Every single character from XY is only there to make you think they have worth to the story, but almost all of them save for Lysandre provide nothing. Emma? Does nothing, she shows up and shows you Mega Evolution and then randomly shows up sometimes to do nothing. AZ? Stands around inside the hotel all day saying that he feels the tower's pain. Barely even interacts with his own Floette that he sacrificed everything for, repented and was finally forgiven by. Then he just dies off screen. Mable? Literally does nothing the whole game but send you to the Lab. It's incredibly sad how the characters in this game were handled. But what can you expect from Gamefreak?

With ZA I don't think they were prepared for revisiting the setting despite whatever lofty ideas they might have had initially. 90% of development time was probably spent trying to get the real time combat to work while wrangling their shitty old engine. Personally I would have preferred if the only recurring character was Lysandre and have everybody else be a new character.

He's the one who gives you the Mega Ring+Starter Mega stone and him literally owning Hotel Z means the entire base of operations is a factor at all because of him. Also the literal only time in the game Floette is a factor and not him is the intro where the rival uses it, literally every time he speaks otherwise Floette is also there to react/chime in.
