The problem isn't so much the age, it's how the characters are designed. They're designed more like a template than an actual character, which doesn't work with this new pixar-esque style they have going on.

Take a good look at OP's characters for instance. Certain hairstyles fit better, as do certain fits. The character was designed to appear a certain way or a specific number of ways (generally for the female for instance, short parted hair). If you give her longer hair, she looks younger, or off.

That's kind of the whole problem, a lot of Gym Leaders and various characters look fine in this style because they are designed to be that way, the player character is not, you can change how they look, and in a lot of cases, it comes off as stilted and looking wrong, but the initial template base too in the main games, is pretty fucking bland as well to encourage you to "be yourself or whoever you want with the cosmetics/styles", and it's bad. Though I will say that an older protag does feel better in terms of the direction of the story and just how the proportions/clothes tend to look.
