The better hardware was covered by that statement anon. It doesn't change my point, the more out-there NPC's, named or otherwise, are as a result of them being a generation removed from the OG dev staff working on the project (they're all supervisors or left Game Freak to do other shit elsewhere) and not being constrained as much by the factors that resulted in past Gens' development when it comes to character design (as we KNOW they have a hard enshrined rulesheet for designing pokémon in general and starter pokémon in particular). And the newbie hires have been influenced by and worked on Pokémon from 2007, when Game Freak hired a remake team to allow the main team to make Gen 5 and most of that team were all hired having played GS back on Game Boy release. The inmates are taking over the asylum and as a result the tenets of yesteryear are being subtly redefined. because those making it did not get influenced by games as a medium, but as the tip of the spear (just look at all the anime designed characters in the anime, outside the "normal"game NPC's). Small wonder people who grew up watching an anime of a video game as part of their childhood of Pokémon, who then got jobs working creating more Pokémon draw from their influences. Not as if Sugimori ripped off Toriyama like.
