Don't know why this movie doesn't get more love. It's one of the best both in terms of plot/action and animation and characters design/aesthetics.AG movies in general are really good, they are underrated imo.

It was made during the "Pokemon is a dirty word" era of the franchise where Gaijin stopped caring about Pokemon because it was no longer popular. It predates when the actual anime became irredeemable trash but came after most of the early movie masterpieces before they became solely corporate shilling. In hindsight the AG and DP movies are good for what they are, but that's for what they are. Earlier Pokemon just had such a radically different energy to it and this was the transitional period where it fully became a fantasy world with its own ruleset and it'll have to sit in the "at least I'm not 2010s PokeAni" chair for the rest of time, never to be reevaluated as masterpieces or be anything more than a DVD sale for TPCLately it feels like Hoenn and Sinnoh are like an expanded issue that Johto has being "Kanto's backyard" where they're treated as "core part of PokeJapan but not a unique identity like Unova, Kalos, Galar, etc."

Gen 3 is when they stopped airing in American theaters and went straight to Cartoon Network. But the art is very good.

>>58777463Just to think of it, this also made me remember how I found the second half of RS chapter in Pokespe underwhelming exactly because it became a Kaiju battle, dropping all the interesting aspects of the first half, and not to mention the rushed epilogue that could have been developed better if they didn't focus entirely on Kaijus.In fact, I'd say that I prefer when Pokémon is about adventure and friendship rather than big monsters fighting each other to no end.Godzilla is a big part of pokemon DNA, true, but so is Stand by Me after all.
