I know Emerald and/or the remakes are mostly superior for the average person but I’m curious as to what people think of the original Hoenn games on their own merits.

Better Protag designs (especially May)Better pacing (Magma Hideout is dogshit)Better Champion (no cope will ever make Wallace a good Champion)Honestly Emerald doesn't even improve much from RS, it just adds content and makes a few unnecessary changes. The main problem is RS are so barebones that the added content in Emerald really makes Gen III actually feel complete instead of half-assed follow ups due to the games being rushed out in 2 years (being developed simultaneously as fucking Crystal). Platinum is such a monumental improvement from DP that there's no reason to go back to those games, but going back to RS is easier than Emerald because Emerald's greatest value is its post game. If they didn't Dexit nearly 200 mons from RS, we wouldn't have needed KAAANTO remakes
