Nishida designed a lot of the cuter and feminine ones because Hello Kitty was huge among girls and women. The Gen 2 designs as a whole were cuter because mons like Pikachu, Meowth, Jigglypuff, Eevee, and Clefairy ended up driving the most merch sales.
