Why is there a desert in the middle of a peninsula in the northeastern US climate
>>58529161kalos had a desert right next to the city too though
>>58529161its supposed to be the mojave and vegas, why thats in new york is anyones guess
>>58529161Ground Zero
>>585291619/11
It’s a food desert. Too many scraggy and all the grocery stores go out of business.
>>58529161Why is there a frosty park in the middle of Lumiose, who knows
>>58529274its supposed to be the [HEADCANON]
>>58529161theme park region
>>58529161With relic castle buried there it's implied the whole area got assblasted during the war with the dragons, why it turned to sand is anyones guess.
>>58529335but enough about gen6+
>>58529161its a reverse central park
>>58529341it started with 5. there's no need to deflect
>>58529161because Gamefreak gave up on worldbuilding after Gen 4
>>58529350>backtracking already a gym in? DON'T MIND IF I DO!Why are poketurds the only ones that defend this? If this was in any other RPG people would shit on it relentlessly
>>58529161Because the game devs say there needs to be a desert area in every porkyman game and unova is designed badly.
>>58529274>>58529334>Neon entertainment carnival city right next to a desert with ruins and Nazca birdsMakes sense as a Vegas parallel. Unova is clearly more than just NY. You've got towns with New Mexico style architecture. You've got a polluted Las Angeles parallel with a port, punk scene and Hollywood. The town with the B2W2 water gym screams Florida.
>>58529371backtracking is kino
>>58529396no desert in sinnoh
>>58529161It's where jet fuel melted steel beams
>>58529161It’s really quite simple if you think about it. Two large mountain chains flank either side of the middle peninsula. It creates a rain shadow effect that dries out that region. The only reason the rest of the peninsula isn’t desert is either because of natural rivers systems from the mountains creating fertile land or human development. The area above Castellia city is only recently been developed though so therefore the land is still the natural barren desert
>>58529161I mean deserts can be anywhere in the world, it's really not that weird. And it's pokemon, having different environments is fun. Hoenn had a desert too, as did Kalos. It's fine.
>>58529334Not really, pokewood seems like a pretty clear reference to California
>>58529172>criticise unova>bort's instinct is to instantly pivot to either kalos or johtoevery time
>>58530338It does have one. Route 228 with the kink day/night jazzy music. The difference is that its located on the resort island which makes sense because of the volcano
>>58530591yawnfag...
>>58530591There is nothing to discuss with Johto. It's just a boring region where the main goal for fans is to leave it as soon as possible.
I'm not sure, but having a desert like this isn't ENTIRELY unheard of. Depending on the orientation, the mountains could interrupt the weather patterns. It happens with east and west Washington, with the rather abrupt transistion between the desert and forests. That said it's probably like that one anon said, Unova doesn't represent JUST New York.SOMEHOW I accidentally removed Washington from my sentence before posting and just noticed.
>>58529343central park is entralink though
Unova, while ostensibly based on new york, is also kind of a catch-all U.S. region
>>58529161its a video game
>>58530211Yeah idk why people keep parroting the unova Is just le new york when it's a microcosm of the United States as a whole
>>58529161the most accepted theory is that it represents ground zero, aka, 9/11 crashing site given its placement
>>58529161Looking at it closely, Unova’s map is so weird. Entralink especially.
>>58532274It’s the most lazily put together theme parky looking region in the franchise
>>58532291but enuff bout jeetlar
>>58529161Because Unova's shape is modeled after NYC and the tristate area; its actual climate is unique.
>people defend this theme park regionlol
theme is bussword
>>58532708>People defend things they likeYou’re either a newfag or an actual retard
>>58532754call me whatever you want, you ignored on purpose theme park which further proves you got hurt for your favorite diluted experience on railways
holy yawn
>>58530591You know Kalos and Johto fags puvot to Unova far more
>>58532291I disagree. Galar and Paldea are both far worse.
>>58532836
>>58532854go search this retarded image in the archive, yawnoid’s(You) made it and has been spamming it for years lol
>>58530707>it's not unheard of
>>58532252>Buried ghosts underneath it (not Vegas lol)>Kyruem is 9'10>It's got a craterI get what they were going for: They wanted an American version of the Burned Tower. The problem is that 9/11 is too recent (South Park still hasn't invoked their AIDS role on it). It ends up reading like a tasteless reference, which is why you won't ever see GF touch Unova again.
>>58532291Factual post i must declare. It even has a ferris wheel.
>>58529350ah yes in Gen 4Hoenn didn’t have a sandstormy desert nestled between a forested volcano and some grassy routes
>>58529161It's commentary on the global financial crises post 2008 and it's impact on mid town Manhattan.
>>58535193Also I had this assumption as a young teen when I first played BW and BW2.This isn't a shitpost, it's a legit conclusion I made as a teenager and I thought gamefreak was pretty neato for introducing such commentary.
>>58529161I figuere it's just a really big sand dune.Doesn't seem like it's particularly hot or arid, there are even houses there.
>>58532252I can see how that could influence it's design too, but mainly it's >>58535193As for how it works in the reality of pokemon? Don't know. Legendary Pokemon shenanigans? I think that happens in this game a bit from memory. There's archaeology and shit there. Given the ultra beasts and their powers, they might cause that localised desert area. Makes it mysterious to me. But it is definitely commentary on the GFC given the dilapidated buildings and what was happening with the mortgage crisis in NYC.>>58535240No, the houses are a clue to what it's meant to represent, the mortgage crisis. That's why they're in a desert caused by a "disaster" of some form. From memory the npcs blame the city and it's businesses for causing it.
>>58529161New Jersey
>>58534954>I get what they were going for: They wanted an American version of the Burned Tower. The problem is that 9/11 is too recent (South Park still hasn't invoked their AIDS role on it). It ends up reading like a tasteless reference, which is why you won't ever see GF touch Unova again. And that pussy mentality is why GF doesn't make good games anymore.>oh noes it might upset peoplesThey don't have to buy it? If they're upset, just don't buy it. >no! we must capture that .001% of the audience! it's absolutely necessary! This mentality impacts the quality of the games over time. You gotta have balls sometimes.
>>58530668then why do you always pivot to it?
>>58535179Hoenn's desert also makes sense. It's at the edge of a Volcano. It's a Volcanic desert which blends perfectly well with ashy route 113. Sinnoh has something similar. It has a desert route on route 228 caused my stark mountain's volcano
>>58530668Johto is unironically so much better than Kanto it's absurd to think people prefer Kanto. Kanto is REALLY boring in comparison.
>>58535316So trueWay more landmarks and biomes
>>58529350this image conveniently skirts around how the island that's further north than most of sinnoh has a tropical climate
>>58535409Way more landmarks. Like it's not even a competition. They simply learned from Kanto what to do with Johto. I don't know why gen 1 enthusiasts get upset about that. But that's probably why no one cares as much about Hoenn. It didn't really build that much on over-world design. Clearly GF were focusing on making the most out of the GBA more than building an interesting world. There's not a lot in Ruby/Saph you couldn't do on the GC. Gen 4 at least tried to shake things up and exploit the DS. But it took until gen 5 for them to master the DS in my opinion. Gen 4 has just dicky things I hated at the time and Gen 5 was just so much better for me. That's also kinda why I didn't like Gen 6 as much as Gen 7.
>>58535316Kanto requires Johto to be fun.
>>58535455The two together work well. But why did they cull Johto for Firered/Leafgreen? That baffled me as a kid.
>>58535316Johto is just a very comfy region. Small rural towns and very traditional city (maybe that's just Ecruteak City). Johto is countryside japan while Kanto is urban Japan. I can completely understand if people find it boring though but that's also because it's suppose to be calm, quiet and chill
>>58535316johto is a poorly structured and boring region with nothing going on aside from a few pagoda-like buildings reminiscent of rural japan. the first thing everyone knows gsc for is you can go to (a shitty barren) kanto
>>58532274Unova does have this weird artificiality to it. But I actually think that it adds to the appeal. >>58535465Time constraints probably. The Sevi Islands are a good middle ground though. They're empty but in a cool way.
listen i like the games but gen 5 had a terrible region design. it looks fucking retarded
>>58529161this is what I hate about the non Japan regions. they claim they're "based" on some country but ultimately look nothing to it. paldea looks absolutely NOTHING like Spain for example
>>58536556>they claim they're "based" on some country but ultimately look nothing to itI'm an autist so I can't stand this. It pisses me off so much
>>58536556>>58536547Yeah Unova especially in BW2 felt like they were trying to cram a bunch of American locations into NYC. Especially in BW2.
Alola is the only 3D region that felt authentic. Hisui kind of does too but I don't think that really counts.
>>58536613Being purely islands kinda makes it hard not to be autentic
>>58536556They don't have to look like the country they're based off of desu. I think they just need to design the region better. Like recent gens have this obsession with every single region having a very specific type of biome even if it doesn't fit. i.e every area has to have a cold area, hot area etc... Hoenn doesn't have a cold area besides that cave and it doesn't need to. Literally makes no sense for them to have it yet they still have ice mons available because of shoal cave
>>58534281>like thisAs in, "in a place surrounded by lush terrain and water."Those specific two words are very fucking important for context lmao
>>58529161NINE
>>58529161There's actual deserts in the middle of America and the point of Unova despite being just a portion of America, is to portray the diverse fauna. Also Orre is completely a desolate land.
>>58529161underground channelized waterways that divert all rainwater along the highway into the main city, its like las vegas
>>58529161because they needed somewhere to put the desert-themed pokemonhence why the france, hawaii, uk and spain regions all also had deserts
