How do you decide nicknames for your pokemon?
Personally, I don't nickname a mon until it's "earned" one
>>
I name them after Gym Leaders of their type
>>
>>58591521
I use different nickname themes on different playtroughs.
>>
>>58591521
I don't this too
I also will not name my future children until they're atleast 5
>>
>>58591594
This was actually pretty common for a lot of cultures through history funnily enough
>>
>>58591521
I like puns that are lazy renames of the pokemon. Something like Gold Dean for Goldeen or Geraldos for Gyarados or Gayrados, of course
>>
I've been finding multi-pokemon nicknames amusing lately
I was using a banette and crobat to steal comet shards in white 2, so I named them delinquent and duo respectively
>>
>>58591521
I usually try to think of something quirky or a pun. If all else fails I’ll name them after historical figures or places.
>>
>>58591521
I make random sounds until one fits
>>
>>58591521
I either name them after a song or transformer
>>
They tend to be memes, references, or just stuff made up on the spot.
>>
i don't often nickname my mons, but every now and then i catch a mon for my team and smth feels special about it, so i give it a name, i can't really explain why i feel that way or what causes it but it's just a "i think i'll name this one". it usually ends up becoming my ace, or i at least see it as such
as for the name itself, it's usually a reference to something fitting with the mon's design, sometimes something popular, sometimes something more niche. the most recent two i've done this for are my doublade in X (joan), and my mantine in HG (mocha)
i'm surprised there aren't more nicknamed NPC mons throughout the series

Oh you know, whatever comes to mind.
>>
I always name my female Gardevoirs Lucy. For the others it's random whether i give them a nickname or not
>>
I personally never really nickname mons, I just don't like it. I'll do it for the occasional nuzlocke I guess, but I never end up bothering to remember the names even when I enjoy the mon in the locke. Heck, my first time nicknaming was back when I got my first shiny, a Whismur, in either Ruby or Emerald. I felt compelled to nickname it but couldn't think of anything I actually liked so I just named it "Shine". Boring and lame, and sadly not creative like I might be now, but I just never cared about it... I don't like giving mons nicknames. It feels lame.

Sit down, shut up and listen. A shiny Gyarados is using Hyper Voice.
>>
reminds me of https://arch.b4k.dev/vp/thread/58413268/#q58413281
>>
>>58591521
I name them like race horses and other contest animals.
>>
>>58592200
The wife doesn't know
The wife knows everything
>>
>>58592168
Same, plus in-universe almost nobody uses nicknames, so it feels weird.

DE-NNIS
>>
What are you, Japanese?
>>
>>58591959
Had a pair in a recent ultra moon run I thought was cute.
>>
>>58591521
i literally just write the first thing that comes to mind
>>
>>58591594
>my future children
You will be alone forever

Usually this, just whatever pops into my head when I catch them. I was in Peru when I started this romhack so a couple of them are in Spanish, then my gf lost her dongle on the flight home, etc
>>
I look up some scientific name related to that Pokemon's corresponding animal, if it has one, and derive a name from that. Otherwise I'll do things like take the concept of what the Pokemon is based off and look up a notable authority figure in that field of study and name it after them.

So in my HeartGold I have
>Ceruleus the Feraligatr (Cerulean + Julius)
>Liesegang the Steelix (Mega Steelix has Liesegang rings)
>Sinensis the Leafeon (Camellia sinensis is the scientific name of the tea plant)
>Epeus the Hitmonchan (Greek soldier who built the Trojan Horse)
>William the Slowking (After King William IV)
>Victoria the Togekiss (After Queen Victoria, who had Gold and Diamonhd Jubilees, Togekiss is the Jubilee Pokemon)
>Trance the Gengar (Puts Pokemon into trances (Hypnosis))
>Delta the Snorlax (He's in delta sleep)
>Verdan the Dragonite (Green)
>Coulomb the Raikou (After Charles-Augustin de Coulomb, whose name is used for electrical charge)
>Arrhenius the Entei (After Svante Arrhenius, who estimated increasing atmospheric temperature using carbon dioxide)
>Leopold the Suicune (After Luna Leopold, late US geomorphologist and hydrologist)

And so on.

i name them whatever i feel like
but usually recurring themes for nicknames i give include
>weapons
>mythical creatures
>4chan/vp injokes
>whatever the hell toadline breeders name their dogs
>references to games i've played recently
>occasionally i'll name some after friends i've made in multiplayer games
>geology-related stuff for ground/rock/steel types
>>
>>58592922

Whatever I feel like. I don't usually put much thought into it. Maybe it's just what came to mind, maybe it was a song I was listening to. My failed failed plat nuzlocke compilation for example (died at Cynthia)
My Z-A team's names were themed after plants however.

>>
>>58591521
If I can come up with something clever or mildly funny I'll nickname it that. Otherwise, no nickname.
>>
Unironically just fish out references from my head. Be it for fictional or real life stuff
>>
I nickname every single one the first random bullshit that pops into my head after I catch it
>>
>>58591521
Just kinda name them with whatever pops up in my head
>>
>>58591521
Usually anime characters.
>Personally, I don't nickname a mon until it's "earned" one
Your parents should have left you unnamed.
>>
>>58591521
I don’t nickname my mons
>dog named dog
Yes
>>
>>58594541
If a mon doesn't have enough of an identity to have a nickname, why would I force one on it?
Effectively all I do is wait until I have an idea I really really like
>>
>>58594874
For me it's the opposite, I can't start training a mon until I give it a unique identity.
>>
>>58594963
I've just noticed that the more I try to nickname mons, the more often I end up with nicknames I feel nothing about. My only real rule is I only nickname a mon if I come up with one where I'm like "oh my god I have to name it this right fucking now"
I just try not to force it
>>
>>58595060
I come with nicknames easily so it works out for me. Had a blast with more out there throwaway nicknames when I still played Go.
>>
>>58595549
It took me ten seconds to realize you meant pokemon go, I was thinking you meant Go the board game
>>
>>58595584
I'd play that too if I had the brains...
