Why is it not acceptable to call Pokémon by their Japanese names?
>>

Lizardon is an ugly shitmon
Getting favoritism doesn't make it less of an ugly shitmon as well

You can do it, but don’t be surprised when you talk about how you’re tired of seeing Isitsubute in every game and no one knows what you’re talking about. Only reason people here know and accept human Japanese names is because of waifufags and anime watchers.

I just want to know why they haven't localized more names. Spanish for example. Why do they get stuck with english names?
>>
>>58754426
Too expensive, please understand.
>>
>>58754426
Marketing reasons.
Digimon in Latin America, for example, was a translation from the original Japanese without censorship. However, Bandai of USA told the dub people to please keep the same Digimon and character names as the ones used in English, so that products can be exported with little issue and merchandise is not a hassle.

Because Pokemon doesn't have the issue of being schizo with names like Digimon. They localize the name and stick with it. As such, the only excuse for using their Japanese name on an English forum is being a weeb. YWNBAJ

what Japanese names would have fit in English? For instance, Goriander is Rillaboom in Japanese and its portmanteau of Gorilla and Coriander. Theres also Calamanero (Malamar) which is calamari plus nero (squid and black in italian)
>>
>>58754071
Miscommunication.
It's better to call them by their localized names when you're in the appropriate location.
>>
>>58755031
There are already plenty of Pokemon that share the same name in both Japanese and English. Caterpie, Butterfree, Pikachu, Gyarados, Gengar, Unown,Togepi, Zangoose, Lucario, Rotom, Musharna, Zoroark, Floette, Mimikyu, most legendaries and mythicals just to name a few off the top of my head.

Recently I've begun thinking that human characters in Pokemon having their names changed to "western" ones in translation feels like a pretty outdated/questionable localization practice these days, but I don't have a problem with the actual Pokemon's names being changed. Like other anons have said, they're species names so it's no different than animals being called different things in different languages, and the species names differing in other languages is something that's even canon in the game text I think, so whatever.

I think the reason it feels more annoying to go out of your way to call every mon by its Japanese name on an English site is that the Japanese names of the human characters are probably a bit better known, but with 1000+ Pokemon sometimes it's legitimately not clear what the fuck is being referred to if you just throw out a bunch of random Japanese mon names with no context. And I say this even as someone who's interested in the original Japanese game text and comparing it to the translations.
>>
>>58756193
not to mention that something like 95% of the localized pokemon names are actually GOOD unlike anything else in pokemon.
>>
>>58754084
As an EU localisation fag, I think a lot of English pokemon names sound like shit as well.
Relaxo > Snorlax
So I can understand why OP might prefer using the original names instead of the localised burger names.
Also Arseus > Arkeus
>>
>>58754149
Agreed, some of the German names are cooler than the English ones.
Some of the French ones as well.
Certain English names are just utter garbage, such as Blastoise (based on tortoise, pronounced tor-tiss, so Blas-tiss?)..

I think a big reason Pokemon refuses to adopt industry standards, and the reason we don't have official subs for the Japanese anime are the localized names. "Charizard" started out as just being this great localized name for the species, but its become a brand into itself. The machine is too powerful to course correct. Introducing two different names for these million-dollar characters would just create confusion. Having two names in one market makes it harder to search on Amazon, harder for SEO. Even for the adult fans, it can create an emotional split. I had that experience when I imported BW, I loved "Kibago" and "Mijumaru", but it took me a while to warm to their localized names. "Axew" merch just didn't hit the same at first.

Pokemon is hyper focused on brand image and maintaining that image. It doesn't take place on Earth, Kanto isn't Japan, it's just "this world" or "the world of Pokemon". A lot of anime, especially during this third/fourth wave of international otaku, lean in to their Japanese roots, even if the stories don't take place in Japan. Characters having Japanese names used to be a problem to be solved, but now it's part of their branding. Pokemon is a different beast. It's inherently globalized, and draws on lots of different real world cultures, but never explicitly so. Having the human cast keep their Japanese names could be confusing, and it would rob international audiences of names that communicate who they are, much like "Hitokage" would. If the series returns to Japan, then it might give them an opportunity to experiment with a more Japanese-flavoured international branding, but it would still be different between markets. What plays well to American weebs might not play so well to Chinese fans. GF is attune to avoiding cultural sensitivities, and they already saw some blowback from Chinese fans over the Ruins. Korea could pose a similar issue, a lot of Japanese brands imported to Korea cut overtly Japanese content or themes

>If the series returns to Japan, then it might give them an opportunity to experiment with a more Japanese-flavoured international branding, but it would still be different between markets.
Hisui and Kitakami?
>>
>>58756319
Both were supplementary, not the main pillars for the brand. They introduced a small number of Pokemon, nearly all of which were part of existing families. The cast of characters from Hisui were never meant to headline the anime, and most of them could be marketed the same way regional forms are marketed. Kieran and Carmine were exchange students, and the second half their story takes place in Unova.

There's a difference between side content that indulges in Japanese culture and aesthetics, versus having that be the brand for 2-3 years. Having it shape the anime, the card game, the thematic inspiration for your starters, legends, and merchandise-drivers. Although you're correct in a sense, I do think those games show a desire from GF to return to a Japanese setting. It's just taking a backseat to all these other plans and projects. If Gen 10 is meant to be aspirational ("the sky is the limit"/"sail to the edge of the earth"), perhaps we'll see Gen 11 build on those advances and apply them to the series' roots and foundation. Kind of like how ZA zooms in on a single city rather than trying to one-up SV with a bigger open world.

Pokemon is one of the few IP thats world canonically has multiple real world languages in it. Basically every other IP has only the "main" language, has multiple languages but "translates for the audience", or the extra languages are fictional.

I'm okay with calling the monster by their JP names, Chinese and Vietnamese names on the other hand...

The new Inazuma Eleven game allows you to pick between the old hyperlocalized-for-little-timmy burger names and the original Japanese names all the older animefags are familiar with.

Pokemon should really consider the same.
