As a kid and to a certain degree even now I make sure the nature and characteristics work together even if it results in a objectively weaker pokemon. Like I wouldn't use a Modest/Somewhat Vain pokemon even if the IVs are really good for example. The Pokedex entries help a lot as well. Then I'll just mix it all together with a whole team and logic out interactions.

I had a version of him that evolved in ORAS, but that doesn't count! Ferro just likes to chill out, he naps a lot, and it very cuddly with is sometimes awkward with how heavy he is, but put up with it for those smiling eyes
