When they first added Mega Evolution, they used coolmons like Mewtwo, Lucario, Absol or Charizard X to advertise the game. Some people complain about edgy designs or classic favorites getting speshul treatment, but it was a great success.ZA has 3 unpopular starters to begin with, and more "funny" design choices like Gatr's Totodile face or Raichu turning back into Pikachu.

Mega Pyroar, Excadrill, and Starmie are just baffling design decisions. And DLC kind of redeemed the return of megas but nog by much. WHO asked for Mega Tatsugiri? There’s a bunch of other Pokemon who deserved megas way more, and the Pokemon who got Megas deserved much better presentation and designs. Especially since this will more than likely be the last game in a while that will feature Mega Evolutions.

If they kept the same philosophy from the initial batch of mega designs fromXY and ORAS the “hey let’s take this design and make it more cooler or make it more of itself and reinforce the designs concept and make it stronger ” I think the Z-A batch of megas would’ve been received better. Also a lot of the appeal of mega evolution is the aesthetics and look of mons. It doesn’t help if the designs actively make the design less appealing. Both Mega Raichus are a prime example of how NOT to design a mega evolution.
