pokemon red or blue originals for game boy. some kid is gonna come in here and say you should play the remakes which are a lot worse and list a bunch of reasons or something probably. but you should not play the remakes because they are garbage and you should just download a pokemon red rom for game boy (NOT advance).

play ZA if you want to play some mediocre shovelware later after playing gen 1-5 in order

what you should play in order:
>pokemon red or blue (originals, not the remakes)
>pokemon silver or gold
>pokemon emerald
>pokemon diamond or pearl
>pokemon white or black

then you can play the garbage shovelware that came after, or as a bonus, play pokemon yellow and pokemon stadium 1 and 2 to play more great pokemon games before you play the dogshit shovelware. I highly recommend playing these.

other games that are good in the franchise are:
>pokemon tcg for game boy
>pokemon pinball (there's one for game boy and game boy advance, play the game boy one first)
>pokemon snap
>pokemon mystery dungeon
>pokemon colosseum
>pokemon XD
>pokemon puzzle challenge and pokemon puzzle league
>pokemon ranger
>pokemon heart gold and soul silver (good if you want more pokemon gold and silver)

**DOGSHIT SHOVELWARE**
here's a list of the dogshit shovelware (garbage) games that you should not waste your time playing unless you played the good games already and just want to see how shit they are:
>pokemon xy (one of the worst games ever made)
>pokemon sun and moon (one of the worst games ever made)
>pokemon sword and shield (one of the worst games ever made)
>pokemon SV (one of the worst games ever made)
**DOGSHIT SHOVELWARE**

bad games, but not some of the worst games ever made, you can play them if you really want to after playing the great/good ones:
>pokemon legends arceus and pokemon legends ZA

hey you pikachu is alright because of the ending but hard to emulate and was already hard to play to begin with. pokemon channel is for babies and sucks. don't really recommend either of these but they're kind of interesting

do not play the shovelware games that I listed, they are complete effortless garbage made in a year each and are shit that suck cock. it will make you think the franchise is complete shit for 3-year-olds. Do not play them. No matter what any kid says. Trust me.

>pokemon diamond or pearl
actually, play pokemon platinum instead of diamond or pearl, there's actually no reason to play those because they're shit compared to platinum.
I forgot they were complete shit and platinum made them completely pointless.
the reason why they're so shit is because by gen 3 (pokemon ruby, sapphire, emerald) they started making way shittier games because other people were in charge.
and they fucked it up. so do not play diamond or pearl once you get to gen 4. play platinum once you get to that point.

I reached the post limit and I'm not writing an essay. anyway I'm right. listen to me or don't. also I completely forgot pokemon black 2 and white 2 which I never played.

Yeah pretty much this except gen 1 and 3 are awesome and gen 2 sucks farts out of an asshole and platinum is good. Gen 3 actually claims many good gen 2 Pokémon since they don’t appear until post game, and nobody who wasn’t an npc played gen 2, so mons like scarmory are technically considered gen 3 mons by fans.

Mons are mons are mons are mons are mons

Play OG Red and Blue. Emulating them is a piece of cake.
If you want something more similar to the anime, play Yellow.
When you play gen 2, pick Gold or Silver. Crystal is also a choice. Just remember that time is going to be an important factor in this game.
When you play Gen 3, you can choose Ruby or Sapphire to get into the mechanics. Then play Emerald since is the most "complete" version. I started with Sapphire.
When you play Gen 4, just play Platinum. I know people will say "but Diamond and Pearl!". No, play Platinum.

Anything after that is up to you.

>what would be the best game to play first?
Any of these listed below, choose based on preferred handheld:
>and then what games in sequence after that?
The others (the ones with arrows are sequels):
>FireRed & LeafGreen (GBA) -> HeartGold & SoulSilver (NDS)
FR/LG are remakes of the original Red & Blue, and HG/SS are Crystal remakes
>Emerald (GBA)
Enhanced version of Ruby & Sapphire
>Platinum (NDS)
Enhanced version of Diamond & Pearl
>Black & White (NDS) -> Black 2 & White 2 (NDS)
Note: Only Pokémon that were brand new at the time, #495~#646, can be found in BW 1 before you beat the main story

Or maybe these:
>Red & Blue (GB) -> Crystal (GBC)
>Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl (NSW)
Diamond & Pearl remakes if you prefer something modern, although they lack the additions from Platinum and don't look really pretty for a Switch game
>Scarlet & Violet (NSW)
Decent games, especially when running on a Switch 2, but they're a different experience from the classic games listed above

I personally consider the Pokémon Legends good, but their gameplay are really different from the mainline games (and from each other, for that matter)
If you can pirate, I'd recommend hackroms that make all Pokémon catchable without changing the games too much, but I'm not familiar with them to recommend one.

Ask somewhere else and get out while you still can, this board hates Pokemon.

FRLG is more outdated now than RBY was when FRLG came out. there’s no reason to play it.

ignore all the other bullshit in this thread. here’s the real complete comprehensive guide:

start with playing Red or Blue. doesn’t matter which. don’t play yellow, it changes things to be more like the anime.

if you’re satisfied, you can stop there. but if you want more, then play Crystal next. it’s a direct sequel to RB. you can even transfer your gen 1 team up and keep using them, but I wouldn’t do this until after the credits roll.

skip gen 3, for reasons I’ll explain later. for gen 4, play Platinum.

gen 5 has two pairs of games. play Black or White, then stick with the same version for Black 2 or White 2. and use Memory Link for the full experience. and personally, I like to wait a month or two between the games.

gen 3 was skipped earlier because it’s very similar to gen 4, but with less refinement. so you don’t miss much by skipping it. there’s Emerald’s battle frontier, but I’m assuming you’re a casual player who won’t be doing that anyway. and you’ll still get the chance to go to Hoenn, because the gen 3 remakes are the best way to experience gen 6.

don’t play any of the later games, they’re all terrible.

with all that said, here’s the order you should play the games in:
RB>Crystal>Platinum>BW>ORAS>BW2

and if you can play through all of that without getting burnt out, call your shrink and see about getting an autism diagnosis.
