The way digimon did it was they just kept adding more top tier monsters at the end of the evolution chain instead of making a ton of new baby/child monsters with entirely new lines. Because of this we had animated sprites and follow animations 5 years before pokemon did as well as new models every console cycle instead of the same crusty shit from N64 till the wii and models made in 2010 still being used now.Also this chart isn't even complete more things have been added to it.
