Case in point: when I played USUM not too long after SM, I was indeed annoyed at the railroading. I played USUM again recently (several years after the first time), and while I was sighing a bit here and there, it didn't feel nearly as bad. I'm not saying that's any justification or solution for what they've done, but that's kind of a "workaround".
