I haven't posted in these threads in a while, several years actually, but I wanted to ask the remaining /padt/ denizens this question. If you wanted anipoke to retire Ash and have him replaced, retrospectively what do you think of that decision now? As someone who was a major advocate of just letting Ash rest and moving on from him, I kind of regret having that opinion. It's colored by the fact that I thought Journeys was an overall mediocre anime that didn't handle the finality of Ash's character well at all, but even then it felt like there was a weight off the anime's shoulders and the show could move forward. Now that we're basically somewhere near the end of Horizons, I no longer think the anime moved forward. The production values and rushed nature of the show seem to be the worst they've ever been and the story/characterization hasn't really improved or been any more inventive. Is there reason to be optimistic about future seasons?

I thought that removing Ash meant the anime was getting a well-needed kick in the pants but that doesn't seem to have happened. In the 90s, the anime was a gateway to the Pokemon brand as a whole. It was accessible and gave the characters and monsters personalities, far better than the GameBoy or TCG could convey. Now, they release all kinds of short videos on social media and the games have good enough graphics and sound design to make the world seem alive. The anime doesn't have to try anymore. It can continue to produce anything so long as it sells merchandise to kids aged 7-11.With that said, I'm not entirely sure the anime continues to exist as a weekly show after Horizons. It just makes less and less sense to keep the anime going when it's been stuck in a continual decline since 2000.
