ZA has the better battles, PLA's battles were just a formality because a game where you focus solely on catching Pokemon and dodging them with no way to fight back except bags of shit would've been stupid.
And that's what all the boss fights amounted to anyway, which WAS stupid.

like sure, ZA has 'potential' as it is, but it massively encourages passive play and running away. story battles are just button mashing but even less strategy because 99% of moves are pointless to use outside of direct damage

Side step for me. I didn't really hate Arceus' battle system personally, just felt that there could've been a few more significant battles.

I think the combat in this game had a lot of potential but it kind of fizzled out about halfway through for me, and then became rock paper scissors one shot spamming. Ranked is a bit better but it often becomes just hanging back and kill stealing, going in first isn't really rewarded.

I feel like ZA's battle system could've really done with some sort of dodge/defensive mechanic that isn't tied to a moveslot. The moves that force a reposition usually still end up with you tanking a hit. So using glass cannons is a lot harder.

I think LZA made it so much better. I love the new battle mechanics and I had so much fun getting to rank a in online royale. It should unironically be the new standard for future games.

I had a Krokorok w/ Shell Bell who got Toxic’d immediately.

For the whole 10 fights I had to switch him in and out almost immediately to avoid the toxic ticks. Having to constantly make decisions on the fly was kino.

There really is something special there if they can work out how to make different positioning and AOE attacks engaging.
