They were way more elaborate and abstract as far as details and shape were concerned, but they had recognizable pokemon elements like the simplified eyes and mouths. Arceus deviated a bit further by having no mouth but its eyes still resemble its kin and other powerful pokemon like Groudon and Metagross. I much prefer it to ultra beasts deviating completely from the artstyle while not being particularly distinct in and of themselves. Pheramosa for example is literally just a stock model of a cockroach with a cute face lazily slapped on.
