Way better than Hoenn's ass overworld sprites making even the comfy areas like secret bases worse. It's a shame the remakes came out in Gen 6 so they couldn't even fix basically the only objective problem with Hoenn, the overworld artstyle.

When it comes to in-battle graphics GSC easily has the best spritework of any mainline game. The overworld however leaves a lot to be desired. That’s not to say it’s bad but it certainly isn’t pleasing to look at. And vice versa for RSE, the in-battle graphics look downright terrible at times (like using literal circles for moves like Mud Shot and Hydro Pump) but the overworld graphics are incredible. Emerald Meteor Falls is leagues ahead of any location from the first 4 generations in terms of graphics.Both GSC and RSE have incredible art direction, just in different areas. DPPt on the other hand aren’t noteworthy in any regard. And for as much shit as this board gives Gen 5 I believe that it does a lot right, like the incredible move animations & accompanying SFX as well as animated sprites. The static in-battle spritework pales in comparison to GSC and the environments aren’t as varied and charming as RSE but its lows aren’t nearly as low as the aforementioned titles. But that’s just my opinion.

I think we can agree base DP has no aesthetic, like at all, but I think Platinum at least makes an attempt even if it's no HGSS. And yeah, Gen 5 is pretty consistently above board on basically everything but almost never excels in any area which can leave some people wanting (at least it's not XY where nearly everything is just below standard making it genuinely dip into mediocre).

Meteor Falls and Route 113 have already been mentioned in this thread but just compare Route 3 from FRLG to Route 102 from RSE; they’re both simple early game routes but Route 102 is more visually pleasing. Also helps that the move animations and SFX are very dynamic and punchy
