What was Pokemania like? Was it really as great as boomers make it out to be?
no
>>58802044imagine pokemon go's boom, but bigger and everywhere
No, just nostalgia
>OMG POKEMON EGGO WAFFLES POKEMON SHITTY CHOCOLATE POKEMON TYLENOLlol
>>58802044Just take a fad, literally any fad you remember like I dunno, Italian Brainrot and replace it with Pokémon, that's what it was, kids being crazy for something and old people not getting it and seething, nothing more
It sucks being born in 97 because I was always a step behind everything that was cool and everything we got was gay
>>58802044It taught Game Freak that you can make a game that's an actual decade behind everything else on the market and still make bank, a strategy they've continued ever since.
>>58802044It wasn’t just Pokemania on its own that was great. It was the overall Y2K era (1999-2000) that felt more joyful and exciting than today.
It was comfy. My younger brother, 3 kids on our block and myself would battle with our game boys and battle with cards. We did round robby battle royal for days and nights. Pokemon first movie i saw in theaters. It was fun.
>>58802080Zoomers got Minecraft which was arguably just as big in its heyday as Pokemon was. At least you’re not Gen Alpha.
>>58802044It made TMNT and Batman look like a fucking joke, that's how big it was.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Dl7YF5Mr8Q
>>58802088Minecraft wasn't as big or nearly as loved. You could literally just start random pokemon conversations with strangers, everyone was into pokemon
>>58802117You literally could and still can with Minecraft unc
>>58802130>can't comprehend the absolute dominance of Pokemonminecraft isn't even in the top 25 franchises bro, it'll never compete with pokemania
>>58802148Who cares? Nobody laughs at a middle aged man who still plays Minecraft.
>>58802162>Nobody laughs at a middle aged man who still plays Minecraft.but ... they do
>>58802175Nowhere near as much as they do at middle-aged pokemon fans. Minecraft is an all-ages game I can play with my kids. Pokemon is a kid's game that's played by adults who act like kids. See the difference?
>>58802184Minecraft is Roblox-tier
>>58802191Kindly go fuck yourself sir. You know I'm right.
>>58802044Yes, no cultural event like it has happened sincehttps://youtu.be/bIgoB2HD0t4?si=sHXvDVVW6R1VpzhB
>>58802215The part that never gets mentioned is that Pokemania only lasted until the release of Gold and Silver because most people didn't want to have to learn a whole new set of Pokemon. Sure, there were still fans, but the actual hype the brand generated had died way down by that point.
>>58802243>never gets mentionedwym? zoomers keep repeating how GS was so bad it killed pokemania, despite it being objectively better.
>>58802044nothing in the modern era compares to peak pokemania. not even avengers or whatever garbage zoomers and gen alpha went through. back then you could meet a kid with a Gameboy and nod, knowing you had something in common. it was literally everywhere, from food to clothing to absolutely useless shit you bought anyway. there'd be crowds of kids on the playground when two kids had link battles. you honestly could go and make friends with kids anywhere just because Pokemon was such a gateway to meet people. which is why it saddens me to see the franchise get away with so much garbage when it used to be something so special
Reminder that South Park (the old seasons, you know the ones the internet likes because they where libertarian and “didn’t compromise” and “had values”) completely shat on Pokémon and called it a “temporary fad” Now it’s the highest grossing franchise ever and South Park is making fun of libertarianism.
>>58802252It wasn't the game that did it though, despite what Youtube grifters want you to believe. Fans legitimately thought 250 pokemon was too many.
>>58802117You can still do this, and you'll still get le period-accurate KANTOOOOOOOOO bootlicking.
>>58802117>Minecraft wasn't as big or nearly as lovedthat's false, it was huge for early 2000s zoomers like my old friend's baby brother ~2010
>>58802252I and Joe say that and neither of us are zoomers
>>58802326>ecleb worshipsad
>>58802044It was interesting to experience as a kid, being able to find Pokemon stuff everywhere (official or bootleg, also stuff directly from Japan) and knowing pretty much everyone, even older kids, knew what it was. As someone who was allowed to go on the internet unsupervised then probably too young, there were a ton of Pokemon sites and it was fun to browse for cheats/rumors/info about the series in Japan/people's fanart/etc. Obviously all that is still around today but it felt a little more personal/unique since it was all scattered across people's individual sites. But looking back it wasn't really THAT special honestly. Like all the games and stuff are still around and can be experienced today so it's not like something material is really gone forever (unless you're desperate to try shitty Pokemon cereal or whatever); it was just like an atmosphere of hype that made it fun to be a kid into the series at the time and feels nostalgic to look back on.
>>58802326>one of the most beloved post-games in the series was “highly lacking” according to that brit retardE-celebs but especially Pokemon E-celebs should have their internet access revoked.
>>58802587>owner of the 2nd biggest and longest running Pokemon fan website who was around for Pokemania and whose mascot is a Johto mon is an unqualified randoJohtoddlers will never ever escape the butthurt retard allegations
>>58802623nigga you're trying too hard
>>58802623the final boss is Lance.Red is a super boss.
>>58802623Context for this was he was trying to nuzlocke hg with a bug only team lol
>>58802044Remember the first three weeks of Pokemon Go?It was that, but for about a year. People will say two years but people fell off during Orange island, few actually made it to G/S, the fad was over-exposed resented, mocked, seen as infantile and died.
Pokemania was more about the general culture it was a part of rather than the IP itself. Right time, right place. Peak dotcom bubble and a generally prosperous time. Get into the actual numbers and Pokemon is more popular now than it was even back then, but it might not feel that way.
