.

and like, for me, talking online or by text is really still just for in between when youre actually hanging out together. like ofc you can play some games online and talk about stuff and send each other music and w/e but if youre in different places and on different schedules then its hard to coordinate playing a game together and i mean you have other friends at college and stuff who you CAN hang out with in real life.

my perspective is basically, its more important to be really there or "really present" with the people you know in real life, rather than dividing your attention between real life and online people and not really being fully present with either of them.

so i had friends at my college, he had friends at his college, we were like 700 miles apart at that point and busy with classes and stuff. we still talked occasionally but mostly like if we had big news of some kind like a new game to tell them about or we started dating someone. and as i said, around that time i started living with my gf who i met at college, so we were mostly hanging out or sleeping or ya knoww doin tha business, he also had a girlfriend at college and was really busy with college plays and stuff. and then as i said he moved to japan after college so we were like 5000 miles apart and on opposite day/night cycles cause of the time difference.

feels weird to explain things in this much detail when like, this is really utterly normal. you dont necessarily talk to friends all the time forever, you can fall in and out of touch and it doesnt mean youre not friends.

of course, he could think im a total jerk now, i really wouldnt know. but im not "refusing" to talk to him just because im not doing it. im just not gonna distract him from his busy schedule for random talking sessions when we're 5000 miles apart. like hes probably got friends in japan, maybe a gf idk, i have things to do and people to talk to here.

now if we were gonna work together on something, that might be an entirely different question. but even so, not everyone wants to know that people who know them irl know about their youtube channel. maybe it would stress them out to think about people they know finding it and watching. maybe they would worry about people sharing embarrassing deets or stories from way back when. not that there are really any with him lol, aside from crushing hard on girls. theres definitely more embarrassing things about me that he knows really kek....

what i would much rather do is become someone slightly known in the same circles without revealing who i am, and then end up collaborating on a game or some video thing, and then eventually he would figure it out. that would be way the fuck funnier and then we would actually be doing something together so there would be a reason to talk. i have things all planned out...only it would ruin it all if he saw this thread. so dont tell!
