Kids in my area are still wild about pokemon. But what I wonder about is how difficult chase cards are to pull for any given kid now.
When we were young, the chase cards showed up in 1/3 packs. Now, the chance of pulling ANY SIR is in the hundreds, and for specific ones in the thousands of packs. Pulling Charizard in base set was 1/3 x 1/15. Odds are ridiculous now. All the expensive cards are owned by adults. When these kids come of age and look back on their collection, it will be full of regular V cards and shit.

Ok, I haven't bought anything pokemon related since 2006 or so. I wanted to start collecting a few cards I think look nice and I did so by buying singles since it seemed cheaper to me.
Problem is that a few of the ones I really like like the Charizard that is flying (MEW 199) Venusaur (MEW 198) and Lugia V (SIT 186) are too expensive for me.
What are my options? buying packs? I would be down to buying a few and trying my luck and if it doesn't work out give up, but there are so many different products like boxes decks etc that I don't know which ones I should try.

It's good to know, but sadly it has some whitening. And I'm also the kind of guy that can't bring himself to be able to sell something I like. I think Yugioh is really fun to play if you are playing casually and/or playing during the DM and GX eras (yes I'm a yugiboomer). Sometimes the current meta can be fun when there are is a lot of variety in decks that do well. Outside of that, I wouldn't say it is fun though.

That's a misconception spread by literal retards. Japanese booster boxes guarantee one secret rare, of which could be a full art pokemon, trainer OR a Special Art Rare. Only exception was Terastel Festival ex because it didn't have any full art pokemon cards and no regular Art Rares so they had to make up for it by the guaranteed SR being an SAR.
