>>58589947You know, looking back at the sprites of Walrein, I think the reason why he wasn't very well-regarded is because he made a bad first impression. He started as an adorable round seal, but when he evolved into Walrein, he looked like the sprite on the left. He looked pretty angry and stupid and he had a big dumb nose. Gen 4 made some minor adjustments and he now looked less dumb and angry, but people already had it in their heads that hey didn't like him. With his adjusted design, I could easily have seen him as a starter, though maybe with a different typing.

At the very least it owns the Walrus concept pretty well, they didn't have to shit out ANOTHER Walrus design after Walrein. Some animal Pokemon get a pretty good deal all things considered, even Sharpedo has never been replaced by a cooler shark. Garchomp is a landshark dragon which isn't really remotely the same thing. Walrein is still The one and only Walrus Pokemon if not by dex certification

Kinda the difference between say how Winnie the Pooh is naturally a cute mascot while Goofy is cute but in a lovable goof way. It's not that much overlap in terms of fanbase unless you're a guy that can appreciate cutemons for having earnestly marketable-focused features as much as you can appreciate the cartoon goofery. I think more Walrein fans are just innately going to appreciate SphealAt least we aren't Dragonair/nitefags
